Andy Murray's gold is the biggest victory he's ever had only because he's never won a grand slam. He'd trade that gold for victory at Wimbledon in a heart beat. A heart beat. Look at Nadal, he pulled out of the Olympics to give himself some rest in the lead up to the US Open. He's already won gold, so why bother going for a second?

Are you serious?
Do you seriously believe he would trade that gold medal IN HIS HOME OLYMPICS for a wimbledon victory?

A very undervalued event and a really excellent spirit. Basically it is the olympics without the big sports and big budgets. It has become THE hunting ground for future olympic sports, which is why it is supported by IOC:

Yes he would because its his home gland slam, also Olympics is getting the same respect ranking wise as a grand slam in rio due to the massive success at London.

Also Nadal has pulled out of the US open aswell when he pulled out of the Olympics.

Basketball and Tennis should stay, football don't know so much should really be a pro competition like the other 2.

Oh Germany doesn't care about the UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship?

That's new to me.

Let me clarify: We don't care that you get a spot to the olympics for performing well. The point is, we don't send the best team to these events: The best 20-year old players will simply already play in the adult team. It is just not important to us as a football nation.
Of course there is always players who would love to go and qualify, and they are sad when we don't. But that is not the point. The point is that we don't nearly do everything in our power to qualify, and besides a couple of articles in the major newspapers directly after the tournament, noone talks about it.

Well, just read that first gold medalist got caught using anabolic steroids. She's the Belarus shot-put champion, Nadzeja Ostaptshuk.

Oh and other countries send their best players to these events? Pretty sure their 20 year old super talents also play for the senior side already.

And again, Germany doesn't care about the UEFA Under 21?
They don't stop mentioning that Hummels, Neuer, Ozil, Boateng, etc. are UEFA Under 21 Champions. Commentators, Coaches, Players, Experts.

A hundred times yes.

The Olympic tennis has really been a sideshow on the tour since it was reintroduced, and it was only with the added weight of being held at Wimbledon that this year got more interest and prestige.

Maybe in the future winning the Olympics will be held in the same esteem as winning a slam - at the least it seems like top players aren't outright skipping it nowadays since they've added in tour point -, but for now I'm pretty sure most players would trade in Olympic gold for a Slam title.

I don't know what outher countries do, I talk about Germany here. You seem to think that I am trying to make up excuses for the poor (non)-showing of Germany in the Olympic Football events, just pretending that Germans don't care. But for all I know we really don't care and I have already mentioned why I think that. And as I said, for the women it was a huge upset, Olympia is much more important for the german womens team.
Of course I can be wrong. But Germany hasn't qualified for the olympics since 1988. Given that in the following 24 years the senior team made it into the top4 of 4 European Champinships and 4 World Cups (and 2 finals each). How likely do you think it is that during all this time our youth was so terrible that despite all their efforts they weren't able to qualify? I find that very unlikely.

edit: The U21 championships of the mentioned players serves mostly as an argument for the hopeful coming of a "golden generation". They didn't make Özil, Götze or Reus or whatever play any olympic qualifiers though (but now I really don't know which players would be too old and whatnot, just an observation, I just know that Götze could have played, but didn't).

I am talking about the UEFA Under 21 tournaments here which is the third most important tournament in International Football for Europeans.
Germany does take them very seriously. And Germany has just caught up now with their youth work. Their 1990 win was impressive but there is a reason they have won only one (two if you count under 21) big tournament since then.

I am now out of my comfort zone, I cannot talk about how seriously we take that tournament every year (I don't even know how often it takes place), all I can say is that there is absolutley no outcry when we fail to qualify for the olympics. Nothing that makes officials sweat, newspapers rage or politics concerned. And never in my life have I talked with friends about an Olympic Football tournament or the qualification process. It just isn't even a piece of discussion. Of course that doesn't necessarily say something about how serious Germany takes that U21 tournament. But I guess by now I have made my point and I would only repeat myself, so I'll leave it at that.

Who could have guessed.
I saw her pushing the shot when I switched channels and just after I saw the next athlete I was 100% sure that it was in fact the women competition ^^

The real question is if she still gets the life long free supply of sausages one belarus sponsor offered her for the gold medal

I broke down the golds earlier in this thread for team GB. As it turned out to be our greatest ever olympics I have finished the list. Amazing performance by our guys, if you excluded swimming from the medal table we would have been only one behind USA which is incredible for the 60m of us! You don't really think about it but marathoners are actually running stupidly fast for 26 miles. Their avg mile time is ~4:55, faster than most people can run a mile.

Doesn't look like particularly fit people trying but it does give some scale. I'm fairly fit and I can probably only keep up with him for the first 800m, I don't think I'd last much longer than that.

I follow tennis enough to know no one remembers single Grand Slam winners opposed to Golden Medal tennis players.
