EDIT: I am not looking to get an invite, or "get in". I am trying to understand who/if anyone would buy this and what you guys think of it
So like most other gamers, I have a steam account. I am pretty sure I am also signed up for the DotA 2 beta (you know, just in case), however I don't really play LoL/HoN/MOBA games that much, and will probably never really play DotA 2 that much.
With that being said, I just received an "invite" like this: http://www.dota2.com/store/itemdetails/57939587?appid=570&l=english
Now you actually can pay to get a beta invite. I was just wondering what the TL community thinks of this practise? to be fair, they are giving me some items (don't know if they are useful or just cosmetic) and they are stating that the game will be f2p later this year.
Is it a good idea to have people pay for beta invites for at f2p game?

Yeah, when they added the Dota 2 cosmetic store, they added the ability to buy invites. I think it's complete BS and the worst move Valve has done so far, for these reasons: 1. The game SHOULD be out soon. Seriously, the game works perfectly fine, it's extremely fun and while the servers do go down, it's rare and usually fixed immediately. Some heroes are missing, but almost all of the important heroes are there and it's not like the 80 or so heroes we have now aren't enough. And once the game is out, it's f2p, so anyone who payed will feel like a fool. 2. Regardless of point 1, there are so many people who really want invites but haven't had the luck to be invited. These guys might be desperate enough to buy a key, and I think it's disgusting that Valve is trying to cash in on that. There's no problem with them inviting more people, it's not like Dota 2 is "flooded" by active players, unless their servers are already pushed to the limit, they should be pushing out more invites instead of selling them. |

You are not forced to pay. You can still sign up for a free beta invite, the playdota daily giveaway and other places. If you really want a beta you can geta on in a few hours searching. Else you could buy it off some sketchy site for about 2 dollar. Valve offered this as a beginner packet to people who want to support it. If you don't care that much about dota, just wait till it goes out of beta this summer.
To the person above me:
Valve already said that they currently dont have enough server capacity, thats why it is not totally open to the public yet.Last edit: 2012-06-14 16:47:04 |

They're pretty flooded, US West has been out for the whole day just so they could protein pump the server. |

I am not trying to "get in", I was just really surprised that I got this mail because I thought DotA 2 would be f2p, so I don't understand who would buy it. Thanks for clearing it up for me. And I agree with tobberoth, it is pretty disgusting they are trying to cash in on the fact that people are "desperate" |

Wtf is your problem?
Game will be free to play. If you don't want to wait then buy an invite or go looking for one. Who would buy it? Anyone that likes valve and supports their game instead of a company like riot that cashes in on evey single aspect of the game? |

It's a myth that you can get a dota 2 key in a "few hours". Since Valve stopped giving out steam gifts which each invite, it's not as common. Just look at the great TL trading thread, it's humongous and most people (me included) had to be in that list for months before we got a key. I have several friends who did the survey, only one got a key from it. I searched google to find keys, but it was either "giveaways" where a 5 keys were being given out to like 1000 people signing up, or dumb contests where 10 minutes after the contest was posted, 10 people had completed it.
Not saying it's impossible to get a key so you have to pay, but I'm sure there are tons of people who have signed up to many contests and give aways and done the survey on 5+ steam accounts and still haven't gotten it, they might very well feel "forced" to pay because they really want to play the game. |

Uh.. I took me 2 hours looking for a key and posting on reddit. If you only post in a semiactive forum like here yeah you have to wait. Try reddits sharedota2, playdota, etc.
It is a closed beta. Not an open beta. I'm not sure why you feel entitled for a free invite.Last edit: 2012-06-14 17:08:14 |

I actually did check sharedota2, it was the contest thing I was talking about. 3-4 contests posted a day, the keys won by people within 10 minutes of contest being posted. So instead of 2 hours of searching, we are talking autorefresh on a website for a whole day, together with a bit of luck.
EDIT: No one is feeling entitled. But it's supposed to be a free game and they are making money of invites to it, so there's literally NO problem in complaining. Having such a system is basically saying "yeah, we could invite more people, such as you. but we won't, because we want some money."Last edit: 2012-06-14 17:09:50 |

| playdota.com still has it's daily draw (180 keys each day), you just need an account there. They usually lower the min date every 1 month, so right now it's 05/27/2012 and before registered users. Next month will be 06/27/2012, etc |

| Many, many people have gotten free invites on TL, and even if you don't get a free one, you an always purchase one for way less than $40 on reddit (not suggesting this, but it's there if you're so "desperate") The $40 does give you about $25 worth of items, so it's not actually that bad - the pricetag is only there to control the rate of people getting the game. |

Valve is doing what Blizzard did with D3. Giving people a legitimate way to obtain items/keys through the company instead of through a 3rd party. This may sound evil, but it is actually much safer for the people who are going to buy keys anyway. Like 5s said, the price is there to throttle the amount of users coming in at a time. Honestly, if you are disgusted by what Valve is doing, charging for keys, you should stop supporting them.
You might not understand why people would buy a key for a game that is going to be f2p but for others, it makes sense to pay for a product to secure their chance at playing the game early. The price of time is different for everyone; for some it might justify paying $20 or $30 for 1 month early access and for others it might not be justifiable. I personally dont buy cosmetic items but that doesnt mean that I dont understand why people buy them. That would be pretty ignorant. |

fwiw i think its good that valve is selling keys. even if you wouldnt get anything else with it, you pay $30 for hours and hours of playtime. and iirc valve stated that the one factor that keeps the beta closed is the server capacity so its good to not let everyone in yet. |

If I had the money despite having a key already, I'd buy one. I appreciate everything Valve has done with Dota 2 and will not hesitate at throwing money at them.
At least I understand that Valve doesn't have enough servers to accommodate the hundreds of thousands or possibly millions that will make the switch once Valve opens Dota 2 to the public.Last edit: 2012-06-14 18:14:41 |

Me and Salv actually bought the 30€ beta invite... So what did we get? Cosmetic items and instant access. Our items and our game wont go anywhere once the game is released.
Basically we wanted in. And we both appreciate the stance that valve and dota2 is taking, with it being f2p with ALL heroes (unlike hon etc), and therefore I have no problems with giving them 30€ for a pretty good product IMO. (I'm an adult. I know how to handle money, so that much is nothing to me. I don't drink all my money)
Besides, I feel that as it is I've already gotten more than 30€ worth of fun from the game. Maybe I could have gotten in for free. I don't really care. I don't give a damn about cosmetics either. I can support a good cause. |

It is a good move by Valve. You either try to get your hands on an invite that most of the others have done, or you pay to get invited, or you wait until it goes ftp.
People that can't wait will buy the key and Valve can make some well deserved money, i see no problem here whatsoever. If you are not that eager then wait.
btw I am spending money in the cosmetic store just because Valve deserves money for this fantastic game. |
