Would you say $800 with monitor included?

So does anyone have opinions on buying directly from Newegg? I'm trying to find my way around...
Would it be worth it to buy one of the ready-to-go gaming computers, or should I build mine since they do that? |

| If you feel comfortable building your own PC go for it. It will be much more versatile than buying a whole new PC and in most cases it'll be cheaper. Just make sure you know what you are doing. |

Yeah, about that last part...I have a lot to learn if I did that.
I may have to get the chassis set up for me and go from there. I don't want to f' anything up. At the same time, I do have family members across the country who can help me build a computer.

Have you seen the Dell alienware desktop range? They are so fucking expensive and shit, it's barely an option.
Before I checked today, I knew they were shitty and quite expensive, but after looking... Holy crap... |

Haters aside. Ive owned an Alienware for years. You get a top notch system with a good warrenty and you dont have to put it together.
People hate on dell, and yes Alienware is more expensive than building it on your own. But having it pre-built (saving your time) and having a tech support + warrenty for any part is more than worth it for me, or anyone who isnt an expert at putting computers together/installing drivers and such.
The only downside to dell aside from price, is the tend to bloat your system with crappy software. But you can always remove it when you get it. You can get an alienware aurora r7 base model for ~1500 bucks (i5 or i7 with a 1gb nvdia 460 and 2 gb of ram). It chews through any game you want. I've even had starcraft 2 and shogun total war 2 running together at the same time without any issues, although i upgraded my Ram to 8gb, you may want to do the same.

| Seriously, just take Myrmidon's advice. His way is cheap and easy and will perform very well on all blizzard games. No one else's suggestions seem to fit your needs. |

Darpa, how long have you had your current model? Does it allow for much upgrade-ability?
And yes, the ready-made part of it is a plus. I still think building it will be a helluva a lot cheaper in the long run, and I also want to learn. Anyways...

dont remember the exact graphics card model but it runs diablo and sc2 at highest without trouble.
it cost about 1500 francs so shouldnt be about the same in dollars. even less since dells are cheaper in the US
Edit: yeah definately wouldnt go in debt for a PC.
Is it just me or has Dell really gone bad with it's Desktop offerings? I seam to be getting better system speccs for my money by going with a laptop instead of a desktop. Especially with their rdiculous Swiss prices... |

Not hating. There are times when gettinga pre-built is warranted.
But the warranties on individual components are usually longer than on a pre-built. The tech support might be worth it; I'm not sure how Dell's is these days. But I've heard horror stories of not getting your computer back for months, and even after you do, it still isn't working. It's not worth paying 25% extra for for most people.
Not to mention that if you're wanting to play video games or do anything semi computer serious, it'd probably be worth it to invest a little time in learning how a computer operates.
@ OP, just because you got denied by Newegg doesn't mean you can't go to ANY bank and apply for a credit card. The bank Newegg uses probably just has more stringent requirements than Dell's.
Edit: Yeah, Dell seems to be an in-house credit card through Dell Financial Services, and Newegg's is through BillMeLater. This is why Dell probably said yes, but Newegg said no.Last edit: 2012-05-26 07:05:10 |

Actually Dell isn't inhouse...I don't think. Ever heard of webbank? They're located out of Salt Lake City, the same city as New Egg's bank. I'm going to try to contact the bank that extended the credit for Dell and see if they might be willing to transfer that credit to a general credit card that I could then use for my build.

Ìve had an Aurora R7 for about a year now, no problems. easily upgradeable. The box is HUGE so its got lots of room for more ram and giant video cards.
My only concern with upgrades is that it has the liquid cooling system, I wouldnt know how to make sure thats ok with different components. Although I think you would really only have to worry about the CPU.
Do whatever your comfortable with. I bought this for convenience. For me, the extra 600 bucks was well worth not having to take the time to learn how to build it properly and fuck with the drivers. Then again, you may be in a different financial situation than me, my time is worth more than my money for me. |

If you get the financing to build your own computer, definitely go for it. I went from having no knowledge of hardware to building my own PC in a few days. It is honestly as easy as playing with Legos. The parts all come with instructions for basically every step. The most time consuming part will probably be trying to figure out what you want and when/where to buy it for the best price.
http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc
A great resource, basically has everything you need to know. There are lots of people posting builds of different price ranges every day using up-to-date parts and their prices.
I'm sure you already know this, but you can build the same computer as a pre-built for much cheaper on your own. I don't think there is any reason to buy a pre-built unless you are buying a massive number for business or have a lot of money to throw around. Last edit: 2012-05-28 13:16:00 |
