I don't know too much about that 'spectate' part, the article only points out eSports instead of "spectating eSports" like you stated in the translation. That is probably what it means, but the article does not point it out explicitly.

Oh man, I missed that. Way to shove the shit down our throats...

It's been a long while they've had problems finding sponsors for their SC leagues.

After Bacchus OSL, there was a break for half a year until Jin Air stepped in (owned by Korean Air I think?) to sponsor another one. So essentially, OGN couldn't find any sponsors, and Korean Air sponsored 3 OSLs in a short time-span, partially because the CEO's daughter is partial to the whole progaming scene.

Then the sponsors withdrew from the teams, and kespa made a sponsorless "Team 8".

Then, quite possibly, they couldn't find a sponsor for SPL, so SK stepped in and decided to throw some money at it (I read that SK has a big stake in kespa or w/e) just to keep the whole gig afloat.

The real problem is, I don't know if bringing in this Frankenstein of a Proleague will attract more sponsors, especially if they actually lose viewership during the year of transition due to the understandable and inevitable decline in game qualities.

This is going to be a risky risky move.

Well, I guess it's not too hard to guess that Blizzard is actually putting a lot of money to make the switch happens. If SC2 really catches in Korea, they'll sell a ton more copies.

Oh okay. It just seems that the news about the possible transition came so suddenly that I was wondering about whether Blizzard had any involvement in this.

Also, regarding the rule for not playing 2 consecutive matches of the same game: does this mean that if a player played BW in one of the first 6 sets, and it reaches ace match, they can't play the ace match?

Please don't be silly lol. I've heard that before and I just can't imagine investing that much money just to make your daughter happy. At best you could argue the possibility was brought to the CEO's attention in this way, but the actual decision would have been based on much more rational grounds with the company's interests in mind.

woooow... forcing players to do both games... Guarantees that the games with be half-assed now, that's crazy.

Doesn't this have to do with the fact that the license was coming to an end and kespa had to renegociate with blizzard ?

Now there are some massive fails of thought in here, I think. If OSL has no sponsors this means that it does not get the views it needs. Thus it either needs korean viewership or foreign viewership. In case Koreans are not completely weird (= behave as the rest of the world) they will rather watch a pretty 3 dimensional game than a 2 dimensional one. Thus SCII is at least as exciting as BW to watch to the average viewer.

I am not insulting anyone who likes 2d neither do I say it does not exist here or in korea, blablabla. I just say the amount of people who do is so low it is insignificant.

As far as i am all-heart SC2 fan that don't know much BroodWar i am delighted to hear that at last those legends, bonjwas and minor gods are going to play the game i love, SC2. I am sure it will bring the pro scene to the whole new level, not only on the gameplay aspect.

But that idea with mixed matches in PL, two different games in the same BO is at least bizzare. Very curious how it will pan out.

To people that can't accept the end of BW: If You truly love your players you will love them no matter what they play. And from there, it's a short road to fall in love in SC2 too. With the whole pro scene in sc2, we're about to see different game than it is now. Of course, history is history and i highly respect that part of a BW. But the time goes on, and nothing lasts forever, besides those memories that you will keep dear...and it's time to follow the flow

So you'd become a dedicated fan of professional bowling if Boxer and MVP and whoever else all became professional bowlers, right? Because you truly love them?

Short summary:

-SK Planet Proleague to begin this May, will be able to see BW players try out their SC2 hands.
-SC2 implementation was possible due to blizzard's persuasion and Gretech conceding its exclusive contract.
-No official announcements, but progamers practicing sc2 atm. One affiliated staff said: "Next year, PL is projected to switch over to SC2 completely."
-How the mixed league will be run is still under discussion, but the most plausible theory is switching between each set, with the ace match being BW in all cases.
-It seems Kespa will be forcing the integration by disallowing the player from playing two consecutive matches of the same game [So players like Jaedong Flash Bisu Stork won't be able to crush noobs in BW all day; they will have to play SC2 in half of their matches.]
-All Kespa-run proteams have agreed not to bring in any current SC2 progamers under Gretech for a year.
-SC2 is evaluated as being less fun to spectate as an e-sport than SC1, so Kespa and the proteams must provide a solution to this problem to ensure the success of the next season of PL. [I know this will be a controversial statement, so I will include the source in its original form, and other translators can confirm my translation. + Show Spoiler +]

The rest of the article was just analysis without facts so I ignored it.

Thanks a ton for adding even more.
The May start date is something I've been wanting to know for a while. I'm not too happy about the disallowing players from playing two consecutive matches of the same game thing though. I get why they're all practicing SC2 seriously now, they literally have to in order to be played more than once. Kind of also confirms the idea is to fully switch rather than re-split down the line, which is kind of really sad.

Instead of making a coherent argument, your making a false assumption that OSL has no sponsors because not enough people are watching. And then you state Koreans are weird for preferring simply a "2 dimensional game" to a pretty "3 dimensional game". If your theory was true, Star2 would actually be popular in Korea *gasp*, but its not. So...their either weird...or they, and most gamers (I hope to god) don't judge a game by how "pretty" it is or how many "dimensions" it has. Completely irrelevant.

Guess the fighting game community are a bunch of weirdos as well. I understand the notion of updating visuals (and we all agree that if Star2 was BW with updated visuals we'd LOVE it). But talking about dimensions and there's no interest in 2d games is irrelevant and ignorant. I don't mean to be harsh, but please don't generalize and think you can boil this issue down to "2d vs 3d".

Regarding the switch- I can't remember who said it on SotG, but having the old BW pro's switching to SC2 is kinda like your favourite Metal bands from your high school days switching to Dubstep. It might be alright (assuming you like both), but it just feels odd. It just feels better for them to keep doing what they do best and enjoy.

A voluntary switch is one thing, but it kinda sounds from these rumours that the pro's are getting strong-armed into switching.

If you had read it correctly, you would know, that viewers in Korea prefer BW, and sc2 was evaluated as "less fun to watch", and this fact have nothing to do with number of dimensions involved. Saying what you have said is as stupid to say, as bashing artist that using old oil paint instead of new acryl paint.
