A nation does not simply fuck with Uncle Sam without repercussions, even if it is "hate" by random forumers .
So Uncle Sam gets to do whatever he wants? You realize the US isn't even part of the UNCLOS agreement whose terms they're assisting their allies in "defending" right? Its simply everyone out for themselves.
That's the way the world works, however unfortunate it is, and it's always been that way. Right now, Uncle Sam rules land, sea, and air. |

For the foreseeable future. And we're not simply unbreakable because of our military prowess or economic/corporate dominance in the world, but the influence and power we have throughout most of the world, especially the developed world. China does not.Last edit: 2012-06-15 13:20:10 |

At least this topic actually involves the US.
Personally i welcome wrangling with communists. It's a time honored tradition! Sadly it's not quite as fun as with the Soviet Union since China and the US are too connected economically. |

I think you should be asking yourself if you're in denial over the rise of other nations. China actually does register now in terms of international influence, believe it or not. Have you kept up in any way at all? The US is in a weaker position right now because of reputation hits from Iraq and Afghanistan along with the flaccid economy. Along with that, divisive politics has hamstrung domestic progress and has made us quite a laughingstock. The fact remains that China could go to economic war with the US and win because of the debt they hold and the leverage it provides, but they won't because any kind of war between the two would be disastrous for the world.
On June 15 2012 13:22 dAPhREAk wrote: why does every political thread turn into a pro/con-US debate?
Because it inevitably goes to the double standards people have for the US compared with non-Western nations. In this case its basically China trying to be the one carrying the biggest stick in Asia while the US wants to keep their position as the one with the biggest stick.Last edit: 2012-06-15 13:44:16 |

Well, the people wants economic growth at any cost BUT if anyone starts to mess with China's sovereignty he should be prepared to have 1.4 billions pairs of feet kicking his ass pronto. The whole nation functions as a monolithic ass-kicker whenever foreign countries are involved. You can be sure that every piece of media ensures that it stays this way too...

I love how people are saying "china will win" just to jump on america-hate bandwagon.
Philippines want US military's help. They regret kicking US military base out of Philippines and this is the result. Another "asshole" nation claiming over a giant maritime territory with a bullshit boundary they created from their fickle of imagine, just because they can bully other small nations.
China is no better than USA. They want to assume the current position of USA. A bully taking out another bully to be the king of bully of the world, as usual.
BTW, every single Asian countries hate china's guts. The only nation that seems to be in terms of "friendly" is North Korea. If war breaks out, you can bet your ass all those Asian nations surrounding china would want to help out USA.Last edit: 2012-06-15 14:06:47 |

The situation is actually quite similar to that of the US vs European influence in Latin America in the early 20th century, hence why I mention double standards (and big stick diplomacy) for the hate bandwagons. Back then, everyone (being Europe and the US) wanted to exploit the region (like what they did to Africa) but it can be argued that US big stick diplomacy and subsequent regional influence was the lesser of two evils in that the US didn't quite go in and carve everything up. You can say every country in the region hates China, but I see quite a few groups from the region, especially South Koreans, making tons of money off China these days.
Its also rather ignorant and rude to label a whole nation as an "asshole" too, especially since both nations that you mention are "asshole" nations under your standards.Last edit: 2012-06-15 14:15:48 |

Economic partnership doesn't mean much when it comes to diplomatic relationships. Both South Korea and Japan has economic partnership with china. That does not mean both of their bilateral relationship is in good standing. The partnership revolves around money.
With china keep barking at both South Korea and Japan over maritime boundaries and island ownership (senkaku islands incident), there is no way both of these countries are in good term with china. They are actually sick of china's bully tantrum. The diplomatic relationship between china and Japan is actually in all time low as of this moment, even low compared to Junichiro Koizumi's era.
china's ego will further drive both South Korea and Japan's relationship with USA much stronger, which china very much opposes. This is only good news for USA. Now the very same thing is happening with Philippines-USA alliance.Last edit: 2012-06-15 14:24:10 |
