18 pigeons vs plane is usually imba in favor of the pigeons, but she outplayed them. |

Asians will never fail to unite and close ranks? Haha what are you talking about? All those countries over there hate each other lol! And the Japanese in particular since their culture is godawfully supremacist and arrogant.
the internet, where morons are allowed an opinion.
I wanted to say something rude back at him but since this is a westerner's website I thought I'd show some courtesy and restraint to the locals
Someone just needs to mention that if the Japanese are ever imperialist or arrogant, it's because they basically copied the Chinese on that train of thought and how ironic it is that it has actually been done reactively in order to distance themselves from China's influence.
Then another smug comment about USA, nukes, WW2.
Bam, 20 page nation bashing ego fest. |

Since we are celebrating a woman going to space. How about the safe return of nobody from the US today.
LOS ANGELES — An unmanned Air Force space plane steered itself to a landing early Saturday at a California military base, capping a 15-month clandestine mission.
The spacecraft, which was launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida in March 2011, conducted in-orbit experiments during the mission, officials said. It was the second such autonomous landing at the Vandenberg Air Force Base, 130 miles northwest of Los Angeles. In 2010, an identical unmanned spacecraft returned to Earth after seven months and 91 million miles in orbit.

| Yup! Nobody was injured and last I checked it would take 40 minutes for them to let the astronauts out. They probably already have done so. When the craft landed though, it actually hit the ground, bounced, and rolled I think. That was pretty scary. |

I missed the actual landing but saw the extraction of the taikonauts (lol). All 3 seemed fine wobbly legs but thats to be expected. |

Shouldn't the title be "China's First Woman Astronaut"?
She's definitely not the first woman in space by a LONG shot. Valetina Tereshkova was the first woman in space and she was a cosmonaut... I kind of dislike that astronaut has become a generic term in common lexicon. I mean, Russian space travelers are cosmonauts, and american space travelers are astronauts... shouldn't there be a generic term as well as specific terms country by country? I mean, going to space is a seriously special occasion, they should ge their own words for "space traveler" too, right?

Yeah don't worry--it was just a small typo; OP forgot the apostrophe-s but it was meant to be there :>Last edit: 2012-06-29 13:00:50 |

And it's such a stupid term, too. I've never heard anyone use the phrase 太空人 or 太空员 to refer to an astronaut。The most common word I hear for astronaut is 宇航员。I mean I understand why the phrase exists, I just don't like it. Apparently the English version of Xinhua uses "taikonaut," though, so it's official.
I still don't see why they just can't be called astronauts :/Last edit: 2012-06-29 17:17:32 |

Because then Yang Li Wei wouldn't have been the first "taikonaut" into space, he would've just been one of dozens of "astronauts" and "cosmonauts". Liu Yang also wouldn't have been the first female "taikonaut" in space. It's this psychological thing to do with national pride.
That's how i see it at least. |

Not just national pride, it has real cultural significance! Why not just make an arbitrary word to celebrate another of man kind reaching toward the relatively untouched frontier of space?
Also, calling them astronauts also has a strong connotation of slow success and precision... as opposed to calling them cosmonauts, which has a strong connotation of quickly advancing frontiers and impacted spinal cord injuries...
Some people may have forgotten that cosmonauts did just about everything faster than astronauts did. Except that moon thingy of course.
Random nitpicky things aside, Awww yeah, First Woman Taikonaut in SPACE! :DDD |
