I think of tournaments in terms of prize pool (because really, that's what matters to the players and the stake at hand makes a tournament that much more official and a bigger deal)

$26,400 is more than IEM Global Challenges and Homestory Cup, and the MLG Winter Arena. If you think of any of those tournaments as "Major", then so was this Spring Arena.

That's usually the case, but last year MLG's prizepool during the circuit events were quite honestly surprisingly low compared to now.

Just got back from a barcraft, and it was relatively dissapointing compared to most other finals i've seen recently. Not only were the top three zergs, and the matches so quick that the event which was expected to go on to about 2, over by 10:30 pm. But the two final players were players which noone there really knew anything about, so noone really cared about the result, and the commentaters never gave any background information on them other then that violet lived in us or something like that.
Also, there was quite a bit of lag, which was exactly the same on all graphics quality levels, the people there said it was mlg side. But it kind of ruined a lot of the suspenseful moments.

While high level ZvZ might be interesting for zergs looking to steal builds, as a spectator sport it isn't at all really very enthralling. (there were about 20 people chatting and eating snacks not paying attention to stream as the final battle went on, as nobody really cared a huge amount by that point. All the energy was gone from having already seen 8 zvz's or so and not rooting for anyone, combined with constant lag during fights,)

I understand that mlg can't control the brackets, but at least invite more top tiere players of other races so you don't get only zvz's. It's up there with pvp as the worst matchup for a spectator who isn't really familiar with the matchup, especially a bunch of times in a row.

ZvZ with this level of player in SC2 is one of the most entertaining, you never know what will happen. Just be glad your Barcraft wasn't showing off the OSL SC2 play.

GSL is easily the most prestigious tournament, it sits above all else.

After that every foreign LAN is pretty much judged on the player pool in attendance on the day. So Dreamhack's in the past have been a reasonably big deal but the one Thorzain won wasn't because of the player pool. Assembly used to be a kind of tier below tournament, but the one Polt won had a lot of top tier players there.

Dreamhack was held on the same days as MLG and all the "top" names that go to foreign tournaments were there instead of Dreamhack. MLG has drawn the best over other tournaments.

So we are saying the same thing, that MLG is a big win. GSL is 1st, then MLG as I see it atm.

When will the replays of the matchers be available?
EG: Ok we can't have Naniwa in EG because he is so much better than our players so lets get him his own team! "The Alliance" is born.

There were some tvz monsters that got eliminated early by Toss. Who doubts that MMA would have raped any of the zergs in this tournament. Really like MMA but it seems that all the Slayers players are really lopsided and hope MMA fixes his vT and vP. He always goes super greedy in vT and more often than not gets punished for it. Vs P is just not pretty...

you are not up to date. He actually returned to korea and lives there now again. So I don't get your point at all (unless living for less than a year in america makes you an american )

Gratz to Violet. Perhaps the best player outside of the GSL. I think he just made the right choices in the last 8 months, since he left MVP. The GSL format and teamhouse living doesn't seem to fit to him, so he focuses on what he's good at. A great player, a great personality.
The only thing that is left for him, is to start streaming again ^^.

He visited Jeju, his hometown. He's back in America now.

and that's why violet is such a deserved winner here. He had to play all three matchups against notable opponents (yes I didn't have to face MC in a ZvP, but aside from that he faced hard opponents in all three matchups) and won every single match. It's also good to see, that zerg players are still alive. maybe they start to compete in the GSL too.

IPL 4 had the best competition outside of the gsl.

IPL is huge too. Hard to say which is more significant, MLG or IPL, but my point was that MLG is a huge win for Violet

That is a terrible thought. Violet is not a big name player, nor is Symbol. To cut people out for not knowing big name players is just idiotic.

Violet is a big name player. He's won an IEM and finished top 4 at another MLG, came 3rd at Homestory Cup and continuously boss mode every team league for Empire

He might not be Idra or Huk but Violet is definitely a big name.

No. A big name player is a HuK or IdrA. A big name player is a player that all the casuals know. That's what makes them big name players. Violet is a great player and has won things and I love him for it, but he is not a big name player.

Wow. I really thought Symbol would take this. Congratulatinos Violet!

Everyoneone knew Violet was good. It just seemed to me that his play was too "brawler-like" than "elegant", and it's the elegant players that often keep winning. Congratulations to him, it's a big win!

It's amazing how far he's gone since he left Korea.

Of course i know who he is... But at a barcraft a large number of the people there don't follow the scene very closely (at least where i was.) They know some of the foreigners and a few of the top top koreans but it's a lot harder to get a room full of excitement when over half of the viewers have never seen either of the players play.

The main thing i was commenting on there was how during the finals, the commentators never even really attempted to give any information on the players. They just said their teams and races and went straight into the game. So all the casual players, people who watch mabye one or two big tournaments and thats it, and also all the non playing friends who get brought to try to get them into the game have no idea who the players are.

Big name just means what it is. Big in name. Marketable, popular, name-recognition, good fan base. Idra. huk. Stephano. Boxer. MMA. Those are big names. Violet has achievements, Symbol has skills, but their names aren't relatively big, not yet.
