Bought and installed a new hardrive..

Hi TL, recently bought a brand new Caviar Blue SATAIII 1TB drive in order to increase space on my smaller hardrive with the OS on it.

Before I partition it, I wanted to test out how well restoring my computer using a system image works and so disconnected my OS drive, attached my new drive into my SATA1 connector on my motherboard and put my Windows 7 CD into the ROM drive. When i start it up, it does not even attempt to load the CD Rom drive even though I have changed the priorities so that it boots first. If I then include my OS HDD into SATA1 again, the OS boots as normal.

It tells me no media detected, check cable.

For what reasons would this happen provided i know for certain there are no issues with my CD ROM drive or SATA cables.

Specs (just in case i suppose) :

Thanks in advance for any help

Okay, for starters the Windows 7 disc can't be used to image a PC. You need something like Clonzilla or Norton Ghost to be able to create/apply an image. I assume you are just talking about the system restore disc that came with your computer? Second, the Windows 7 disc and any system restore disc is going to be on a DVD, not a CD ROM; I'm hoping that was just a type-o.

Are you making sure you hit the key when it says "press any key to boot from disc"? Are you sure the SATA cable for the drive is plugged in properly?

what i mean is, I have already used windows back up to created a "system image". I saved this directly on an external harddrive.

-not sure what you mean when you say "system restore disk". As i am using a fresh HD, I am using the disk to boot up windows, in the same way anyone would if they are doing a fresh OS install.

- Sorry, it is on a DVD, I was just referring to my CD/DVD reader/writer wrongly. for some reason i still like to call my DVD read/writer a CD ROM drive :D

-and yes all connected properly, I can hear both the DVD drive and fresh HD spinning up.

EDIT: and yes the SATA's are also correctly installed.

Okay, I got what you mean now. That's not really an 'image', a true image is literally a copy of exactly what's on the harddrive that you basically 'paste' onto a new hard drive.

Anyway, so basically you can hear the DVD drive spin up, but you never get a prompt to boot from the disc? Is there an option in the BIOS that has to be enabled to allow boot from disc?

Thanks for the reply toast!.

I've disconnected my OS drive, connected my new drive into a new bay, screwed it and then turned my PC on. I've checked the bios several times and both the drives are recognised in the bios. I then changed the boot order around so that the DVD drive boots first, but then also tried it several times with the new HDD as primary.

After the ASUS stuff disappears, it just reads something about no readable media, please reboot with correct boot device. I can then press any key to continue which just echoes the same message back again.

When i reconnected my OS drive, i noticed that the bios had reset my IDE configured drive (is that the right word?) back to AHCI, i have now changed both back to IDE, although not sure if thats relevent.

The thing that confuses me is that the DVD drive doesn't flash or anything like it does when you first insert a disk during the start up phase, even though it is first in the boot priorites >.<

thanks

AHCI versis IDE SATA emulation would really only be an issue if you were installing XP, Windows 7 is more than likely going to have a compatible driver for your SATA controller.

If everything is plugged in, and you have the correct disc, then to me it still sounds like a setting is still incorrect in BIOS. Are you sure there's no option to enable/disable booting from specific devices in the boot order menu?

Other than that, I would say maybe try unplugging the new HDD and trying to boot with the DVD drive as the only boot device.

will try that, i think i might be able to delete things from the boot list, just slightly scared that i might not be able to add them haha. will let you know some time how its goes.

should I PM you or something?

thanks again

No, post here so that if other people are reading the thread they can offer up potential solutions as well. Especially since I'm running out of ideas for you to try :S

Have you ever managed to boot from this "Windows 7 CD"? Often what people do is burn ISOs as "data" rather than "write image", which means they just have an ISO file sitting on a CD. This isn't bootable.

Can you boot from any other bootable CD/DVD?

When I bought my PC, it came with windows 7 preinstalled, they give you a disk with windows 7 all over it. And no this will be the first time of me using it.

this is pretty much what it looks like. (best image i could find)

is your product key listed anywhere? because if it isnt, you wont be able to install (activate, that is) windows, and that disc is probably some kind of special recovery cd. the key is 5x5 (25) characters long.

What was the result from this? That DVD should be perfectly fine to boot from as it's a legit copy of windows - so it should work.

With that being said, go into your BIOS and ensure that both the HDD and DVD-rom are both found within the BIOS, and try what toast suggested. This should isolate whether it's a HDD/DVD issue. If one of them isn't found (and the old HDD works with the boot disc), then there's an issue with your sata controller conflicting with the newly installed HDD.

okay. got it :D

I think the trick was to wait till after the BIOS post screen, and then insert the disc and let it spin up, I then pressed "any key" and it worked

thanks for all the help.
