Hello, I am attending a college that requires a touchscreen laptop. I was just curious as to which would be better for gaming. The ones that I am deciding between are:
Fujitsu LifeBook T901 #2 Processor Intel Core i7-2620M (2.7 GHz, up to 3.4 GHz with Turbo Boost) Video Card NVIDIA NVS 4200M (1 GB Dedicated) Display 13.3" Dual Digitizer (Pen & Touch) LED-backlit (1280x800) RAM 8GB DDR3 1333MHz (2 x 4GB) Hard Drive 500GB 7200rpm Optical Drive Built-In Dual-Layer Super-Multi DVD Writer Wireless 802.11 a/b/g/n Ethernet Gigabit Bluetooth 3.0 + EDR Webcam 2.0 Megapixel Finger Print Reader Yes Ports VGA, HDMI, Headphone, Microphone, (2) USB 2.0, USB 3.0, IEEE 1394, Express Card, SD Card Weight (Including Battery) 4.69 lbs Dimensions (H x W x L) 1.48" x 12.55" x 9.61" Standard Battery 6 cell Operating System Windows 7 Professional 64-bit Standard Warranty 4 Year Accidental Damage Protection
Lenovo ThinkPad X230 #2 Tablet Processor New! 3rd Generation Intel Core Processor Family Intel Core i7-3520M (2.9 GHz, up to 3.6 GHz with Turbo Boost) Video Card Intel HD Graphics 4000 Display 12.5" Multitouch (Pen & Touch) Anti-Glare LED-backlit (1366 x 768) RAM 16 GB DDR3 1333 MHz (2 x 8 GB) Hard Drive 500 GB 7200 rpm Optical Drive USB Dual-Layer Super-Multi DVD Writer Wireless 802.11 a/g/n Ethernet Gigabit Bluetooth 4.0 Webcam 720p Finger Print Reader Yes Ports VGA, Display Port, Headphone / Microphone, (2) USB 3.0, (1) USB 2.0, SD Card Weight 3.7 lbs Dimensions (HxWxL) 1.1" x 12" x 9" Battery 6 cell Operating System Windows 7 Professional 64bit Warranty 4 Year ThinkPad Protection The prices for these are relatively equal. The second one look better because of the faster CPU and double the RAM, but it has an integrated graphics card. The main question is which would be better for general gaming. My thoughts are that the second one would be but I could be wrong. The RAM seems to be irrelevant as I've hardly used all 8GB in my current computer before.

Few thoughts:
1) I prefer thinkpads (use them at work) because they're durable as hell 2) You're correct on the RAM - unless you explicitly know you need 16GB RAM, it's a waste of $$. 8GB is even overkill for most use cases. You can always add more RAM later on, even in a laptop. It really depends on what you're doing. 16GB is not enough for me at work on a desktop, 4GB is more than enough for me at home. 3) Do note that HD4000 is not going to be crazy good for a lot of games. It'll be sufficient to play SC2, D3, etc kind of low-graphics games, but it'll be stressed to play some graphics-heavy games on any decent settings.
But I don't consider #3 a bad thing - don't spend a lot of $$ on a gaming laptop to begin with, it's a waste of money. Just get a cheaper portable and an actual gaming desktop.
For a laptop I would definitely take integrated graphics over dedicated (less heat, better battery life), and just not expect to play serious games on it. I really wish someone had told me this before I went to college :\Last edit: 2012-06-10 06:01:10 |

| Honestly, as long as you aren't playing crazy games, get the thinkpad. Everything about it is way better except for the graphics card. And the NVS4200M is a workstation gpu so it wont even necessarily be powerful. Check notebookcheck.net to see how well it actually does. |

From what I can tell from benchmarks the HD4000 GPU outperforms the 4200m by about 10% overall. Essentially the Lenovo will outperform the Fujitsu across the board. Not to mention the slightly lower resolution monitor, which will make running games at the native resolution slightly easier. Keep in mind as the others have said though, your gaming performance is still going to totally suck on anything but low graphics settings with either of these, simply because of the lack of GPU power.
Out of curiosity why does your college require a touchscreen?
-Best of luck |

| I am not quite sure, it's for engineering though. I am able to get either of these computers for free due to scholarships. I think I am going to purchase the Thinkpad. |

dat weight Thinkpad 3.7 lbs vs Lifebook 4.69 lbs
dat ram: Thinkpad 16 GB (wait what?) vs Lifebook 8GB (not that it matters so much)
dat cpu + gpu Thinkpad i7-3520M is superior to Lifebook i7-2620M Thinkpad HD Graphics 4000 may or may not be stronger than Lifebook NVS 4200M, but since it is integrated it most likely draws less power
dat professionalism: Thinkpad is the Lenovo's business/professional line Lifebook has the cool hinge thingy but looks kinda ...don't know how to put it... trashy.
You can easily play SC2, D3, etc on low settings with decent fps fine. Hell, I could do it (barely) with a trashy 2009 Pentium 4 with GMA 3000Last edit: 2012-06-10 09:59:32 |

Your post made sense up to here. Could you clarify how you can get a 2009 pentium 4 model, and how it has sandy bridge integrated graphics. |

Maybe bought in 2009?
Prior to Clarkdale (dual core first-gen i3/i5), so before the integrated graphics were on the CPU package, Intel integrated graphics on the motherboard chipsets were called Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA). Now they're all called HD Graphics. GMA 3000 is quite old and quite different than HD Graphics 3000. |
