I think this is because they want to get the Code S roster finalized as quickly as possible, so they can work on production and stories.
If Sundance is to be believed, U&D was originally supposed to be two weeks later, conflicting with Anaheim, but "the players chose" MLG.
If I had the choice between playing my up/downs 2 weeks earlier and going to MLG or not going to MLG and playing it two weeks later I would pick go to MLG, seems like an obvious choice with the chance to win money/fame.

holy crap i just realized a way to play with this muta style that would make it incredibly powerful
in that game, july could have say built 12 more mutas as the templar archives were going up and then send in all the mutas to fight and kill all the sentries
you probably lose 1 muta for every sentry you kill. so your spending 100/100 to kill a 50/100 sentry
however, BAM, the moment all the sentries are dead you pump out a ton of lings/banes and a few more mutas, and you attack the toss and BAM he only has a couple sentries he just warped in with 50 energy a piece, thats only a couple forcefields, nowhere near enough, and almost every toss will be attempting to get storm at that point so thats 200 gas wasted not going towards sentries and BAM its just an utter rapestomp because the toss has no forcefields
holy that this is genius. this is so genius the idea just appeared to me in my head
holy crap thats gonna pwn... gonna use this on ladder asap
mutas to the rescue!! mutas will destroy those pesky sentries |

His build loses to a 7 gate push though.. If lure was decisive enough and do a 7 gate instead of expanding, he would have won earlier. |

yeah i guess theres a reason every toss massively scouts for mutas, because of that situation i described above smart fast muta play can demolish forcefields.

It's like, you're not gonna do it the way we want to so they went out and got a new partner, which is great, and I hope it continues to work. But I can't worry about that, we've got Anaheim coming up here in a couple weeks and they made this behind-the-scenes announcement that Up & Down matches would be at the same time.
