Hello to all my fellows here. I read about news in magazine recently about case of cremation against burial, especially in America and Europe, that it is becoming popular and people want it for their choice, and I want to know what you guys think, especially that almost all are American.
As you know, to Muslim it is forbidden, because there are specific instructions that the body must be buried, and how to do so. In short, it is tradition, as it is not an instituted method of respect to dead, and in fact inceniration, eaten by vulture or beast, and left alone in the dessert or open are considered sacriligious. I try to understand this as tradition of my religion, and in fact afraid to go against it. But I keep an open mind, especially with all the modern influence in the society.
On the other hand, I perfectly understand cremation. It is practical, fast, and cheaper. There is less burden for everyone, especially for family. I also see one of its practical advantage is the less emotional approach to death. You can mourn it, but not really dwell on it as you would when there is body for days. Personally, I think I'd prefer this.
What do you think? Would you favor burial or cremation?

They don't take up space or waste ressources, the dead bodies are actually getting mineralised to feed the ground they are buried in, and therefore feed ALL kinds of animals and plants. In other words burying is good for the nature, while cremation just wastes your valuable minerals and burns them for some useless heat. Think about it.

[x] organ donor, I don't give a flying f*ck what happens with my 'meat' after I'm finished using it.
Whatever is the cheapest and/or ecologically sound.
Here in Germany, it is even allowed to be cremated and then to buried in urns that dissolve within a year or so, maybe that is something for me. And of course, I have no clue what burial customs will be like in the far future, which I hope to witness. |

I am a cultural muslim, meaning that I'm living in a country where Islam is the predominant religion (Turkey) but I am not a religious person, actually threading the line between agnosticism and atheism. With that in mind, I think cremation feels like the best option. Not only it doesn't occupy space as burial do, but it is cleaner, faster and most likely cheaper. Given the option I would prefer it, but sadly it isn't really possible for us "Muslims" which the state wants to brand pretty much anyone born here from the moment of birth without any regards to what the newborn would believe in, like, 18 years or something. Oh and as someone else have noted, I would donate my organs aswell. They're no use of to me, but they could save lives.Last edit: 2012-03-23 00:10:15 |

| I really don't care what happens to my body at all, but I'd go with cremation as well, simply because of financial reasons. I wouldn't want whomever is left of my family to pay and care for the bigger space that is needed for a burial. I come from a family where taking care of the grave has always been a point of tension between my parents and uncels/aunts and the reason for scuffles. A cremation may not completly avoid those problems, but is at least able to lessen them. |

Cremation, definitely.
Also on the same subject, open casket funerals are creepy for all involved. They are not a good idea. |

| When I die I want any useful organs taken out to be donated, then I want a non-degradeable box containing a description of my life implanted in my chest and then I want my body thrown into a swamp. So in a slightly abstract way I guess that means I prefer burial. |

| There aren't that many cremation services over here, but burial services are abundant and easy to find. I heard burials are also cheaper by comparison, but I'm not sure if this is true. Apart from the concern that finding a crematory, organizing the event and explaining to people that aren't familiar with cremation why this is happening would be additional burdens on my family, I think it is prefferable for the reasons in the above and below posts.
