Yup, I can see both sides to the argument in SC2 being a new challenge for them and now they have to sell the game. In the other light they're being forced to play a new game, which creates more tension to deliver good results.

For some players it could be a welcome change considering they either cannot break into their team's PL rosters or they've been there done that.

I like to focus more on the positives though. :D

Considering how ignorant you are and there have been posts and posts of discussion about it yet you decide not to search for yourself, how about no?

The other guy was right. You don't know what the hell you're talking about when it comes to correlation between VOD accessibility and KeSPA transitioning to SC2.

Why don't I know what I'm talking about? He said he didn't want to pay for VODs. Monetization of BW was one of the key areas of failure for the game. Please educate me if you think differently.

Sorry, but vod sharing is why after the fall of broodwar.net why so many of us migrated to sites like teamliquid.

I won't be paying for an account for a game I haven't got to watch a lot of high level games.

There's plenty of free vods out there featuring the higher skilled players.
Off the top of my head I know Assembly, MLG, IPL, Iron squid and IEM have vods from all their tournaments up. It's not the GSL but all of those tournaments have code S players in them and the quality of their play is not signifigantly different then when they play in the GSL. MMA, DRG, MC etc are either playing their best on a given day or they aren't, regardless of where they are.

The key areas of failure were:

1. Savior match-fixing scandal.

2. Blizzard being dicks trying to get money out of the non-profit Korean BW scene (KeSPA is non-profit)/kill the BW scene to make way for SC2.

3. Foreigners sucking (this made it suck on the global scale, not in the Korean scene which didn't care and reached it's peak 10 years after game release).

The lack of monetization is what made BW prevalent in the first place, as people were able to play it for cheap in LAN cafes with LAN support and across multiple servers.

see it's funny, anytime someone says to watch a certain sc2 matchup that is supposed to be awesome (not saying it wasn't) they can't post a VOD of it. Anytime someone says there's an awesome BW VOD, they post it usually, or you can find it easily. I don't think I could ever get into sc2 if I have to pay for VODs. Sorry Blizz, I won't pay-to-play, and I won't pay to watch people play your games.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I would really like to see that MMA vs DRG game if possible

Blizzard Cup finals is free to watch here
http://www.gomtv.net/2011blizzardcup/vod/66700/?set=1&lang=kor
(Korean or English commentary, just need to have a GOM account or signup with facebook/twiter)

Only GSL has paid vod (live is free). 100% of the other tournaments have free vods I think.

yeah one thing i want to add is that i can watch just about any BW game that was aired on TV (through TLPD) but I have yet to see a single Korean SC2 VOD. Watching VODs connect people to the game, without VODs i would never have liked bw to the point i did. One of the reasons why I have yet to connect with SC2

google "youku dongraegu mma"; no need to thank me.
-or as 2 posts above suggests, just register free account on gomtv; you'll still get more than enough vods
even for the GSL the vod for the first game in each series is free also, last time i checked
and the three seasons in 2010 are now fully free too, afaik (though gameplay has changed a lot since then)

KeSPA might be non-profit but the forces that run it definitely aren't. Even if Blizzard were just trying to leech with that whole fiasco, there's a profit in there.

That's correct. Some tournaments wait a little while, but eventually the vods become freely available. GSL vods are the only hold out.

Blizzard doesn't charge for VOD access, GOM does. They're kind of unique in that regard.

Here's a random NASL VOD. It's not really an "epic" game. In fact, the player who gged literally did so out of boredom, so I think it's actually a good example of one of the worst sides of SC2, and one of the problems people don't actually talk about much

(This map is one of the maps that'll be in Proleague)

And, for balance, here's a really long BW game. The BW game is an unusually good one, and the SC2 game is unusually bad. Can you guess what they have in common?

And here is the infamous Boxer vs Rain game, where Boxer started bitching out the game, during the game, because no one knew how to fight sky terran vs sky terran.

There's a common theme connecting these three games

Savior's match-fixing scandal was the camel that broke the camel's back. BW viewership on OGN and MBCGame were steadily declining since the high in 2007 or so. For the others, I think you are confusing monetization for consumers and monetization for corporations (Kespa and the teams). Yes BW became widespread because of easy access in PC Bangs, but I'm referring to the viability of BW as a business. Since Kespa was pretty much clueless in how to actually grow revenue into the industry, it was only natural for key pieces to fail once viewership and sponsorship gave way. I think they realized that you actually have to make money to pay for the lofty expenses it takes to run a professional team (what a lofty concept).

I will agree Blizzard was being greedy in trying to get a cut of the revenue stream at this juncture because the whole thing is so fragile, but can't fault them for trying. Costs a lot to make games.

Just don't blame me once Kespa says they are going to a subscription model for vods. Business is business.

The MMA vs DRG finals is free anyway I think (the one I linked), because it was a Blizzard thing. Or I bought it and don't remember it :O

No one was paying for BW. Giving your product away is not a viable long-term strategy.

Meh, the Blizzard cup final is way overhyped game quality vise because Tastosis hyped it like fucking crazy. IIRC, there was like 3 games that was actually any good, but the final map was actually one of the best games played in SC2 up to date tho. The other 4 games were just roach ling/bling all-ins from DongRaeGu and that isn't good games.

It was given as a free bonus if you had purchased a ticket for another main GSL that was going on at the same timg iirc.

I think people get too caught up talking about hype and forget about the game itself.

http://www.youtube.com/embed/-Rq8f6Pyc4E

This game was great for example. There was no story, no big name players, it wasn't even the deciding set, but it was more entertaining than any SC2 match I've seen in the last year.

I think it is simply a case of bad gg timing in the first 2 games... which isn't really any game's fault.

O haha what you talking about you BW elitist the game has changed so much since 5 months ago. That game is terrible going by today's standard. Rinse and repeat.

Uh, just providing ways to watch Korean SC2 vods for those who asked, nothing more. Watch, don't watch, analyze, don't analyze is up to you guys.

If you ask me, while we fight our little BW vs SC2 verbal disputes, or whatever, LoL in Korea is owning both BW and SC2 hard, and thus it's the true cause for all this mess, rather than SC2 taking over BW.

The Boxer vs. Rain match just shows you how in TvT a map that's easily cut in half and only has 2 narrow chokes is pretty terrible when Siege Tanks exist (with Vikings to give vision).

Too many BW trolls bashing on SC2 what a shame. No one is forcing you to play or watch SC2. People still cant take different game is different nor can they take change.

i am glad BW will be dead. Forever SC2!!!!!!! <3

Saddening to see people like you who clearly don't know how much better SC2 can be. Only if you knew how epic BW games are... but it's okay, some people are satisfied enough with little.
