| I'm pretty calm my friend, I found it amusing.. as I'm sure many people did. Although quite a few people said they were disappointed. Perhaps they set their expectations too high, lol |

| This was the only part of the whole weekend that I did not enjoy. The pros were all behind one table and so people waited in line to go through the table for signatures like some sort of Disneyland ride, the chairs were set up in rows and there were no horizontal aisles so even without the blaring music, mingling was impossible. Just get some booze and then sit in your seat, children. Then the Kespa players minus Bisu came and gave the same introductions they did the night before and then left. After DJ Wheat realized that people were becoming irritated with him asking us to yell "fuck Slasher" for 10minutes, there was a pro offrace + bronze 2v2 tourney that was so uninteresting that we left. You have a whole room full of people who share a common passion (Starcraft) and arranged an event where you cannot watch, play, or discuss Starcraft. Brilliant. |

after attending IPL4 in vegas in vegas, i had high hopes for this. as someone with a couple connections due to friends who work hard for the san diego barcraft scene, i got to see and enjoy some sweet stuff. from playing blackjack with players to drinking with Whitera, and hanging with Machine and Axslav and more, it was a blast.
honestly, i should have known better, but sweet memories, and a lack of judgement had me blinded. instead of a laidback environment filled with alcohol (its a BARcraft remember) music and cool people. i walked into a tiny convention hall filled with lined chairs that you expect for an announcement in the gym of middle school taht was FILLED with people( at least half of them smelled as if they hadnt showered in all 3 days). there was a (huge) line for autographs for some of the players, but i had already decided that this wasnt the time for signatures, this was supposed to be about chilling. so i didnt even go there. (not that i woulda gotten through the line) there was maybe 500-600 people packed into this hall. there was only TWO bartenders(there is more bartenders than that at a random Applebees on a thursday night), so the line to get a drink (for absurdly overpriced drinks) was like 45 minutes long.
and of course, towards the back, was the VIP section (take a wild guess where all the coaches/players/personalities were) not to completely discredit, there was a few pros/commentators/etc around, i saw Totalbiscuit and his wife, Socke, and the underage Koreans (they looked bored as fuck and didnt want to be there). but im pretty sure the people who did mingle, didnt for long, and/or were forced to.
i didnt stay long... and neither did alot of the players and coaches from other teams. i wont name names due to them potentially getting into trouble. but players from the team that hosted the event left early, and/or were late. players from teams not hosting it left too, personally, i was with a couple players/friends/MLG employees, and we took the party back to our hotel room and salvaged the night. but we talked to alot of people in the scene and the agreement was consensual that it was really lame...
i sat for 3 days watching sc2 in lines of chairs, why would i want to do that again at a "party" afterwards? and while its obvious why you would have a VIP area sequestered from the general public. (if i could get back there, i wouldnt have came out either) but if your gonna have "pro players meet the fans kind of thing" then them sitting back there ALL night after the first hour is pointless... we arent stupid. we know they are all back there.
and most importantly, compound the fact that it was so hard to actually get alcohol.... total crash and burn guys.Last edit: 2012-06-16 11:46:46 |
