I believe no one has posted this yet here, 3 are dead and 1 in "as bad as it gets" critical condition after what appears to be an armoured car robbery by an employee, who killed his own co-workers.
This occurred late last night at HUB Mall on the University of Alberta campus, the mall triples as a residence, food court and shopping mall. As a student at the UofA I am impressed with how they handled the situation. Even though i'm not enrolled in summer classes I still recieved a text message from them informing me to stay away from HUB and that it will be closed, etc. They live posted on their homepage http://ualberta.ca/ in both english and what I assume is mandarin,(?) and more which is detailed in the articles I post below.
"Two men and a woman died and a fourth victim, a man, is in hospital, city police Staff Sgt. Erik Johnson said early Friday. Police continue to look for a suspect or suspects after receiving reports around midnight of gunshots at HUB, a combined residence and shopping mall that runs the length of several blocks along 112th Street.
It’s arguably the deadliest armoured car incident in Alberta history.
Heres an initial story, without suspect: http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/University+Alberta+shooting+leaves+three+dead+after+attempted+armoured+robbery+with+video+photos/6787968/story.html

Condolences to all those involved
UPDATE: Thanks to Enzymatic for the info, i was being lazy
Haven't seen this updated this yet, but the U.S border officials caught & apprehended the guy trying to cross into the U.S border at one of the Washington State border crossings, I read in the paper this morning that the Chief U.S Border patrol officer (forgot his exact title), said when they caught him he had just over $330 000 stashed in a backpack. Important to note, he also had no passport while trying to cross the border.

| Very sad, I am interested to see how long it will take to locate the missing guard. Hopefully the injured victim will survive and be able to tell us what happened. |

Sad. And the killer did it for a couple of bags of cash. Wow. I am a bit awe-struck really.

As an armored car can carry anywhere from thousands to millions of dollars worth of valuables or hard currency it would do to not trivialize the draw such a sum would have on robbers. That being said; tragic.Last edit: 2012-06-16 05:57:00 |

| Well, I can assume that since the dead and injured were inside a bank, he likely only got away with the cash from the tasking they were on, probably not the whole truck. however, he could have (if he had help and time) used his key to get into the truck and loot it as well. Wow. Still. Taking 3 lives, for what... a million? In Canada? he aint getting out oif the country, and that neck of the woods is RCMP territory. Sickening. Last edit: 2012-06-16 06:06:48 |

A lot of people are alarmed that many of us did not get any emergency texts or emails sent to us. They always made a big kerfuffle about signing up for them.
Edmonton's had a lot of global news these last few weeks . Everyone I know is well aware of what the suspect looks like. It shouldn't be long before they find him.

I'm a grad student at the UofA and a resident of HUB.
The shootings took place shortly after midnight, though at the time I was talking to a friend on skype and didn't hear a thing. I guess that's a testament to the effectiveness of my headset. Around 2 AM the police started knocking on everyone's doors to take witness statements.
The officer who came to my door was heavily tattooed and wearing shorts so at first I was wondering if he was legit or not. I asked him for his ID before I gave him mine. He gave me this look that said "Seriously, dude?" before pointing to his badge on his body armor (which is definitely not worn unless the situation calls for it) as well as to his gun at his hip.
After that, being the dedicated grad student that I am (translation: couldn't sleep anyway) I left to go to my lab to start a lengthy experiment. On the way I poked my nose at the mall level of HUB (the residence has a built-in mall) where the banking machines (and the robbery) took place. I barely got a glance at the scene before two cops asked me what the hell I was doing and told me to gtfo. I didn't think I would get far but I wanted to at least get a look at the situation. Curiosity.
I started my experiment in the lab and during a lull decided to walk back to get my laptop or a book from home. Only at this point was I told I couldn't reenter (by a cop who was the spitting image of Robert Duvall) so I've been a refugee on campus ever since.
Some people have criticized the university for it's allegedly slow response, but I think these claims are without substance. Police arrived on scene pretty quickly and secured the area immediately upon arrival. The only thing the university could have done would have been to sound the fire alarm to get everyone out after the first reports of gunfire, and that would have just caused mass panic. Hundreds of people fleeing a building in the dead of night makes for easy targets to a deranged gunman, after all.
I'm not rattled by this event but I am saddened that this kind of thing has actually happened in Canada, though admittedly Alberta is Canada's Texas. We'd hear about homicides and gang shootings from elsewhere in the world but it just didn't happen here. |

Kinda disturbing, imo.

Dude screams mentally sane to me. It also kind of bothers me, that status is a pretty resounding cry for help to me. If one of his friends or family reached out to him three people could still be here. |

| As a former armored truck driver for Brinks, sadly the robberies are almost always inside jobs. It made the job quite scary having to think about that while at work. |

Hope they shoot the guy. Nothing would please me more then for the security company to figure out who it was before the police and track him down and put 4 rounds into his head.

I never understand people like you.
You're just as mentally dangerous and unstable in my mind as the guy who did this. I shouldn't even have to explain why. If you can't see it, you never will. How the fuck anyone can think this is a logical, civilized, fair, and even safe way to approach anything is beyond me.
That isn't justice, it's revenge and emotional knee-jerk reaction and only perpetuates more needless violence and shooting.
How about we fucking capture him and go through the works of the judicial system instead of your wild west justice shit.
EDIT: Condolences to families of the victims and I hope police get him soon or he turns himself in. Glad the situation was handled in an apparently decent way. Hope no one else gets hurt.Last edit: 2012-06-16 13:07:18 |

His viewpoint is unfortunately quite common, and It is easy enough to understand: bloodlust justified by revenge. You explain it yourself. We may live in "civilized" socities, but baser urges lurk just beneath the surface.
A common justification for the "hang 'em all" approach is that it is more cost effective than due process and a potentially lengthy prison confinement should the suspect be found guilty at the end of it. |

We all have these urges, hell my first thought was I'd shoot this guy dead, but hey we are all held in reason by....ummm reason. But hey Reason is what makes our society sustainable. |

Because we live in Canada. The guy that did this will, at best get 4 life sentences with no chance of parole and most likly get 4 life sentences and be out on parole in 20ish years. That is not justice. Do you think the families of the victims will get any closure with a sentence like that? Do ou think the victims coworkers will feel the right thing has been done?
I fully support the death penalty and in every place that has one 4 counts of 1st degree murder and armed robbery will get you executed. |
