| Almost thought this was a thread to say whatever you wanted. But a show about it is just as good, i guess. |

In this and with hotbid, Idra seems pretty good with interviews.
Would like to see Nony and Violet in the future.

Day[9] asking for donations and money despite making well over $100,000 a year from his streams, casting, youtube channel, etc. (20k a casting gig).
Don't just start throwing numbers out there that you can't be sure of. Day9's nebulous approach to describing his financial situation tends to rub people the wrong way. I (and nobody else) wants exact numbers from him. That would be an inappropriate request, but he should be more clear. He does make a lot of money from his content, but remember, a lot of that money will go back into stuff he produces (e.g. AHGL).
Oh yeah, that league nobody cared about, and helped the community(or the industry, as he likes to call it) in no way. He probably got some sweet contacts off of it so again, cant really blame him. Also, people do want exact numbers from him.
and they have no right to know what they are
they kinda do when he is asking for money to help him live off esports

Not really. He is not demanding donations with the assertion that he will starve to death if he doesn't get them. He's not holding his content hostage. He's just asking for people to pitch in if they feel like it. Being as how he's basically been the face of the SC2 scene from beta until now, I don't think that's unreasonable. Hell, when you get down to it, it's never unreasonable to ask somebody to pitch in if they feel like it, so long as you're not holding something hostage.
A person's income is entirely his own business. Nobody but the IRS has the right to know what somebody else makes. I don't know when the internet forgot this, but it's actually considered incredibly rude to ask somebody what they make, at least in America.Last edit: 2012-05-25 01:26:40 |

he doesn't have to demand donations, he is a very well respected member of the community, I think it is borderline exploitative and irresponsible to ask for donations without disclosing how much you're making

You're out of your mind. He produces an insane amount of FREE content. No one cared about AHGL? You don't care about, but that doesn't mean no one did and that it didnt take a big investment. It's none of anyone's business what he makes. If people think he's rich now and want to stop donating that's up to them.

Thanks for the long interviews. I hope you manage to get some interesting people we know a bit less than "superstars" such as Idra . |

Why on earth would disclosing your income be a requirement for asking for donations? That seems...absurdly arbitrary.
You can easily choose not to donate. Every single person gets to make that choice. If they decide that the reason they do or don't want to donate hinges on his income, then that's their decision. If they want to donate because they appreciate what he does for the community, regardless of how much he already makes, that's their decision too. Exploitation would be him charging for a service and then not delivering on it. (For example, a subscriber-only daily in which all he does is play text twist instead of teaching us something about starcraft.)
It seems horribly entitled to expect something from him when he's not expecting anything from you.
Actually, for that matter, why would it be so horrible of him to hold his content hostage to donations (i.e .subscriber-only daily)? He's providing a service that is highly in demand, (the daily) so why would it be evil of him to want to make money off of it if people were willing to pay for it? In any other industry on the planet people would be pulling their teeth out at the financial opportunity that Day[9] is NOT taking advantage of. The fact that he doesn't speaks volumes to his character.
But instead, he's maligned for asking us, if we feel like it, and have a little extra cash, rather then telling us, to pay for the service he provides.Last edit: 2012-05-25 01:47:50 |
