Hey tl, this is my first thread so I hope it's in the right place and has enough content.
Anyways, about 2 months ago my roommate noticed that I clean my ears with q-tips everyday and told me he knew someone back in his hometown that had to have surgery because he pushed so much wax into his ear. So this freaked me out a bit and I stopped using q-tips since then.
However, ever since then my ears feel dirty and some of the stuff that comes out of my ears now is disgusting! I assume this is because my body is making excess wax because of my old habits. So anyways my question is, should I go back to q-tiping or should I tough it out and let nature work its course? I would really like to clean my ears more and I don't think I was pushing wax back to begin with but I don't really know.
Thanks for any advice and move / delete this if in wrong place or not enough content.

Er, well someone once told me you can get a liquid you put in your ears to clean them out. Then you just shower and it all comes out.
And every day is way too much... |

| hydrogen peroxide in your ear and wait about 1 min. then go in the shower. You don't really need to clean your ears that much but my ears have A LOT of wax so i could clean them everyday. I just let the shower hit me in the ear. Some people just make more wax than others. Last edit: 2012-02-29 11:09:49 |

| I had a bad wax buildup before to the point where there was mild pain in my ear. The doctor just took this little squirter thing and blasted the deep inside my air and it all came out instantly. I def used less qtips after that. |

Should limit q-tips to once or twice a week instead of stopping it altogether. As others have said, everyone has different rates of growing wax so go from that.
Also, it's more likely the friend pushed the q-tip in too far tearing the ear drum then wax being the culprit. My little sister has this problem and is permanent all thanks to my retarded mother. |

| You don't need to do it every day... just do it like once a week. I literally never use q-tips, I don't have very waxy ears. |

Don't clean your ear with anything smaller than your own finger if you want to avoid pushing wax in your ear, only use q-tips to clean the outer part of your ear. I don't know if this is true for everyone but when I use earphones I produce more wax so if you use them frequently, try to use them less/use headphones. You shouldn't be cleaning your ear canal so often anyways, the wax is to protect the ear from bacteria and shit |

Best way to remove wax from your ears is to take a small syringe, fill it with lukewarm water and then gently rinse the ears out.
Also, don't do it like everyday. Once per month usually is more than sufficient.Last edit: 2012-02-29 21:22:12 |

| I've heard from various sources that Q-tips are really bad for you ear ( 'ear' doctors on TV shows, I know TV is pretty sensationalist but still) so I don't use them at all. I just use my finger and go along the outer rim. |

using q-tips will press wax back into your ear and eventually cause an infection or worse
if you're going to use peroxide, you're usually safer with a peroxide+water mix, as you DO need wax in your ears, and just pouring pure peroxide in there will leave you with little wax and a ton of residue
your best bet is to go to a doctor, get a professional cleaning, then ask them their advice on the subject |

| Thanks guys. I'll continue to try and avoid q-tips. I just really hate the feeling after a warm shower... that was when I always cleaned them and they just feel nasty hah. Anyways I'll just use my fingers. |

you can use q-tip for your outer ear, just don't push that shit in your ear lobe |

I use Q-tips and never had any problems. It's when I DID NOT use Q-tips I had problems. I was super sick once because I had some kind of an ear infection. It was because I didn't clean my ears. lol... I had to get water IV shots and everything so that I could recover from my horrible condition.
After that epidemic I started using q-tips like once a day. Just don't be reckless with a Q-tip if you are going to use them frequently. Last edit: 2012-03-01 13:31:12 |

| I went in to my doctors once to get my wax shot out with a syringe full of water. It was a very unpleasant experience but now I don't use Q tips anymore like my doctor told me and things are going well. I just use my finger when I get some wax buildup but it's really bad to use anything that can further push wax into your ear. |

I never clean my ears O_O
It doesn't seem necessary at all; if I get into the habit of cleaning my ears it'll just introduce another chore into my life, no thanks:D |

| I'm someone who produces a TON of wax. I've before had a buildup so bad that there was very significant pain in my ear and my hearing was severely impaired. Only solution I've found is to use some wax-softening solution drops and then spray water up my ear using a syringe. |

| Yeah don't clean them everyday. 2-3 times a week is fine. Also when showering, clean your ears out properly with soap and water. Don't worry about wax buildup because of old habits, your body will adapt to your new habits soon enough. Ensure that your ears are cleaned gently with the q-tips. Dont be too rough and dont go deep into your ear. You can injure your eardrum if you do that. |

| My mom would clean out my ears when I was younger. We had like this thing that's effectively a small hoe that she would to scrape out the wax. It looks something like this: http://myownprivatejapan.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/img_4557-copy.jpg There's the chance that you could tear the ear drum but now that I'm older, I do it myself so I have full control and only myself to blame if I go deaf in an ear. It's a pretty effective method. |

| I've had problems with wax twice before where it would be so bad I couldn't hear out of my ears. If you go to the doctor's, they will use a syringe and forcefully spray water into them and also use a plastic pick like thing to clear them. It's so awesome to finally hear clearly again after having them plugged up for a while! :D But now I have a problem where my inner ears CONSTANTLY itch, and I use qtips to scratch them. A lot of the time it itches so bad my ears start bleeding, and i get blood on the qtips. I'm wondering if there's a way to solve this because it's very annoying and I've gotten multiple infections as well as the ear blockages. Sorry for hijacking this thread but I need some answers. |

I've had to go to the hospital for severe earpain which was a result of wax buildup before.
The doctors said that I can just cup water with my hands in the shower and splash it into my ear gently every day and that it shouldn't be an issue. I've followed his advice and my ears have been clean for the past eight years.
Never use Q-tips. They're awful for your ears and will just push the wax further inside. |
