| You can say anything you want, LoL isn't an esport in my book, it's a casual game that doesn't take any individual skill to be played. That's the exact reason why it's booming in popularity, because people like easy things nowadays. |

LoL is fun and competitive.
It's just a horrible mess to watch. SC2 is by far the most watchable eSport, but Blizzard is crippling it.
While Riot gives tons of money to promote LoL tournaments, Blizzard does the opposite, charging tournaments money for using SC2. I believe Blizzard takes 50% of advertising revenue from tournaments. Given those conditions, tournaments will obviously start to favor LoL. Also the massive casual base for LoL means more potential viewers. Blizzard being super greedy and trying to make SC2 into a subscription game in Korea and making it more expensive for PC Bangs restricted the player base a lot and that also hurts the potential viewership. |

The funny thing is, a game that loses popularity won't be called a esport too. It will be called a memory |

| Am i the only one that thinks that the popularity of LoL is bad for esports in general? A free game that is (in some peoples opinion) the easiest esports game yet that is going to get oversaturated with people trying to become pro because the skill ceiling isnt SUPER high? People are going to stop playing other games because of the popularity and easy learning curve of this game. I feel like LoL is going to kill esports because it will kill off FPS games and games like sc2, and then when LoL starts to drop in popularity, eSports will have a tough time. This is just my over-tired opinion but I seriously don't think this is good for eSports in the long run. (and no im not a sc2 only fanboy, i have played LoL and it's pretty fun.) |

SIgh both LoL and SC2 are very good games. I think the reason LoL is bigger is cause its a lot more forgiving because it is team based. I also think at lower levels LoL definately takes less skill because there is no real teamwork occuring (There is some) and your controlling one unit TT. I personally found my self playing LoL for hours because it simply was less stressful than Laddering on sc2. I also really dont enjoy watching LoL because it is so much slower and unlike sc2 its really not fun to watch unless you play the game and know all the items. Another major factor why LoL is bigger is because its F2P. But overall they are both good game but yes its kind of sad to hear this news |

As much as I prefer SC2, if Blizzard continues to refuse to properly support and promote SC2, it deserves to die in the free market.
It just pains me that they are killing SC2 despite it's super potential. I feel like Blizzard doesn't even care beyond paying lip service. They have never once addressed the fact that SC2 is failing in Korea and losing out to LoL, nor have they done anything to try to change the situation. If SC2 esport loses momentum, it will kill game sales too. |

| I think people don't get it when they say lol isn't a esport because it requires less skill. its not about the skill level, its about the popularity. Broodwar takes more skill then sc2 but look at what is happening to it now?Its popularity doesn't match its skill level yet sc2 with a lower skill level is more popular then broodwar now. No matter how much skill is needed for a game, it won't ever be a esport UNLESS people take interest in it. This is when sponsors will take notice and spend money on those teams who play that particular game. Last edit: 2012-03-14 20:42:22 |

And while it's great that Riot puts so much money back into the tournament scene, they do that because they need to buy loyalty from their players - otherwise they will just switch to the next good free game, or even the next MOBA game. They know they need to build a strong foundation because DOTA2 and Blizz DOTA will hit them like an earthquake.
The problem is, while DotA2 is a harder game to learn how to play and play well; it will not get the following just because of how easy LoL is to pick up and learn. To be honest, I don't see DotA removing that many people from LoL because of how causal and beginner friendly it is; even with DotA2 being free to play with all the heroes unlocked and how many different things you can do and still be viable.

as a casual gamer I don't like Dota 2 that much. I think LoL is better. It's simpler, fun and easy. I don't wanna spend my free time after work to play some difficult game where you really need to work hard. I think its nonsense to finish off your own minions, I know it comes from Warcraft 3 (where people used to kill own units so that enemy hero didn't get experience) and it diffirintiates good and bad players, but its stupid and not fun. Why the fuck you hit your own allies, it doesn't make sense, lol. You people need to realise that gamers are casual now. No one gonna create esports scene for a bunch of oldschool die-hard fans of so called 'serious games'. |

DOTA2 is a prettier game to look at than LoL, the auto observer AI is incredible, and it's a more balanced and higher skill game.
It just needs to come out, every day it's not out is another day it falls behind LoL. |

| I'm curious, why do ppl even play this game? Just because its free? I could barely play 2 mins, before I left the game. After Dota or even Hon this thing is pretty retarded. And now the tournament with 1.8 mio. The world is going down. |

This is really interesting news, I really thought with the implementation of DOTA2 that LoL popularity would significantly decline, but it seems that it's instead increasing? Did Valve miss their window of opportunity to topple Riot from King of MOBA position with THE most iconic MOBA game ever? O_o
Either way, I think that dynamic will be key in determining LoL's long-term viability and fate. SC2 as so many other people have mentioned has problems with it's own developers... *COUGH* Blizzard and post 2-yr 0.2 Bnet UI and nerf/buffhammer on steroids and active attempts at profit-guzzling from gaming tournaments... *cough* Edit - AND NO LAN. -__-"Last edit: 2012-03-14 20:44:16 |

DOTA2 will be free, it simply has to be given the competitive environment. TF2 going F2P was obviously Valve testing out their F2P system and ideas for how to monetize DOTA2. |
