week and a half Agony. It comes out on the 21st. Half a week for this weekend (no episode/Korra debut on Nickolodeon) + Another week after that.

I'm pretty psyched for this show, especially since they aren't doing a repeat of the original show with new characters (as far as we know so far). I'm hoping this won't turn into something lame like making it all the way to the bender championship or w/e the producers decide upon. My hope is that she will learn air bending through the competition, but then transition into saving the city and going chushi gangdruk (refer to Tibetan military, since the show has blatant Buddhist ties).
I'd be really depressed if this was only one season, even though I realize they can't do more than one season in republic city. Maybe she can fail to save republic city and then have a greater importance? Either way, this should be an amazing show and a great follow-up to one of the best animated series produced. |

Perhaps obesechicken13 is referring to how close elements of both Zuko's and Azula's personalities are and with the right, or wrong, influence on either of them they might have been more than hated siblings and closer to rivals.
Azula's character is, after all, particularly tragic whilst Zuko simply overcomes his tragic fate through a great number of trials. Their final agni kai strongly reflects the clash between a prince of the firelord who has found his path through tight bonds and the princess of the firelord who lost her path by being lost and alone.
Of course perhaps obesechicken13 didn't mean this. I just like to think people think about this stuff as much as I do. |

If you watch the beach episode you see Azula and Zuko talking to each other, not fighting. They just seem like a brother and sister in a dysfunctional family. I understand that they hated each other, that Azula had tried to kill Zuko after capturing him failed. But they seemed to put that past them. They seemed so close.
The beach was the first time Azula showed any weakness. |

Actually rewatched parts of the Beach episode and I think I understand what you mean now. Close is too strong a word to describe it imo but you are right in that it is probably the only moment in the series where you see the two actually bond a little. Azula has always been lying and manipulating people throughout the whole series so rarely do we see her show her genuine emotions to other people besides anger. I'm thinking of the scene where Zuko is at his old summer home and Azula meets him there. It seemed Azula knew he was there and went there to bring him back to the beach. Its the only scene throughout the series where the two actually seemed like siblings. Just the slight interaction the two had alone, even if not much happened seemed real. I actually didn't really like the Beach episode at first because I thought it was a bit too childish but if I think about it more, its a really important episode.
Even after finishing the series I constantly come back to it and my understanding of the show always seems to change. Rewatching key scenes and episodes here and there makes me realize how much I missed my first time watching it. Need to find time to rewatch the whole thing again. And yeah, Azula is meant to show how context matters. When she freaks out at the end of the show, it's because she's only ever had power in her life and has never known what it's like to have friends and love. It's a tragedy in a way. To be honest, she is one of my favourite characters. Her dialogue could be straight out of Game of Thrones in a lot of places in how she handles situations.
The show is written very brilliantly actually. Zuko and Aang are character foils of each other. You often see their stories parralled, as when Aang struggles with a particular theme Zuko is doing the same. For example, the Avatar State is similar to Azula in theme. When Aang vows to never go into the Avatar state it's the same episode as the one where Azula tries to capture Zuko in the second season. At the end of the second season, when Zuko is faced with the decision of to do the right thing and join his uncle, or take the easy way out and help Azula, he chooses to help Azula. Likewise, Aang decides to go into the Avatar state as well and ends up getting killed and is reborn thanks to Katara. Zuko, likewise, is also reborn at this point and becomes the Firelord's son once again. Both made a mistake in how they handled the situation with Azula and the Avatar State. In the final episode of the show, Aang is able to overcome his destiny and the Avatar State, and likewise, Zuko faces Azula and is able to overcome her - both fulfilling their destinies. At this point both characters are able to "complete" each other. When Zuko spares Azula, Aang spares the Firelord.
It's actually pretty damn epic how the two characters are foiled so incredibly well. If you watch the seasons with this in mind, you can atually catch on to how they both need each other to reach their potentials and how their stories are paralleled quite brilliantly. |
