It seems that Blizzard is giving out 250 HotS Beta keys if you log in and rate an Arcade game each day of the contest. Not many people will see it if it is posted in the depths of the 1.5 Beta thread, and it is the first real chance to win a beta key, so I think it warrants its own thread.
http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/blog/6195249/Patch_15_Arcade_Beta_-_Rate_The_Game_Contest-6_4_2012
The new Arcade game portal promises to bring big improvements to the way we all play custom games. It brings with it a whole swarm of new features, including new search options, Game Info pages that will show you everything you need to know to jump right into the action, and ratings and reviews too. Of course, ratings and reviews are at their most useful when other players have already chimed in to provide their perspectives, and we want to make sure this feature is working great before Patch 1.5 is released. That’s where you come in, because your ratings and reviews could earn you a beta key for StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm while you help us test the Arcade Beta at the same time.
If you want to get into the action, playing the Rate the Game beta contest is easy. First, visit your account management page, download and install the Arcade (1.5.0) Beta product you see in the game accounts section, then hop into the Arcade to play. To enter the contest, all you have to do is play, rate, and review an Arcade game. The first time you rate and review a new game each day the contest is running gives you another chance to win, so it pays to visit every day until the contest ends. At the end of the contest period we’ll randomly choose 250 eligible contestants to win StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm beta keys!
Please remember that you’ll need an active StarCraft II account in good standing to win, and be sure to read the rules before you get started.

| If you delve a little deeper into the rules, you find out that a lot of countries are excluded from participating. Only those in "UNITED STATES, CANADA, ARGENTINA, CHILE, MEXICO, PERU, BELGIUM, UNITED KINGDOM, GERMANY AND AUSTRIA" can participate and get a chance to get a beta key. Very disappointing for those not in these countries. |

SarcasmMonster is a pretty good username. This is cool but I wish Blizzard took a lesson from Diablo 3. Giving away beta keys at random is a sure way to get word of mouth going about your game but a pathetic way to have it balanced and finished in time for launch. Should be limited to Master/Grandmaster and not by country. Then later on have generic click/log in every day yay contests for the rest of the players.
Shame, right after D3 too. |

Inviting only Master/GM-players would result in a pretty small player base, considering not everyone would be playing all the time...at the exact same time oO |

I think they need all skill levels to play so they can balance it (roughly) for lower leagues also. I'm not saying they should forget the upper leagues, but if the HotS 4-gate equivalent is impossible to beat at Bronze level (which some people will be at due to time constraints), they should know during the Beta.

Plus Blizzard will be giving a lot of the pros beta keys I'm sure. They always talk about how much they value professional player input and the competitive players got some of the first beta keys for WoL so I wouldn't be too concerned about pros not being in the beta. They obviously will still spend a majority of their time in WoL if that's what all the tournaments are running in but I'm sure the pros will have no troubles getting into the beta. I'm guessing a simple message to David Kim would get most of them a key.

Please note the latter half of the paragraph. "GM/Master should be elected into the beta FIRST, then followed by the general contest/giveaway public". WoL had a extensive beta but given it was a new game there was no precise method to select the best to balance. HotS has an already established hierarchy of players and I feel that before they repeat the 1 supply roach chucklefest; they should reevaluate how they select beta participants in the early stages.
Of course there should be a varied and large beta with all leagues of life. However in the beginning, for the rough and obvious QA that they will inevitably miss (See D3: "Our testers couldn't get past act2 inferno!" and the consequent 3 day release rush that surpassed their QA and found broken and exploitative mechanics in game); Progamers, Grand Master, Master; All would be excellent testers to begin the arduous balancing process we're required to undergo for such a drastic change in basic gameplay. |
