Well in regards to complaints: people are honestly looking at A:TLA with rose tinted glasses. Objectively speaking, the majority of the episodes in the first series don't hold a candle to A:LOK so far from technical, plot and development points of view.
People sort of just remember season 3 which had fewer 'filler' episodes and had great multi-part episodes and one of the better arcs after Zuko joined and goes on a trip with everyone basically. But tell me this episode is worse than any of the following and I'll be shocked:

Someone will take offence to some of these episodes being worse than the last one somehow, but they're the same people who think the plot didn't move forward...somehow. I don't know what people who think this class as "plot", but I guess it's got to involve Amon to be plot nowdays =P |

More filler episodes ='s more episodes in general!
I don't see the problem if they are entertaining, if they develop the characters a bit more, or if its done cleverly, I'm all for it. If you are a fan of the series, you will have no problem with these, and if you claim that TLA had no fillers, you clearly did not watch it.
If it is that much of a problem, you can wait for the season to end so you can watch it all in a single run.

This episode was bad.
Just because other TLA episodes were pretty bad doesn't excuse this one at all.

When the whole show is out and people rewatch it no one will be bothered by episodes like this one. They'll be more than happy to watch even a little more of what they loved following. Right now most of us are eager to see awesome avatar bending and what's amon's story which is why the other parts of the series get neglected. I personally didn't find anything bad in having an episode like this one. I don't look at it as filler, and even if it was intended as one I don't mind.

I watched this and really liked it. I started doing the old show, The Last Airbender, and the first 3 episodes just seem geared toward too young an audience for me to enjoy it too much.
Does it get more mature as the show goes on, or should I stop now? |

| This episode isn't filler. Filler refers to episodes that are non-canon, and in Korra's case, all the episodes are intended. It's not like it has a manga storyline to follow. It's also a Nickelodeon show. TLA had a bunch of minimal plot oriented episodes that were great and helped pace out the show pretty well. |

Why don't you continue to criticize a children's show to your incredibly high standard some more. Or better yet, why don't you produce a better show with no "awful" stuff.
Shut up and just watch the damn show. You're the one making the decision to watch it, so why get all air-bent out of shape because they are developing the characters a bit more?

I believe this to be true as well. One of my friends isnt enjoying Korra as much as he did TLA, but he also didnt watch it (like I think many did) until it was already over, why? Because it didnt seem great on week to week basis. TLA had a lot of fillers and the first season was pretty weak as well (well the first part of the first season). TLA was easily a character driven story. The show didnt get good until you developed a liking to the characters and saw them in different situations.
I mean he told me it was moving too slow (doesnt like the probending), and that to me screams that he doesnt like waiting week to week. Being able to watch the next episode instantly makes averages episodes okay, but waiting week to week you build up hype for every episode because its only 30 minutes a week will make average episodes long weak. I mean I was really hoping it was going to be an hour long each episode (especially when I heard it was only 26 episodes) but I think the show will seem better as a whole when it finishes.
Lets not forget this is episode 5. Even in the short season of 12 thats just the middle. Start with a bang, use the middle for some development (which may be a bit more boring) and end with the bigger bang.
(As for fillers, I havent seen the 5th episode yet actually, but fillers in TLA were always pretty good at atleast accomplishing something character development wise. May not be as exciting as seeing what the Chi Blockers are doing next, but it does help the story imo. The Tales of Ba Sing Se made me love Iroh so much more, before he was just a cool uncle, then that episode, wow...) |

In real life, if the guy doesn't express his feelings or make the move, the girl will think he's a fucking loser who doesn't have any balls. So the creators of Korra obviously made it like this so that all the teenage boys watching it will be like: "Fuck yeah, this is the life." Little do they know that they're going to become 20 year old virgins in the future because they spent their time watching anime and playing computer games instead of sport.

But anyway, I think in the next episode things are going to start getting really awesome. In the season previews it shows Amon destroying the roof of the probending arena, and (as the teams are already at the finals) it seems like this would be the episode it happens in. You should definitely watch The Last Airbender. Yes it seemed geared to younger kids at first, and I think the first few episodes of Korra were better than the first few episodes of TLA. But it really does turn into a fantastic show later on (one of my favorites of all time), and it does get more mature.
You said you likes Korra so far, so I'm sure you'll love TLA if you give it a try, it gets sooooo much better! |

| Just saw episodes 1 and 2, and this is shaping up to be even better than the original series. Though it obviously lacks the same scope I'm hoping it's going to make up for that with depth. Now I'm just wondering whether I should watch the episodes, delicious treats as they are, one by one or wait until the entire season is over. |

I have to say, I was surprised to see the comic relief to be treated like a serious romantic prospect (with a lot more direct chemistry, actually). I'm expecting everything to circle back to Mako eventually, given how these things always go...but considering the production crew, I wouldn't be shocked if they went the unconventional route. |
