So I heard you like alcohol? - Page 18

What would be a good drink to start of with, when you have never really drank alcohol and you really do NOT like the taste of beer or whine? Suggestions anyone?

What beer have you had? There are TONs of different beers out there and some taste VERY different than the normal pilsner or IPA.

In any case, start small. It's been said before, and its worth saying again.
Experiment. There are TONS of different flavors of alcoholic beverages out there. Even if you try one rum, and it doesn't taste good, try a different rum. I can't stand any rum except for Appleton Estates Reserve, for example.

As for suggestions: I'll second the suggestion on disaronno, that stuff is quite sweet and not terribly strong, so you can really experiment with how much to mix.

Baileys in coffee is another nice mix that doesn't warp the taste too much. Kahlua in milk is also an interesting mix that isn't too boozy tasting.

Now, a tip to help things is: dark pop/soda like colas and such tends to mix well with darker alcohol, while lighter pop/soda mixes better with lighter alcohol, generally speaking. There are exceptions (I love ginger ale + disaronno)

Another thing is: Beer is an acquired taste. First few times I had beer I hated it. I drank liquor instead and got too drunk, too quickly. Now I've learned to appreciate beer, but I still can't stand swill like budweiser (unless it's free. free beer is almost always worth drinking).

I try to stay local. Montana has some excellent local breweries; the Cold Smoke (a scotch ale) is one of the best beers I've ever had. They also have some good IPA's, but not really a pale ale person.

Another one that I drink (and that more people may have heard of) is Moose Drool, also a Montana brew.

(Honestly, I think Montana has some of the best breweries around. If anyone finds themselves in the area, shoot me a PM and I'll give you some suggestions based on where you're going to be.)

Well bud lights don't have much alcohol, only 4.2%, and you can start at 2pm and keep drinking until sleepy time.

I agree with the above quote, anyone that doesn't like beer could (and should) continue trying different stuff, eventually you will develop a taste for something. Then you can branch out further.

I can't believe I'm about to reccommend a vodka.
If you live in the US or Canada, pick up a bottle of Tito's. I tried it this weekend on a friend's reccommendation, and was really impressed. It's a very good, ultra smoothe, corn vodka. The real seller, though, is the price. I paid a little under $30 for a 1750mL bottle. I haven't seen anything nearly as good for anything close to that price.

^ I second that recommendation. I was looking at Belvedere but the guy working told me that Tito's is seriously comparable for a fraction of the price. I paid like $18 dollars for a bottle, it's SO smooth. The taste, smoothness, and price make it great for literally anything.

I love beer, cider & wine Which all have some nice small producters in France, Belgium, Switzerland. The wine knowledge is also fun & happens with friends or family. Wine's taste depends so much on what you eat with and also year, region etc
However I don't like strong alcohols like vodka, whysky etc It just tastes so bad to me.

I agree, Swiss do have some good beers.

Thou i would dissagree on strong alco part. It's just a matter of how do you drink it.

Also, if we are talking cocktails - If you dare, try Flaming Lamborghini, usually i'm pretty fine at holding my alco, but this stuff rocks.
After 3rd round i aleready barely stood on my feet.
Hard stuff, strongly reccomend.

I'm a fan of bacardi and coke to be honest. It's not harsh so its easy to drink and you don't really get to drunk off of them as long as you aren't pounding them back. Beer wise its pretty much Samuel Adams for me, no better American beer in my opinion. Grey Goose straight up is pretty good too for the nights im trying to not remember. And McCallums if im just having a drink or two.

In Poland beer and vodka are the front runners. I like almost all the beers from the Amber line (Zywe, Zlote Lwy, Johannes and Amber). When it comes to vodka it really depends on the price range but polish vodka is so good. Belvedere, Sobieski, Wyborowa, Czysta de Luxe (with the last three being pretty cheap). Russian Standard is also an amazing vodka!

Other then that, whisky sour mother fuckers!!!

Best real beer - Gulden Draak. The Belgians know how it's done and I'm British so I know what I'm talking about. I can't understand why so many people won't try ale/bitter/beers as distinct from lager/fizzy piss.
A nice chocolately stout: Imperial is good.
Local cloudy cider is the mutts nuts if you can get it.
Favourite spirit - nice chilled Vodka - Kazakh, Canadian, nothing cheap and methylated.
Favourite girly drink - mojito (white rum, mint leaves, lime juice, sugar syrup and soda over crushed ice)
Oh and wines - anything red that doesn't taste like battery acid.
There's a whole world of alcohol out there. Some of it even tastes nice!

So, in Manchester we just had this place open:

http://www.brewdog.com/blog-article/brewdog-manchester-is-now-open

Needless to say, it is fucking epic :D Not only are their regular ales really good, they make two of the strongest beers in the world: Tactical Nuclear Penguin (32%) (when a brewery names a beer that, you know they're onto something good) and the strongest beer in the world, Sink The Bismark (41%). Fortunately for the health of their customers (and their wallets) you can only buy these things as shots.

Can you even brew a beer to 32% or 41%. I was under the impression that fermentation stopped somewhere around 15%. Beyond that, the alcohol content becomes too strong and simply kills the yeast, which is what ferments the beer in the first place. Do they use some sort of artificial fermentation process or simply add grain alcohol. If it's the latter, is it even still considered beer? Do they distill it? If they do, I'm sure it's no longer beer.

Either way, 41% beer sounds terrible. It would be really flat, and the alcohol flavor would completely overwhelm the rest of the flavors. I mean, I'd definitely order it, but I wouldn't expect much.
