It would be interesting to see changes in viewership across different games. People would probably be changing the channel during SC2 matches.

How would they track that? How to they measure TV viewership anyway?

And I'm saying LOL is much better way of attracting business revenue. It is currently #1 game to be played in PC Bang. By mixing two starcraft games together instead of decisively creating separate tournament, what they will do is instead draw away their subset of BW viewers- which is larger than the Korean SC2 community.

THIS is kinda related by the way. About Blizzard directly negociating the rights with OGN and KeSPA, an OGN SC2 League, and the mixed SC2/SC1 proleague.

Overall this proves again that Kespa doesn't give a shit about the loyal BW fanbase. Incontrol recently made a very good comment (on State of the Game) about that and how dangerous this move could be for the SC2 scene, too, as Kespa only thinks about profit and doesn't want competition. I gotta say, upon thinking about this a bit more, I am really afraid for the future of both scenes. The last thing anybody needs is Kespa controlling everything.

Perhaps that's why Blizzard is getting involved, to prevent LOL from taking over. Probably Blizzard is going to subsidize OGN like they did GOM to help get them kickstarted.

Sure they can. Pro Wrestling, at least, tracks it's viewership in 15 minute increments to see if people turn off the channel during wrestler X's match.

Yes, this is terrible news for SC2. KeSPA will turn it into K-pop and make all the players boring.

Lmao, I'm not gonna lie, rift brings up a beautiful point.

I think I speak for the entirety of the remaining BW fans in saying that with the money blizzard spent hyping SC2 up, I'm sure nearly every fan (US, elsewhere, and korea) has attempted to like SC2 and just simply dont. Despite all the adveritising and TL basically converting to an SC2 site, the BW community lives on because we tried, and simply do not like SC2.

Because of this, OGN's new plan seems really dumb. Essentially, they are trying to convert the people who probably dislike SC2 the most (the BW stalwarts) to SC2. Obviously, this isn't gonna work too well.

Rift brings up a really good point, and neither him nor Talin are "flaming". Rift simply gives several examples of stuff hardcore BW fans find laughable with SC2, several examples of why we don't like SC2 and won't convert despite this pathetic attempt.

What percentage of the BW viewership in Korea are actually hardcore purists with a "fuck SC2 and anyone who enjoys it" attitude like a few of the guys posting in here? By and large the Western BW scene transitioned extremely smoothly to SC2, leaving only a hardcore minority behind. Are OGN going to convert the Korean equivalent of maybenexttime? Probably not, but is the average Korean fangirl going to stop fawning over Bisu because he's microing Stalkers rather than Dragoons?

I would agree that in the West anyone who was going to make the jump from BW to SC2 has already done so by now but in Korea clearly the growth of the game was limited by having it confined to a web-based player while the big stars continued to play BW on TV with the full backing of KeSPA. We'll probably find out over the next few months if SC2 can make it in Korea with the eSports infrastructure supporting rather than opposing the game.

BW can´t survive in the long term. It´s 2D. Most BW fans underestimate that hardly any SCII fans wouldn´t watch BW just because it´s 2D. Not pretty enough.

Here is why its a good idea, even if you're a BW purist and dislike SC2.

Businesses only survive by growing, they can't survive a sustained decline in market size as a stand alone business because rather than growing their employee base they'll need to be constantly shrinking it. This causes internal turmoil, which makes the decline faster.

By introducing SC2 and expanding their potential fan base, OGN will be able to broadcast BW for more years than if they continued to focus on BW alone. There certainly still is a market for BW, but because its shrinking, OGN is put in the bad position of having to find other area's of growth.

Opinions on BW vs SC2 are irrelevent. There is enough real market data for a business to make the right decisions.

OGN has to find growth, any business does. BW no longer provides it, hopefully SC2 will and not LOL.

LoL market surpasses SC2 by infinity and it is much bigger than BW, apparently, by your logic the season after the next one will be LoL only.

SKT better prepare a tough LoL roster!

NSMB Wii is the third highest selling game this generation behind those amazingly 3D Wii Sports and Wii Fit. 2D is not why people don't watch BW. It's because it's not accessible enough, you can't watch a BW game and then pick up and play it with any hope of winning games.

I think the theory is, that SC2 has been artificially held back in KR because the hive-mind rejected it because the top BW players and teams rejected it. Basically, Kespa made it not cool and that significantly hurt the growth of SC2.

If Kespa makes it acceptable, maybe things will be different.

Hmm didn't realize they'd be rotating on a game by game basis that's odd. I thought they'd have two different smaller tournaments running together. What are the chances of getting some English-casted BW games if this happens? At the very least I'll be curious to see how this looks if the format stays that way, but I would not be surprised to see a change before its final.

I agree with this and the fact that when sc2 came out for quiet awhile it was 1 base all ins which I imagine made a lot of bw folks hate on it even more (which I can't disagree with, game was so boring when it was all 1 base all in 50% or so of the games ).

I imagine many bw people haven't looked at sc2 much since then and thus dont' realize the game has changed a ton since then. I dunno i'll still be sad if next season is bw's last proleague season :/.
When I think of something else, something will go here

Or maybe they rejected an attempt by a different, inferior form of entertainement to replace, a long running, popular and successful one. WHy would Koreans who have been exposed to Broodwar switch to a less entertaining game. It isn't like the foreign scene where the majority of player came from Warcraft 3 and WoW.
