I'm posting this to see if people here on TL want to play a game of nomic on the forum. Don't know what Nomic is? Read below. Nomic is a game of democracy, and more importantly, voting. It starts off with a few preset rules:
Imutable Rules: + Show Spoiler +101. All players must always abide by all the rules then in effect, in the form in which they are then in effect.
102. Rules listed under the heading Mutable Rules are mutable. Other rules under the heading Immutable Rules are immutable.
103. A proposal may only describe any one of the following: (1) the repeal of a mutable rule (enacted by removing the rule from the ruleset). (2) the amendment of a mutable rule (enacted by modifying the rule's text as described in the proposal). (3) the transmutation of an immutable rule to a mutable rule, or vice-versa (enacted by moving the affected rule from the section of the ruleset it occupies to the end of the other section). (4) the creation of a new mutable rule (enacted by adding the new rule at the end of the mutable section of the rules). To indicate which one of these is to occur, a proposal's title must begin with one of the words REPEAL, AMEND, TRANSMUTE or CREATE.
104. A proposal is not enacted unless the rules dictate that it should be.
105. Every player is an eligible voter. Every eligible voter must cast a single vote with regard to every proposal.
106. A vote may only be one of the following options: (1) FOR. (2) AGAINST. (3) ABSTAIN.
107. No change to the rules may have retroactive application, nor may its stated effect be explicitly dependent on events before its enaction.
108. Each proposal shall be given a title for reference. The title shall be chosen by the proposer, and must not consist of 'CREATE' and an existant rule title. When a CREATE proposal is enacted, its title except for the first word becomes the title of the new rule, unless the proposal's description explicitly states otherwise.
109. If a mutable rule and immutable rule conflict, the immutable rule takes precedence, and the conflicting part of the mutable rule shall be void.
110. If a proposal has received fewer than two votes, the proposer may modify the proposal. If it had received any votes, the voter(s) may change their vote at any time before the final vote for the proposal is cast.
111. It must always be possible for the rules to be changed. Mutable Rules: + Show Spoiler +201. Turns are taken by players in alphabetical order by username.
202. A player may, on their turn, opt to pass. If they do so, it becomes the turn of the next player.
203. If a player has not made any action during 2 days of their being required by the rules to do so, they automatically pass any turns, and ABSTAIN in any votes.
204. If a player has not made any action during 7 days after their turn is skipped, they are no longer a player. Unlike forfeiting, they may rejoin the game under any rules permitting joining.
205. A turn consists of two parts, in this order: (1) making one proposal and having it voted on. (2) adding a number of points to their score, this number being calculated by adding 10 to the turn number, and multiplying by the fraction of FOR votes this turn's proposal received.
206. If 50% or more of the votes on a proposal, after all required votes on it are cast, are FOR votes, the proposal is enacted.
207. The first two sentences of this rule are removed at the end of two full cycles of turns. The following sentence has no effect. Any players who voted AGAINST an enacted proposal receives 10 points upon its enaction.
208. When a proposal is defeated (ie. is not enacted after all required votes are cast), its proposer loses 10 points.
209. Players may never cast more than one vote on a single proposal.
210. Votes may be cast whenever they are required. The player whose turn would occur soonest after that of the proposer and who has not yet voted is required to vote before any other player, at the other player's request. In Livejournal, votes on a proposal are made in the form of comments.
211. The first player to achieve 200 (positive) points wins.
212. If two rules in the same section of the ruleset conflict, whichever occurs first takes precedence, and the conflicting part of the later rule shall be void, unless the precedence is explicitly stated to be otherwise.
213. Any player may invoke Judgement, if they disagree with the legality of a turn, or application of a rule. The player whose turn it is becomes the Accused. The player whose turn precedes the Accused's becomes the Judge. The Judge decides how the dispute is to be resolved. The decision of the Judge may only be overruled if all players other than the Judge and the Accused agree that it should be before the next turn begins. If any other player agrees with the Judge's decision, the decision is implemented, the Judge and Accused lose those titles, and the game resumes as normal. The next player beginning their turn is an implicit agreement with the decision of the Judge. If the Judge is overruled, the player whose turn preceeds the Judge's becomes the Judge. If the Accused becomes the Judge, the role of Judge automatically passes again to the preceeding player.
214. If the rules are changed so that further play is impossible, or if the legality of an action cannot be determined with finality, or if by the Judge's best reasoning, not overruled, a move appears equally legal and illegal, then the first player unable to complete a turn wins.
Rules in the 100's are immutable, rules in their 200's are mutable, and new rules would be in their 300's. tl;dr: Initially you want to get 100 points through a random dice roll after each turn. However, normally within a few turns this rule is removed and it really starts to get batshit :D You still have to read the rules if you want to play Green is the modfont, so I won't be talking as "myself" Blue if you want to ask a question about the game ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Everyone is welcome to play, and it'd be cool if we could get a game started here on TL. What do you guys think? I'll put down a starting signup list to gauge interest, and if we fill it, then we can start the game off and see how it goes. I will host and keep an up to date rulelist on the 2nd post of the thread. I will also complete everyones dice roles on some kind of online dice or alternative. If you won't believe me when I reveal roles, then don't bother signing up in the first place, though it will likely not matter as the game goes on. Obviously, the game requires quite a lot of talking and thought, and so if people are gonna sign up they will need to be commited, if people wanna play type /I want to play and won't disappear after 3 hours/ anything else won't be counted.

Turns will work as such. Starts with alphabetical order. When your turn starts you have 8 hours from the beginning of your turn to propose a new rule. There is then an 8 hour voting and discussion period where people can vote on the rule. Voting is done in this format: Vote: For Vote: Against Vote: Abstain You cannot change your vote once you have voted. You may abstain. Once everyone has voted, the new rule will either come into effect or not, I will roll for you, and the next persons turn will begin. Current turn: iGrok
Proposed Rules: CREATE Ammending Immutable Rules+ Show Spoiler + Passed. CREATE "The Item Rule" + Show Spoiler + Passed CREATE After a rule is passed it requires one full round for it to take effect.+ Show Spoiler + Defeated Current Proposed Rule (gTank): Votes: gTank:
KharadBanar: Mouldyjeb: RoyGBiv_13: r.Evo: Zealos:
(All the above can be changed, and will be updated to reflect as such.)Last edit: 2012-07-06 06:14:42 |

If you want that to be a rule, you can make a vote for it.
In all serious though, its as fun as the players that play it. |

/in I played this with people in my school once, it went batshit crazy. We almost instantly repealed the scoring system and went on to include rules such as "The school is the playing field" and "If you jump out the window, you die."Last edit: 2012-06-14 21:50:04 |

Oh sorry lol. /I want to play and won't disappear after 3 hours./ :D
Maybe make that part bold or something, after reading all the rules it didn't look like there was something important in that part of the post |

Fair enough, considering what a nomic game usually turns into sooner or later. Nevertheless, I think everyone would be thankful for more formatting in the OP (maybe rule numbering so people can discuss them more easily?) because I know from experience the game can get really messy really quickly. Maybe you'll even get some more signups that way |

OP looks fine now, although I can't help comparing it to the TL Mafia OPs with their glorious formatting D:
I know that that is very much work though, I'm not demanding from you that you bring it up to Mafia standards :D
Edit: Spoilering the rules looks like an okay idea, just say somewhere that players must have read these before starting or someone won't...Last edit: 2012-06-15 02:07:26 |

This seems like it'd be a better game IRL (makes for more creative rules), but I'll play.

This sounds interesting. Some of the mafia crew should probably be interested in this.
Depending on start time I might sign up, but I don't want to commit right now. |

Considering the relative lack of interest, I've lowered the initial signup list to get the game started sooner. Should also help people keep track of the rules :DLast edit: 2012-06-19 23:58:04 |
