CBA doing my homework on this organization, but hopefully it's actually one not taking the lion's share for itself and most of the rest to local dictators, directly or indirectly. Sadly, knowing several people working at various places in the hierarchies of some of those organizations, it's crystal clear that the vast majority of the secular organizations are at best inefficient, at worst scams, with various degrees of corruption and bribery. Even when the money actually ends up where it should, locals sadly get robbed by local thugs or the dictators' men at arms anyway. And the religious charities (every one I know about anyway) do religious endoctrination first, and feeding second. Not to say giving to african charities is a bad thing in theory, but please do your research before, and give to the safest / most proven charities (those involving young european/american volunteers on the premises usually).
That said, GL to Athene.
The fact that kellymilkies, who is an individual who lost the respect of most of the community for several reasons (poor casting being the least of them), is promoting this is also another "meh" factor imho.Last edit: 2012-05-05 20:03:52 |

This is a great cause and I really like that Athene decided to do some good with his huge fanbase, however this kinda irks me the same way as Bono or Madonna.
Yes, off course they do a lot of good, but it's still a cry for attention from a guy that had infinite attempts at getting more attention. Of course it's much better than his usual shennanigans like his "I'm the best at starcraft 2 because I had Kiwikaki get my account to nr1 GM" and his "I made a video where I explain my discovery of secrets of universe and physics even tho I have no physics or math education".
Also it dosent help that this is being posted by Kellymilkies who had a similar trackrecord of jumping on the gaming bandwagon that got her the most internet attention, right now this is it.
I herd of this charity before, but I much rather donate directly to a cause that I think is worth it than being guilted by an internet attention seeker trying to kill him self by not eating.

| When I first heard of Athene I kind of hated him, but after seeing that video where he got people to donate money for that girl's wheelchair, I've had nothing but respect for him. This just makes him cooler in my eyes. |

The money is donated directly to SaveTheChildren. The OpSharecraft link just lets them keep track of donations related to the project, it doesn't mean that Athene ever has even the opportunity to touch the money. SaveTheChildren has confirmed this. |

| There is a Q&A with the people from save the children, which shows everything is legit, or failing that actually watching any given stream and seeing how humble he is about the whole thing. Why waste your money on something like this? Why "feed the kids" now so they can starve next year? Why expose a million dollars to bureaucratic inefficiency and corruption?
Why not invest that million dollars into projects that actually have return, have the potential to create jobs, and have the potential to help everyone permanently rather than temporarily? |

Then give us a link to a project that does this, does so reliably, and of which we are certain it is not corrupted.
