I think too much of the vast public are and will concentrate on the man Joseph Kony. This however is counter-productive as this is not the only country that this is a problem in. Africa is covered in countries that are controlled unofficially by rebels where this happens the exact same as was in Uganda.
More attention needs to be brought towards the issue of capturing children and forcing them to fight for the rebels rather then to catch on man that is a major part in it. I am sure that in his group he is not the only one that believes in his cause so what do people think will happen once he is captured. Just like the world works, someone that believes in the exact same things he did/does will take his place and will continue these incomprehensible actions.

I am glad people are joining this movement for the google searches going into Africa and Uganda. Simple starts such as, "Why didn't this guy get taken down by a Ugandan army?" and "Why haven't I heard about this sooner --- what else haven't I heard?" can lead to more learning in a week than today's New Math will teach people. A little more global awareness (and awareness is a buzzword if I've ever seen it. Breast cancer and HIV/AIDS awareness in Lord's Resistance Army awareness of Invisible Children sex trafficking awareness of the poverty-stricken hunger awareness) never hurt anyone.
Now, the glitz and glamour of this is about a good cause. The secondary story is unless a big free-time wealthy individual gets a movie crew and starts to film this and releases a heart-wrenching video, nobody cares. It's just a byline
- Syrian protestors quelled - Gotta look to find a movie. Nobody famous enough is on tape
- Apostate Muslim or Facebooking-without-a-burka-Muslim is tried and executed in Muslim Country
- Poverty, Injustice, Cruelty on parade in 10x the proportions over in neighboring [x]
I am really glad that the movie was overdone to the point of comedy. It's almost like Children of Men or Expendables (?) got redone into a nonfiction work. Like all the good-looking protestors stopped decrying the oppression of the 1% and picked up new tshirts and signs for the 0.09% of Uganda. Tug at the heartstrings, okay passionate moment extendddddddddddd it, okay audience is roped in and taking a gasp, alright 'Take Action' transition sans Donate Now! button, okay close, It's a wrap.
What lurks in the background is a corrupt government and a country no stranger to strife. http://pomee.tumblr.com/post/18899601760/kony-2012-causing-more-harm-than-good I'm not going to comment on the veracity of this source, thank you MercilessMonkey, but it does point at the fact that it ignores the current regime in power like a shrugging man at some puppet state, "Well of course they can't do anything about a cruel man with a legion of child soldiers." A mere propaganda piece motivates with the motions, better pieces will give some idea of what has been done, and some basic information about the landscape of the conflict (link alleges that conflict has moved on, geographically). The movie does a disservice to its subject. |

I didnt flame the video, did you even read my post...

To bash a culture based around social media, well I'm not so sure that needs to be addressed in this thread.
What got my into cynical mode, is that people only find this stuff out when people serve it on a fuckin plate, jamming it into their head. Hence the bashing of media driven societies. But i admit, it is a little of topic.
On March 08 2012 16:06 DeadEyE X wrote: I also think playing "cop" in a country such as afghanistan or iraq is a little different than targeting a non-backed regime that takes advantage of children. I'm not sure though, maybe I don't understand your logic and you're making all sort of sense in your world. There are certainly other bad people in the world, but to make a statement that kony's are everywhere is humorous. I knew about this movement beforehand, and I continue to support them. Kony certainly doesn't hold the power he once did, but he is still out there and someone who has crimes as autrocious as these should be punished.
Ah here my friend, is where you prove to be dramatically un-aware of the world's way of functionning. Please go through a minimum of international law to say "in your world".
Please dont get me wrong, i support these actions, I just feel undermined by the fact that people only have heard of this. Hey who knows, you might even find out in a year or two something is going on in Syria. But i doubt it, you should probably all go back to watching american idol.

So...
All I'am hearing now is how invisible children is a group worthy of all our respect while giving a dollar to support the cause for every 100 they make in profit. Also getting the wire that Kony is what he is today because of the sitting (endorsed by the usa etc etc)regime to this day is commiting mass murderings, including children and women of among others Kony's people. Save the children, give Uganda more and better military grade equipment to deal with the problem... Also something about oil being found?
Someone better make a good writeup soon. Its Africa so I'am in no way suprised the tribal killings goes on and on with new methods to this day, whatever group at the top for the moment getting a pat on the back and some shiny toys in exchange for natural resources.

| The idea was the get the message out, I am pretty sure they have done that. The things they are selling though are ridiculous. Can't help but think this is a money making scheme. |

I wonder if being a child soldier in Kony's army is really worse than the life these kids might otherwise live. I mean we're talking about the poorest of the poor in Africa. Being a random Ugandan peasant probably means slowly starving like a mark in some rural backwater with very little outside help. Exposure to tragedy would be a generational constant that's soaked into the fabric of the society. I don't see a source of hope there, although I imagine religion does a lot to keep these people going.
Being in the army gives hope that you might overthrow the corrupt and brutal government (the same one that wants to make homosexuality punishable by life in prison and/or death, and yet retains the US govt's support). You are given food, camaraderie, travel, adventure, excitement, sex, money, power and a sense of purpose. Seems pretty brutal to us but in a savage place like that I'm not sure it's any worse considering the range of outcome you're otherwise looking at (many of which involve an early death anyway). On March 08 2012 17:07 MercilessMonkey wrote:http://pomee.tumblr.com/post/18899601760/kony-2012-causing-more-harm-than-goodI haven't seen this posted yet, and I thought it was well written and brought up a few good points. The semantic nitpicking of word choice is unnecessary imo, but all of the other points are pretty good to consider. The main points for those who won't read: - LRA has largely moved on from Uganda, timing of this whole thing doesn't make sense
- Commercialization of this movement for personal gain
- Ignoring broad, important issues about government structure and military/foreign involvement
- Effectiveness in actually helping the Ugandan people, and whether or not they want this
Worth reading and worth thinking about.
Read it and can provide obvious flaws. 1) Yes LRA has laregly moved out of Uganda, but US strategic advisers were placed there first. 2) Well yes, they do personally gain out of this. I don't think as much as everyone thinks, but yeah, come one... ofc they do lol.. 3) The government will not be as strong as that of a foreign powerhouse country... Their military and other foreign involvement will be minuscule regardless. Also, US military efforts are not front line efforts, they are tactical and educational. In other words, they are simply attempts to more easily allow 'free', country driven Ugandans, to take care of themselves. Why do you want to talk about a lesser government that most likely has not given any attempt to truly strengthen itself. They are talking about 1 crisis, of people in Uganda, they are not talking about colonizing and policing an African country... As the US government already stated, we don't give a fuck about that country. There is no gain for the US if we help police the country. The point that I'm fighting is completely meaningless with respect to the issue at hand. 4) The affected Ugandan people want this... They want to not be mutilated. I think everyone would want to not be mutilated?... But do they want an overwhelming foreign presence in their homeland? no.... just like the Middle East hates it, Africa and China hated it, and every other country who has been unofficially invaded hates it. Supplying paid men to help build a trained military and police force in order to protect themselves is quite logical, and very welcomed.
Most people arguing against this cause are just trying to get themselves a little bit of fame.. Their not actually analyzing the words that they are saying, and realizing the real meaning behind it. Yes, people have a right to share disbelief in this movement. Not even I am a big supporter of it, but that is because in the end, we are all ignorant. We don't know what's actually happening, and unless you want to get into this all hardcore until you have no life, no job, no wife, and no money, you will never know everything that's happening behind the scenes. What I disagree with is the way people are fighting the movement. These arguments are invalid in almost every respect. If this is why you disapprove of the movement, then you're better off becoming slightly more educated and then backing it. |

It's only been 2 days since I first heard about this Kony2012 thing and it's already apparent how fucking annoying it's going to get. I'm all for stopping violence in Uganda but spamming twitter and other social media outlets isn't helping anyone. Even people on twitch.tv streams are spamming it.. come on, use your own brain, do your own research and stop depending on your friends and twitter/facebook for your infomation, because it's usually wrong.
News flash, tweeting "Kony2012, make a difference" is not making a fucking difference.
