T. Müller Özil Podolski
Gomez
Portugal Starting 11 Formation: 4-3-3 Rui Patrício(GK)
Bruno Alves Pepe Fábio Coentrão João Pereira
Miguel Veloso João Moutinho Raul Meireles
Nani Cristiano Ronaldo(C) Hélder Postiga
Timeline of Events:
Germany 1-0 Portugal
72 min Gomez
1st half kicks off 1 min Gomez heads a cross and is well saved from Portugese keeper. Nice start 2 min Coentrao makes a dashing run threw 3 players but the pass was poor, corner though. Neuer punches clear. 5 min Back and forth attacks from either team so far, nothing very potent as of yet. 13 min Bit of a loose challenge from Postiga and ends up following through on Neuer, who then makes the most of that and jumps up in the air in "pain". The magic sponge does its trick though and he is back on his feet, yellow to Postiga for a pointless challenge on the keeper. 20 min Standard possesion football from Germany so far, can't seem to get inside the danger area of the Portugese yet, tense affair at the moment. 23 min Freekick for Germany on the edge of the box. Caused by a challenge from Meireles on Khedira. Poldolski hits it, but the wall does it's job there. 30 min CHANCE!! Ball in from the wing falls kindly to Podolski in the box, 14 yards from goal 'ish, and he blazes his shot way way way over the bar. Best chance of the match so far. 43min German's finally start to turn the screw in the last third of the pitch. Some great passing leads to a fantastic cross from Muller, which has Gomez challenging in the air, but its just over him and falls to Podolski who smashes it back in on the volley but its cleared. Only to Muller who hits it first time but 5 yards pass the post. Portugal looking to sit back and soak up the pressure and hit them on the counter with Nani Ronaldo and Postiga, looks like it's working well at the moment. 44 min Portugese finishing the half the strongest at the moment and won themselves a corner. CHANCE! from the resulting corner the ball lands at Pepe's feet, he smashes it top corner, it clips the underside of the bar and bounces ON THE LINE and away. Goal line technology would of been helpful there but it wasn't a goal so it doesn't matter. HALF TIME! 2nd half kicks off 46 min Great restart by the German's here. Podolski and Muller firing low hard shots both blocked, and the Muller shot was turned around for a corner from a great block by Raul Meireles 47 min What an amazing pass by Bruno Alves, about 50-60 yards straight to Nani on the right wing and he controlled it superbly on his chest. From that Nani pushed forward and took on Lahm before crossing, but badstuber acrobatically clears with a diving header. Corner came to nothing. 50 min Ronaldo chases a long ball hit ahead of him and boateng the right back, he uses his pace to keep it in the charges into the box but the cross is cleared and well defended. 57 min Germans having a few crosses, whiped in from Muller and Ozil. Gomez heads the one cross way over and the others defended. Better from Germany but still not clinical enough. Changes have to be made if they want to win. 60 min Coentrao gets himself in the book with that tackle on Muller. 63 min CHANCE!! Great break from Portugal Moutinho delayed his pass to Ronaldo who was sprinting down the left wing, the ball comes to Ronaldo and Boateng makes a FANTASTIC challenge to block the ball and send it away from goal. Great play all round. 69 min Yellow card fo Boateng for impeding Ronadlo. Olivera comes on for Postiga. 72 min GOOALL!! Gomez is the scorer here. Cross comes in from Muller and it was deflected by Coentrao who got a semi block in but it landed straight on Gomez's head who heads it well into the bottom corner. Looks like this well settle this match. 79 min Substitution, Varela on Meireles off also Klose on and Gomez off. 81 min Ronaldo shot from 20 yards dips and swerves in front of Neuer who does very well to turn it round tfor a corner. Corner came in was a good but Schweinsteiger was strong and heads it clear. 86 min Substitution, Ozil off and Kroos on. Portugal been pressing well trying to find an equaliser with Ronaldo finally getting into the game but Germany are defending very well and soaking up the pressure thus far. 88 min CHANCE!! Portugal break with a ball over the top and Olivera takes it in his stride he cuts it back and it goes through both the German and the Portugese player it lands to Varela who hits it straight at Neuer who to be fair made a great save. Very good chance should of scored. 3 minutes of added time 90+2 min CHANCE!! Ronaldo plays a lovely one - two with Coentrao and cuts a beautiful ball back to Nani who is 12 yards out but his shot is charged down by Badstuber. The resulting corner is a good one but Alves' header goes over the bar. FULL TIME!! Game finishes, 1-0 Germany. Well worth the win i would say all though the last 15minutes (after the goal) Portugal were great value for a goal but it didn't come.

Yesterday was surprisingly good, but today is going to be better!
I think Germany will steamroll the Portuguese unless they let the nerves get the better of them. 4-1 in todays late match aswell. |

Have to agree. Can't see Götze getting more than 15-20min of playtime this whole tournament. Hoping for Portugal to win but I don't think it's gonna happen. More like 3:0 for Germany.
Is Quaresma any good these days? I remember EA's manager 2008 or something where he was one of the best after 1-2 years of playing : ) |

Quaresma is still good, but very inconsistent. He can play at the level of Nani, but he can also play at the level of some Portuguese 3rd division winger...
The real problem with Portugal is the Striker... Helder Postiga is not good enough.... Neither is Hugo Almeida... And Nelson Oliveira is too young and didn't get enough playtime this year... |

| Anyone of you Germans have some info on whos playing? Will the man of big occasions, Klose, play? Is it true that mr slowman himself will play in the central defence? |

CR7 has got to step up. On paper and form, he should demolish this German defence. Maybe he should be played up front? Nani - CR7 - Quaresma, Moutinho - Veloso - Meireles behind ? |

It might be something like this: ----------------------------------- Neuer -------------------------------- Boateng (unsure) ---- Badstuber --- Mertesacker ---- Lahm ------------- Khedira ------------------- Schweinsteiger-------------- Müller---------------------------Özil-----------------------------Podolski ------------------------------------Klose----------------------------------------

I've been saying this for ages... but no way its gonna happen....
Also nani in the middle is not bad... in the game against macedonia(i think) i adapted well....
The only thing that I really want is to see nelson oliveira as striker and miguel lopes instead of joao pereira(red card incoming) |

goal :Neuer
left back: Lahm
central defender: Badstuber, Mertesacker (maybe Hummels for Mertesacker but not very likely)
right back: Boateng (though there is speculation that maybe Bender could play instead)
defensive midfield: Khedira, Schweinsteiger most likely (if Löw thinks Schweinsteiger isn't fit enough Kroos could start)
offensive midfield: Özil, Müller and Podolski are likely the three starters (Schürle could start instead of Podolski at the left wing but that's not very likely)
forward: Klose or Gomez according to Kicker (biggest German football newspaper) Gomez seems to be more likely to start right now |

It's just weird, because for about 6 years now, it's been clear that Almeida and Postiga are both crap players but they are always called for international duty - are they really the best you've got? |

If Löw thinks, that Klose has no problems regarding his fitness I don't think Gomez is going to start.

Believe me is the "best" we got... Portugal was never known for his strikers the new hope is Nelson Oliveira.... but he is too young stil.... |

Lets all pray Klose will start, he always brings some magic to tournaments! This German team is so exciting, I think they will wreck Portugal! |
