July is getting closer and this means that the biggest yearly sports event is about to start.
![[image loading]](http://www.letour.fr/2012/TDF/img/lacarte.jpg)
Last year, we saw Cadel Evans finally getting his Grand Tour win after so many failures due to weak teams and bad luck, Thor Hushovd defending his Yellow Jersey like champ, and winning 2 mountain stages, even he was considered as a sprinter, Voeckler trying to hold on his yellow for 10 day with huge help from Pierre Rolland, finally surrendered on Alpe d'Huez and barely missed out podium, Andy Schleck's crazy attack after he lost big time on the descent to Gap and Contador's crazy riding from 93km out and turning the whole race upside down.
Although the route is critisized by fans that having way too few mountain stages and way too many kilometres of time trialing but climbers will have to attack more often in order to have a chance winning this tour.
What You Need To Know + Show Spoiler + Thanks to Drolla from last years thread, he explained the jerseys and their importance perfectly
Yellow Jersey - Worn by the current leader of the race. Represents the General Time Classification
Green Jersey - Worn by the leader of the General Points Classification. Nearly always won by the sprinters.
Polka-Dot Jersey - The jersey affiliated with the Best Climber Classification. More commonly known as "The King of The Mountains." It is very rare though that the best climber actually wins this classification though.
White Jersey - For the Best Young Rider of the race. Basically the yellow jersey for 25 y.o. and younger. It is possible to win both the Yellow and White Jersey.
Stages + Show Spoiler +P Prologue Saturday 30 June Liège > Liège 6.4 km 1 Plain Sunday 1 July Liège > Seraing 198 km 2 Plain Monday 2 July Visé > Tournai 207.5 km 3 Medium mountains Tuesday 3 July Orchies > Boulogne-sur-Mer 197 km 4 Plain Wednesday 4 July Abbeville > Rouen 214.5 km 5 Plain Thursday 5 July Rouen > Saint-Quentin 196.5 km 6 Plain Friday 6 July Épernay > Metz 207.5 km 7 Medium mountains Saturday 7 July Tomblaine > La Planche des Belles Filles 199 km 8 Medium mountains Sunday 8 July Belfort > Porrentruy 157.5 km 9 Individual time-trial Monday 9 July Arc-et-Senans > Besançon 41.5 km 10 High Mountains Wednesday 11 July Mâcon > Bellegarde-sur-Valserine 194.5 km 11 High Mountains Thursday 12 July Albertville > La Toussuire - Les Sybelles 148 km 12 Medium mountains Friday 13 July Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne > Annonay Davézieux 226 km 13 Plain Saturday 14 July Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux > Le Cap d’Agde 217 km 14 High Mountains Sunday 15 July Limoux > Foix 191 km 15 Plain Monday 16 July Samatan > Pau 158.5 km 16 High Mountains Wednesday 18 July Pau > Bagnères-de-Luchon 197 km 17 High Mountains Thursday 19 July Bagnères-de-Luchon > Peyragudes 143.5 km 18 Plain Friday 20 July Blagnac > Brive-la-Gaillarde 222.5 km 19 Individual time-trial Saturday 21 July Bonneval > Chartres 53.5 km 20 Plain Sunday 22 July Rambouillet > Paris Champs-Élysées 120 km )
You can find all detailed profiles here: http://www.letour.fr/2012/TDF/COURSE/us/0/etape_par_etape.html http://www.steephill.tv/tour-de-france (There's some nice information as well)
This a huge preview I found, It's extremely long but I recommend to read it http://forum.cyclingnews.com/showthread.php?t=17592
Stages to watch: + Show Spoiler +Stage 3: ![[image loading]](http://www.grassyknolltv.com/2012/tour-de-france/resources/profiles/profile-03.jpg) As you can see the profile looks like the Ardennes Classics and mostly the monument Liege-Bastogne-Liege, last 35 kms can provide suprise attacks from contenders and people who might try to get the yellow jersey. Stage 7: ![[image loading]](http://www.grassyknolltv.com/2012/tour-de-france/resources/profiles/profile-07.jpg) First mountain top finish, although this stage lacks climbs to tire out riders and provoke attacks, fireworks should happen in this stage at the foot of the final climb. Stage 9: ![[image loading]](http://www.grassyknolltv.com/2012/tour-de-france/resources/profiles/profile-09.jpg) The second time trial, which will cause major shifts in the general classification, it's a hillyish time trial which may cause problems for time trial specialists. Stage 11: ![[image loading]](http://www.grassyknolltv.com/2012/tour-de-france/resources/profiles/profile-11.jpg) Probably the best stage in this years Tour de France. It's a short stage but constant climbing and descending will wreck the riders and the list of people who can win will become really small after this stage. Stage 16: ![[image loading]](http://www.grassyknolltv.com/2012/tour-de-france/resources/profiles/profile-16.jpg) Again, a tough stage, which features 2 HC climbs and 2 Cat 1 climbs and the finish is shortly after a rapid descent, good descenders can take advantage of this stage and put some time into their rivals. Stage 17: ![[image loading]](http://www.grassyknolltv.com/2012/tour-de-france/resources/profiles/profile-17.jpg) Final mountain stage before the decisive time trial, climbers will have to give it all to cause troubles for contenders, who can time trial better. Stage 19: ![[image loading]](http://www.grassyknolltv.com/2012/tour-de-france/resources/profiles/profile-19.jpg) Final time trial, which will decide the winner of Tour de France 2012, it's a long, flat route and the riders who conserved their energy can put huge times against rivals in this stage.
Contenders: + Show Spoiler +General Classification + Show Spoiler +Favorites:
Cadel Evans: He's the defending champ, he showed that he can handle big climbs in 3rd week, his time trial ability is one of the best in whole peloton, and he's more confident finally getting a Grand Tour win.
Bradley Wiggins: His form in this season is plain insane, he nearly won every time trial he rode this year and his team is the strongest team easily in this year. The presence of Cavendish might cause troubles for him though.
Alberto Contador:He's out due to his suspension from doping
Andy Schleck:He's out from a injury he suffered from Dauphine.
Denis Menchov: Multiple GT winner, great time trialist, he's surely one of the biggest contenders in this year.
Outsiders:
Europcar gang: Pierre Rolland and Thomas Voeckler will be there, trying to cause suprises. Rolland will probably the GC guy and Voeckler will hunt for stages but you may never know after that crazy performance from last year.
Samuel Sanchez: Last years king of the mountain, can climb and descent extremely well. He crashed in Dauphine but he was able to finish the race, still it can be difficult to find his form.
Vincenzo Nibali: Crazy descending abilities, good climber but he might have problems in time trials.
Frank Schleck: Abandoned Giro because of injuries, but it is likely that his team can be banned from Tour due to a doing investigation regarding Lance Armstrong and team manager Johan Bruynell
Jürgen Van Den Broeck: Last year he crashed out, still an enigma who can do major stuff in mountains.
Garmin boys: Garmin is well known for putting some guy in top 10 each year.
Tom Danielson will be the leader here but dont forget the Giro winner Ryder Hesjedal, Cristian Vande Velde and upcoming rider Dan Martin. It seems to be that their leader will be Hesjedal as he stated he's feeling great and fresh even after winning Giro, their team is one of the strongest team in this years Tour, they are likely to make a surprise here Green Jersey + Show Spoiler + Mark Cavendish: World Champion and last years winner of green jersey, probably the best sprinter right now. But he had a tough Giro which he barely lost the Points Jersey there and his team will surely focus on Wiggins and he wont have a sprint train like HTC days.
Peter Sagan: This dude is insane, winning stages left and right everywhere, even he won a prologue in Tour of Suisse. He can get points nearly in every stage and probably the main favorite for green jersey.
JJ Rojas: He fought really well last year, getting points from hilly stages where Cavendish cant score, this year he will try to win Green jersey again.
Thor Hushovd:Had his worst season of his career and wont be here in this years Tour.
Marcel Kittel/Andre Gripel/Tyler Farrar: Sprinters who might have a chance to get stage wins in this year but they are less likely to go for green jersey.
King of the Mountains + Show Spoiler + It can go to a lot of people but in my opinion main favorites are Thomas Voeckler, Chris Anker Sorensen and Dan Martin and Jelle Vanendert.

| I hope they don't just spend the entire race talking about Lance's charges, which they sort of did last year. The race is always the highlight of my summer as far as sport goes, and excited to see how Cadel Evans does. Unfortunately Andy Schleck isn't competing this year it appears |

I guess you are watching Liggett and Sherwen commentary, these guys are really horrible. When Contador destroying everyone in 2009 TDF in Verbier, they were like "Thats a great ride by Armstrong, he's a legend!!!!!!!!!!" or when Lance beats Contador in prologue like 5 seconds "That's a huge blow to Contador!!!!!!!!!!! he's going to be devastated!!!!!!!!!!" |

lol here is the opposite. Portuguese commentator do a reasonable job hidding their bias but you can tell (and one of them actually admitted to it) that they really contador. In the incident with Andy and his bike's (chain?! sorry never talked about cycling in english before T_T dont know how to name that part) they were all OMG CONTADOR COMPLETELY DEMOLISHING Andy S.! Final time trial comes and he wins omg no doubt the best omg omg omg. When things could go absolutely the other way had he showed some fair play (or had the chain not broke or whatever happened to Andy). Still Im nitpicking, our commentators do a fantastic job apart that slight bias and actually made a lot of people in Portugal watch cycling (besides those who actually do or that already watched) due to fun and also insightfull commentaries all year long.
If RS and the brothers are out this is going to be a strange Tour. Its going to come down to how well Menchov feels and if Cadel is strong. Either way, my vote goes to BWiggins and that powerhouse of a team that is Sky. |

They actually suspended other riders before for even less, so it would be silly to let Contador off just because he is a known rider. |

Riis is a confessed doper himself so It is not unexpected to him defend dopers lol
But UCI is really horrible imo. (Random chinese races entering World Tour, way too few races that count points for teams, some lame stage races worth more than a monument etc)

Everyone cheats in Cycling. Armstrong doped, Ullrich doped, Sastre doped, Evans, Schleck... EVERYONE. Its physically impossible to win without! This sport is a joke, because its all about not get caught. This sport was great until they decided to try to get this sport clean. Before that everyone used EPO or something like that and it was fair.
No matter what. Contador is by far the best cyclist of this generation and everyone knows. |

I didnt hear any rumors about Sastre and Evans, they are pretty clear imo. Schlecks are working with Bruynell, who knows whats going on considering his crazy reputation with Armstrong and USPS. And virtually everybody doped in 90's lol |

No Contador and no A. Schleck really take some of the excitement out for me ...regardless it should be good but if I had to pick anyone, maybe Cadel again or Wiggins. Sanchez looks like a good underdog/surprise pick too.
Tony Martin on same team as Levi now? Nice. Haven't really kept up with cycling this season up until now but a pleasant surpise as I am rooting for my homestate guy Levi (although he has a tough challenge if he wants to win).
As for the sprint stages, I am excited also. Can Cavendish do it like in the HTC days with some different guys? With Cavendish and Wiggins( a contender) on the same team, it will be interesting to see what strategy they take on certain days too.
Also excited for Peter Sagan. Saw that guy up close when he came to Tour of Cali 2011, when he was still a relatively young guy breaking-out and he is beastly! Huge, strong legs.

Cav wont have a sprint train like HTC days, he said going for green is too hard for him he'll probably try to win stages like Robbie Mcewen and likely wont finish the race |

Ah, makes sense considering how much he relied on his teammates in HTC days. OFC no big surprise he prob won't finish the race though Seems like they would want their guys focusing on helping Wiggins (if in contention) instead of helping Cavendish to just get up the hill to finish. |
