Hi guys, This will kinda similar to the "kicked in the balls thread." I was heading to sleep one day and I wondered while I was laying there, would I take my life to save a X amount of random people around the world?( yeah I know, I get bored trying to fall asleep ) I didn't have a answer to it because I don't know if I'm being extremely selfish to not take my life to save 3-4 people I've never meant before. So now I'm asking you guys the same question.
Would you take your own life to save X amount of people you've never meant before/never will see? If so how many people would it take you to do it?
Poll: Would You Take Your Life To Save Random People? If So How Many?None, I wouldn't take my life. (692) 60% 1-6 (227) 20% 10000+ (128) 11% 101-1000 (38) 3% 6-25 (35) 3% 26-100 (24) 2% 1144 total votes Your vote: Would You Take Your Life To Save Random People? If So How Many? (Vote): None, I wouldn't take my life. (Vote): 1-6 (Vote): 6-25 (Vote): 26-100 (Vote): 101-1000 (Vote): 10000+

If it's restricted to people I've never met before, the answer is quite close to the number of people on Earth.
If it's not, then it's smaller, but still probably pretty large.
Edit: Two people have voted to take their own lives to save zero people. Maybe we should get them some help?Last edit: 2012-05-27 09:07:50 |

No.
Maybe if we'd be talking about 100+ people, but even then I'm not sure, it's an impossible scenario to imagine, I have no idea what I'd do if I were put in that kind of situation but I'm willing to bet that fear would get the best of me. |

| I would be hard pressed to end my life for some of the people I DO know, let alone random ass strangers. |

| I honestly don't think I could convince myself to give up my life for anyone that I didn't love/feel deeply for. I might risk my life for others depending on the situation, but give up? nah |

Maybe 70,000,000. I doubt 700,000,000 people dies every year. Am I wrong?Last edit: 2012-05-27 09:18:43 |

If I knew nothing at all about them and they were completely random then no. Who to say those 1-5 people weren't all murderers and rapists, like hell I'd kill myself to save someone like that. If it was like 1-5 children, then I'd be way more inclined to say definitely yes.
100% random it could be anyone on earth? No.Last edit: 2012-05-27 09:11:30 |

| No clue honestly. In a type of situation where my life was at stake I can't imagine what my reaction would be. I haven't been in that type of situation yet. |

There's nowhere near enough options here. I mean, "5+" technically means "5 or more" but it doesn't grasp the numbers involved. For example, I'm sure that just about everyone would give their life if the alternative was the complete genocide of every person on Earth who isn't necessary to maintain their quality of life as well as the people whom they care about, since that would be billions. But 5+ simply isn't enough. Something like:
1-5 6-25 26-100 101-1000 More than 1000 More than 10,000 people, or not at all.
Would still fail to grasp the numbers involved, but would do a better job. I don't know what my answer is, but while I wouldn't give my life for 5 random strangers, I'd certainly do it for a sufficiently large number.
And to answer your question: Yes, it is selfish, but based on the way humans are created, it's an incredibly universal and understandable form of selfishness: I estimate that almost all people, if genuinely offered the choice, would say no to giving their life for 3-4 others. |

It's not an awkward position. It's a biased position. Either I need to die for some random person, or I'm too stubborn to ever give my life for anyone ever. |

"None, I wouldn't take my life for anyone." is a terrible option. There's a marked difference between a random stranger and someone close to you.
