Yes, you are absolutely correct. Stephano is entitled to renege on his aforementioned challenge, however, as a fan I take actions like this into account and while he might not care about the sincerity of his words, I believe many of his fans and sponsors do. Maybe I'm crazy, but as I see e-sports developing into something tangible, I can't help but notice how important public image is becoming. Stephano is just one man though. If he were something more a $5k investment to save face and most likely win many new fans (win or lose) is a no brainer. For example... I don't really care much for Stephano. He's put up some good games, but I'm not awestruck by him, however, after reading his challenge I began to care more about learning more about him.
After some of the past controversial things he's done already (signing double contracts, entering multiple tournaments that play at the same time- which causes tournament problems, etc.), this pretty much reinforces a slightly sour mindset I have of him. I'm hoping the showmatch gets played, although I was really looking forward to Stephano walking the walk of his bet, and not just talking the talk. I see this as another slightly unsettling thing he's done in his career (which has been extremely accomplished as far as wins and prize money go, don't get me wrong).
I feel the same way about Stephano. These are all the supporting reasons for why I am not a fan even though I am a zerg player. I hope naniwa crushes him.
You act like he said solemnly: "I swear on my life and honor to put 5k on the table in a showmatch against Naniwa." It's ridiculous, it was just some chat with Naniwa, I don't care about the prize. Only the showmatch is important, and if he doesn't it then yes I will be disappointed.

I hate to say that but you and a lot of people on TL take things too seriously. If Stephano had said during an interview, or if he had announced to his fan that he will face Naniwa for 5k, it would be a bit lame to change his mind. But this was a chat between two people on twitter, not to the community... You can debate that the fact twitter shows your "private" conversation is a good thing or not but don't act as if Stephano had said to the community that he will do a showmatch for 5k... It's not because you have access to a conversation between two people that this talk is directed to you. |

Tons of people do. Regular showmatch? Yawn. These happen all the time, and are meaningless because there's nothing on the line. Showmatch with 5k on the line? That's dramatic, that has serious consequences. What's wrong with drama? Drama is entertaining, moving, and makes people actually care about what is happening. Pretty funny that Stephano wussed out. He was the one who pushed the 5k, and for him back off after Naniwa called his bluffed makes him look like a punk. It was actually pretty rude...because if Naniwa backs down he looks like a coward, but he accepts and gets nothing. He basically put Naniwa in a lose/lose scenario and has shown he will run his mouth and then not back it up. Add in the fact that he dodges the GSL and it's pretty disappointing. He could be the greatest foreign player ever to play Starcraft but it's obvious he's just trying to accumulate as much money as possible from the scene before walking away. Talk about a parasite.
god forbid pro starcraft players try to make money!
and god forbid that players have more long term goals than sc2... stephano is going to med school.

Why is that sad? Haven't they played each other before? Haven't better players played each other before?
The fact that two players would risk their own money- and that much money- on a showmatch makes it far more exciting. That's something that's far less common. In fact, wouldn't it be the absolute biggest pot of cash between two players that came from their own pockets? By far?
Don't get me wrong, Stephano and Naniwa are both incredible players, and seeing them play a BoX is pretty cool in general. But now that they actually have something legitimate and tangible on the line, as opposed to just bragging rights (which practically change every tournament anyway), it makes the idea so much more appealing to the audience.
It's perfectly justifiable to feel let down if the bet is off (or severely lowered), and Stephano would be the cause of that. |
