That's the thing, noone currently knows exactly what the Enhanced Edition will bring. And they're late a week on publishing the screenshots they've promised, with the iPad version looking pretty much like the vanilla game so far. As things currently stand, installing the old games + Tutu + various mods already is a fixed, stable and "modern" experience of the game.

Please be careful with such statements. "Much more time" sounds very threatening when, in fact, it's really just a couple of minutes after downloading the mods that you can run the game perfectly fine. Yeah, it may not neccessarily be 5 minutes depening on what exactly you're installing, but it doesn't take 5 hours either.

Folks interested in (re)playing Baldur's Gate today should definitely check out GoG and the already available community tools. Chances are they're doing exactly what we're going to see in the Enhanced Edition.

Actually, it isn't, and that is my point. Assuming you're using the GoG.com version:

1) Download and install the game - two clicks, 5-15 minutes
2) Visit the GoG.com BG forums, look for links to essential mods (widescreen, fixpack), download them - half a dozen clicks, 5 minutes
3) Install the mods with only the most basic options - two clicks, < 5 minutes

Granted, it's more effort than just double-clicking an installer file and playing away immediately afterwards, but you're not required to have majored in computer sciences to manage this. Community mods have this aura of being inaccessible and hard to use and set up, but unless you're trying to use the most obscure ones, it's very easy and quick to set them up.

I can confirm this. If you're not opting for the really big installation (including tactics- or expert-mods) it's not that difficult at all. And even if you want to install a ton of mods, the process is quite understandable once you read around a bit. Took me some days to get my big world installed but that was mainly because of some stupid errors on my side (eg reinstalling on an existing installation was the first and most painfull one

Since the modding-community was and is pretty active I'm a bit underwhelmed by the announcement of the enhanced edition, I highly doubt the content will be as vast as the Big World Project. Will buy it though, just for getting them to make Baldur's Gate 3!

I tried it with Planescape: Torment. Spells never worked properly on my system. They would cause a ton of lag. Many other animations did not work properly, either.

It's not the inaccessibility of community mods that I'm wary off. It's the changes they make. Many "fixes" are essentially rebalancing the game. I've played games like the Civ series, Total War series, etc. and almost never install any mods at all.

Wat? That's a ridiculous argument. As if all mods altered the game. The most popular mods - widescreen, fixpack, unfinished business - are nothing but adaptions to modern machines, bug fixes and restoration of original content. They add a lot, but certainly don't modifiy gameplay mechanics, difficulty settings or anything else. There are mods that do this, sure, but that's not what we're talking about here.

It's beginning to become quite frustrating, really. Every single time I'm trying to recommend basic mods to people eager to play BG1/2 (again), someone comes up with some argument that's completely besides the point. It's as if the word "mod" triggers some defensive reflexes in people.

I've played through Planescape recently with mods. I installed a Widescreen mod, and one that added a bunch of fixes and restored some broken/unfinished quest lines.

The widescreen mod did cause some issues with spells, mostly because there are several full-screen spell effects in Planescape. These spells would cause some pretty tremendous (maybe ~1s more or less depending on the spell and what was on screen at the time) lag and then would render in the middle of the screen in what I will guess is an 800x600 area. The reason I'm guessing is that the widescreen mod can only increase the size of the game area, and not pre-rendered spells and movies. It was not really that much of a problem though as long as you were pausing liberally. It did make playing as a mage a bit a pain though. And to be clear it was not all spells that caused this problem. Just ones with pre-rendered effects, I don't have a full list, but there were quite a few.
The Innocent shall suffer... big time.

This is starting to feel more like a milking of a beloved franchise than a true enhancement attempt.

Yeah, I was super hyped for this the first week it was announced. Each subsequent week my expectations for what this will end up being shrink. It doesn't seem like they are going to be doing all that much that existing mods don't already do, while at the same time not capturing everything mods already can do. The one thing I would still like to see is what their plans are for "functional multiplayer."

Making BG1 + BG2 into one game takes a bit more than that if memory serves me right and that is what this release promises to do if I have understood it correctly.

No, that is not what these releases promise to do. There will be seperate versions of both BG1 Enhanced and BG2 Enhanced.

I was genuinely interested in this until I saw 'enhanced edition', and for 'ipad'. Personally I wanted a modern BG in some senses, or bg3. Not this crap.

I wish people would be more positive In my mind this is them testing the waters to see if old style rpgs could truly be viable in todays day and age, if this flops I fear we are stuck with dragon age 2 style crap for the rest of eternity.
Plus I don't care what people say, getting bg1 tutu to work multiplayer with one person on vista and another on win7 with a fairly small assortment of mods was a huge fucking pain in the backside. If this enhanced edition does that out of the box I am buying no matter what, supporting the contiinued making of old style games being a bonus.

Yeah, that's a big reason why I mentioned I still wanted to see what their plans for "functional multiplayer" is. Even if its just basically a repackage of the game with fixed multiplayer at the right price, I'd still buy it. My initial expectations were probably way sky high when I heard about this, which is as much my fault as anyone's.

Just redownloaded BG2 off GoG. Already played through twice and starting a third :D what a great game. i cant believe the amount of money being poured down ratholes like DA2 when they could just remake this.

incidentally, there is a Dragon Age Origins mod that is trying to bring BG2 onto the DA engine and it looks pretty good so far.
