The Deceptively Complex OCG/RPG

News
  • The ingame chat system isn't great, so I'm sitting the room #TLSwordGirls on quakenet, TL's favorite IRC. I know there're other IRCs for SG, but this way we can all hang together.
  • I made a useful tool for helping you figure out how much stuff you need. SG Mats Calculator. Put your materials in the top areas, the card's requirements in the "Target" row, and you'll see how many more mats you need. I'm working on importing every card from the wiki, but it'll take a while. If anyone wants to help I'd appreciate it!
  • You can look up cards on the Sword Girls Wiki!

WTF is Sword Girls?

Sword Girls is an online collectible card game featuring stunning anime artwork and strategic game play. Sword Girls offers an engaging experience whether it’s your first card game or you’re a seasoned veteran. The game offers hundreds of unique and alluring cards to collect.

An innovative card-crafting system provides an exciting new way to obtain additional cards and use them to build powerful decks. Players can duel each other, fight their way through dungeons, and challenge powerful bosses. Sword Girls is free to play and works on any web browser or Flash-enabled mobile device.

Simply put, Sword Girls is an OCG that pits your deck of female fighters against others. As you win, you gain materials used to produce more powerful cards. You can also levelup your cards or character, fight through dungeons, fight on Ladder, and more.

Sword Girls is different from games such as YuGiOh or Magic: The Gathering because of imperfect control, high random chance factor, and lack of OTKs (and only a handful of 2TKs). More on these later. The game is played on probability rather than strict math.

Gameplay
For a good and thorough explanation, click here.

In SG, there are three types of cards. Character, Spell, and Follower, demonstrated below:

For now, ignore (1). I'll talk about (2), (3), and (4) below.

Character Cards are the hero card of every Deck. They have Health. You win when the enemy character's life (3) is 0 (or less). Characters are automatically played at the start of the game. You must have one and only one character card per deck. Characters usually have abilities that activate at the start of each turn.

Spells perform various special effects and then are discarded. They have SIZE (2. They activate before any of your character cards activate.

Followers are the "monster" cards. The have an Attack(ATK), Defense(DEF), Stamina(STA) (4a,4b,4c), and SIZE(2). On their turn, Followers attack a random enemy follower. If a Follower survives an attack, they will counterattack. Followers can have an ability in addition to their base stats.

This is the field:

Cards are played from your hand to the lowest open slot. You can have at most 10 SIZE on your side of the field. Once both players have played their cards, the battle phase begins, and you lose total control. A coin is flipped, and the winner's field activates a card. Spell cards are always activated before Follower cards. Each field takes turns activating or attacking with one card. Unlike most card games, you have no control over who attacks who. Your little 2/1/6 monster could attack a 10/2/10, deal no damage, and get brutally destroyed by the counterattack, and you can't tell her not to. This is what I love about Sword Girls: you have to cover all of your bases, and can't just play that super combo that makes you win.

Other than that, you can get the hang of it by playing, or click the above guide link for a more detailed introduction.
+ Show Spoiler [Incomplete Guide to Playing] +

So how is this an RPG?
Unlike most other OCGs (such as YuGiOh's Dueling Network), you cannot just pick and choose the cards that you want to make up your deck. In order to craft new cards, you must first gather the necessary materials, which are broken into categories, Ores and Accessories.

Gathering materials can be done through PvP or PvE. Its the traditional Player vs Player format, with monthly Arena Championships as well. They have a pretty good matchmaking system; more powerful cards count for more "Deck Points", and the system matches you to players with similar Deck Points and similar Win %s. PvP rewards heavily in Accessories.

PvE is done through clearing dungeons. Dungeons are a series of fights which get progressively more difficult, until the "final boss". Clearing a dungeon 10 times will grant you the Boss's character card, which is pretty valuable. Dungeons reward heavily in Ores.

On top of this, you can train certain cards to improve them. Training a Follower card will give you points which you can spend on an attempted upgrade, and Character Cards can be given "gifts" of other cards to gain experience, ultimately transforming into a better version.

There is an in-game currency called Tokens, with which you can buy certain items. But let me say this: There Is No Direct Buying Power In The Game. For a F2P Online game, that is truly mind-blowing. Tokens will let you do tasks FASTER, or purchase a random card from a booster pack, but that's it. And there are plenty of in-game ways to earn tokens.

Looks fun, but the Art...
The art is what you'd expect of any female-centric anime game. There are the super-busty women, the 12 year old cat-girls, and everything in between. But the writers do a pretty good job of making it a joke. For examle:

"That chest! That uniform! You must be a Crux Knight!"
Luthica pulled her jacket closed. "Y-yes, I am."

Between groups such as the Student Government, the Maids, the Cooking Club, and more, the writers seem to delight in just how absurd they can make the fighters. What I'm getting at is, the gameplay is so good that even people who dislike the art enjoy playing. You should be mature enough to play without feeling like a perverted old Japanese man - the game really is a lot of fun and surprisingly deep.

So how do I sign up?
You can start playing by going to http://www.swordgirlsonline.com/ and making an account. The game can be played through facebook or online through any device that can do internet and flash. If you have any questions, please just post here and I'll try to answer them.
I'd recommend doing the starting quests. They explain most of the more complicated features of the game pretty well.

Faction Information
When you start, you'll be asked which faction's starter deck you want to use. Here's a brief description of the 4 factions: Vita, Academy, Crux, and Darklore.

[image loading]Vita is the school faction. The starting character is Sita Vilosa. Vita focuses on defensive play and life gain, but have a few very aggressive cards to balance out.
[image loading]Academy is the "Royal Kingdom", and features many Maid characters. The main character is Cinia Pacifica. Academy focuses on debuffs and punishing you for attacking. They are also good with Size control.
[image loading]Crux is the Military Knighthood faction. The main character is Luthica Preventer. They are a buff- and snowball-focused team.
[image loading]Darklore is the Vampiric/Dark Forces faction. The main character is Iri Flina. The have some of the strongest bruisers, and many self-buffs.

You can also mix & match to create a hybrid deck, or include various neutral cards.

Once we get several people playing, we can pick a channel to hang out in (there are 5, I hang out in 4). Looking forward to playing with TL soon! Again, if you have any questions, please just post here and I'll try to answer them.

There are quite a few people playing. People who have been playing for longer have stronger decks.

I played it a little with the Darklore starter, didn't like it and started over with the Crux deck. It's pretty ok I guess, but getting good cards seems to take forever...

Darklore is one of the harder decks to start with, since its combos are strange. If you stick with Darklore through your first 10 beginner dungeon clears, the Nold character card makes Darklore MUCH stronger. High-level Darklore is the best PvE there is, while high-level Crux is the best PvP. But these are all when you've maxed out your deck, so they're basically all theoretical right now. NO ONE has a max-level deck. Play with whatever deck feels best, when you get stronger cards you clear faster and get better and higher quantity rewards from higher dungeons.

Getting good cards is designed to be hard - its an RPG, and not one like modern WoW where the goal is to race you to 60 ASAP. Its more of a Korean-style mmo: everything takes multiple steps, requires a lot of grinding, but is REALLY rewarding when you get better.

Remember to go to channel 4 when you log in! Thats where I and a couple other people hang out. If you add me to your friends list, send me a whisper and I'll help you out in-game.

I added everyone in the thread so I can help out with Gym training :D
What are the best things to spend tokens on? Buying boosters seems silly, even though that's what I've been doing ><

I should have the memberlist updated. Please do add everyone and help with gym training whenever you can, by going to friend, clicking our names, and then clicking "Help".

Save your tokens. You'll need them later on, and not having to pay for or run through surveywalls is a big help. Technically you never need them, but... time is money, right?

You missed me. Erzz197 of faction Vita. What cards should each faction be crafting at the start? Or maybe you could give some example decks we could build towards.
Also, I don't really understand the ranking systems in dungeons... Like in this game:
+ Show Spoiler +
I got a B rank for that... Where as if I win in like 3 turns convincingly, I'll get a D. Do they even mean anything?

Sorry! Will add you now.

I'm not exactly great at the game, I just started a little while ago myself. If you need help, I suggest asking Masamune in channel 4 - really smart guy.

The longer your game, the higher the rank. Rank determines the number of Ore materials won at the end of a match.

P.S. If you've got suggestions for things to add to the OP, I'm all ears. Right now its a good intro, but not a good organizational tool.
