Multiple reasons actually. 1. The tournament was invite only. 2. The tournament featured only 16 players (even playhem daily have more players). 3. The tournament was not held by a well-established franchise. 4. The tournament was not considered especially prestigious.
Well, 1. 2011 MLG Global Invitational was "invite only" 2. 2011 Blizzard Cup was played with just 10 players. 3. This was the first event, how could they be well-established? 4. Seems more prestigious than Iron Squid or Home Story Cup, with live audience, marketing and stream. 5. Prize pool was great as a premiere tournament. But... this is not a big deal. I agree we should not consider a lot of championships as premiere, and this is a subjective analysis anyway.
1,2. Just because a tournament is invite only or 10 players only doesn't mean it's not a premier tournament. It's all of the reasons combined, that make this a major tournament. Not just one. 3. Well they did a lot of events in other sports, but not in SC2, so they aren't indeed. 4. Many players canceled this event because they wanted to do other things. So then you can't really call it prestigious... 5. Prize pool is only a very small factor, and it's not even included in the definitions. Not relevant.
