| Recently upgraded my mobo to an Asus M4A88T-M. Ever since my cpu fan has been running at a much higher rpm, my main concern is that it's just so much louder now and is quite annoying. I have cool'n'quiet enabled and Q-FAN enabled, yet none seem work. Even with Q-FAN settings set to only activate fan above it's current temperature, the fan still continues as usual. I've tried speedfan without any success either, maybe because I'm using it incorrectly? |

| Go into the bios and set pwm for cpufan. My guesss is you have it directly connected to the psu or you don't have pwm enabled. |

| Make sure your CPU cooler is seated properly with properly applied TIM, too. If you're getting bad thermal transfer, it would take higher RPMs for the same temps. |

@JingleHell, everything seems to be locked and secured, I put a good amount of thermal paste too!
@Boblhead, I will try that this afternoon and post back with results! |

The phrase "a good amount of thermal paste" scares the piss out of me. Define, please? |

@JingleHell haha I didn't overdo it I'm sure, just enough to cover the whole area, it was my first time so overdoing it was also a concern, but I think it's fine.
@Boblhead how would I go about enabling pwm? I know I have the cpu fan connected a socket labled "cpu fan" and I know my fan is a 3 pin. |

hmm if it isnt a 4pin like most new CPU fans, then another thing you could try is buying a simple fan controller. I've used this Zalman controller for several cases in several different pc's. You will be able to stick it inside the case or outside depending on how your setup is. Most new CPU fans are PWM supported.
just monitor the temps if you have it running at lowest mode just incase your not undercooling your machine. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118217 |

Which method did you use? 3-5mm ball? Was it one of the products that comes with a little brush and you're supposed to paint crossed lines? Was it a thin film of it that you put on the whole processor?
I know this isn't the point of the thread, but better safe than sorry, eh? |

My thermal paste came with a brush, and I just sorta brushed it on and made sure to get everything. It isn't "thin" but not a huge amount either. My temperatures aren't out of control or anything, seem to be just normal from what I've read. |

| This might not be related to the problem, but you want the thermal paste to be as thin as possible, so there will be no pockets of hot air. Less is more. |

The thermal paste layer should be thick, my saying is always better safe than sorry when it comes to these things. Smear on all you got in the tube and rejoice as the grey ooze spreads across the socket.
As for the fan, it's a 3-pin so it doesn't support PWM. Only some motherboards use voltage regulation for fan speed, yours probably doesn't. This means you're fucked and you: 1. Have to buy a new fan 2. Have to buy a fan controller 3. Put physical resistance to the fan

| Can you run HWMonitor and tell use what your CPU temps are idle and under load (just play some SC2 for awhile and alt-tab). Also what cooler are you using, is it just the stock one that came with your CPU? What CPU is it? If it is the default cooler with the heat pipes then you may want to buy a new cooler. Those one require the fan to be going pretty hard in order to keep things cool, especially with the new 8-core chips. |
