I made this exact same post on incgamers.com and the official forums, so if you're feeling like you read this before, you probably have.
This morning my account was comprimised. I got an e-mail that my password had been changed, and after going through all of the steps to recover it and finally get back on D3, everything was gone. My level 60 monk, who is half way through act 2 inferno with over 100 hours played was placed on some random act 3 normal quest, with no items (which included 2 legendaries), nothing in the stash, and over 1.4 million gold, gone.
This is a cautionary tale. Hopefully I will get my items back. If not, i'm never playing a blizzard game again. I have never once bought gold or items from sites outside the game, I have never even been to a site where that is possible on this computer that I have had for over a year. I'm doing a virus scan now, but I have very good virus software on my computer, so I doubt that is the problem. I basically have everything short of an authenticator, which I got this morning, and my account was still hacked.
So again, if you haven't already, get an authenticator. I wish I did. That is all.

| Yea. You only need to use the authenticator once every week. I thought I had to use it every time I logged in. There are no reasons for not getting one basically. Last edit: 2012-05-29 03:06:59 |

well, I agree.
Ive been using the phone one for a few days now. I want to be on the record as having it so if/when I get my items jacked I can't be "called out" on it.
Im more than happy to type in a number every time I login, as a general principle though.
as always, sucks to hear about this sort of thing, hopefully blizzard will roll you back quickly. |

I'm pretty sure you won't get your items back... I've never heard of companies giving items to people with compromised accounts. So why bother getting an authenticator when you won't play any Blizzard game again?
Btw. I think it's childish to say you're not going to play their game... I mean who cares ? If you played D3 for 100 already, I bet you liked the game a lot, so why quit? People get "hacked" every day, it's very unpleasant and brutal, but it happens, you have to accept it and not blame the game's company, especially if you didn't secure yourself like they said you should. |

| I set mine to ask to authenticate not always. You can set it to ask for every login, but I think that's too much hassle. If the system recognizes a login from a different location, it asks for authentication anyway. Even then, it sort of asks me once every week or so. |

There is a setting on the battle.net account page where you can tick on/off if you want the authenticator to ask you to put in a new number everytime you log in to a blizzard game.
If it's ticked off, I believe it doesn't ask everytime, but only every week or if different computer/IP address?Last edit: 2012-05-29 03:22:25 |

| Change your e-mail address to one that you barely use or strictly for Blizzard games only. |

Yeah lost my raid gear stuff in WoW years ago to an account hack. They had compromised my email and got my account that way, my computer was clean at the time. I still have the physical authenticator here in my desk-side pen cup. Always ask is always on!
Although I stopped playing WoW a long time ago I've never had a problem with my account since. Best couple bucks I've ever spent. |

They've given items back to everyone else who has been hacked.
How is it childish to say I won't play their game? why would I put another 100 hours into playing a game geared to finding items when I know that my account could be wiped at any time? Pissing away that much time is childish because it shows that I do in fact not value the limited time I have to live.
As for not securing myself, you're absolutely right. I'm not blaming anyone but myself. |

Yeah I forgot to mention, they restored all my items, gear, and ingame monies once I ran their little computer scanner to prove I wasn't infected and I had received my authenticator from them. I just had to call them, activate the authenticator on the phone with them (they had the account frozen on their side till I had received it) and within a few hours all my stuff was back on my account.
So no worries on that regard I would think. |

Oh, that's awesome then, I hope you get everything back. And you have a point, but you piss away that time anyway when you look at it from a real life perspective. Geared or gearless. I can see that you have a very different take on life, I think enjoyment and entertainment are not a waste of time, they are needed like work, to a bit lesser degree. The same thing with sleep. But enough off topic. I again hope you get every item back, don't quit on Blizz games, and I hope I won't get robbed lol ! |
