Good day fellow SC2 players,
Every once in a while my nephew of age 8 comes over and he loves to play video games on my PC. I have loads of games on Steam but he shows interest for strategy games or unit control games for that matter.
I would like to dedicate this thread to list maps that would be entirely suited for children of ages 7 and up.
Could you please list the map names of maps on battle.net that would be suitable for kids with a short description and the server it is hosted on, also the exact name to type in the search function?
Right now I can only think of Starjeweled but I feel that one is even a bit hard for a young mind to grasp. Next time my nephew visits I would like to have him play a fun custom game that is easy to learn and pick up.
Can you guys help me out? Thank you in advance.
*edit; MOD could you please move this to custom maps? this is clearly a custom map section thread I see that now. thanks.Last edit: 2012-06-21 00:33:22 |

I'm not sure how much of a gamer your nephew is already, but you could let him try playing the Campaign on Casual Difficulty (or even Normal Difficulty depending on his familiarity with games). While it is not quite playing SC2 against other people, I think most of us learned playing strategy games through the campaign.
If you want purely unit control and he's familiar with RTS controls, I would suggest letting him try his hand at some of the Challenge maps, the Starcraft 2 Master maps or any Micro tournament map (although playing against other players can be daunting).
If these don't appeal, I can suggest:
Photon Cycles: TRON, but in SC2. Tower Defence: Build defensive structures and don't let bad guys pass. |

| Why not let him play the campaign and/or vs computer on easy? |

I think any younger kid would love TD games. I know I did when I first played them on FT

| Unit tester? I'm sure he'd get a kick out of mashing massive armies into each other. |

Get the nostalgia running in his veins while he is still young. When I was around 9 or 10 I begged my parents to buy a CD-Rom drive so I could play warcraft 2. Its a bit simpler to learn and you can play it with just the mouse at first.
photon cycles was mentioned but i might also mention photon discs, a lot of fun, but more FPS-y and quick to learn.Last edit: 2012-06-21 05:38:27 |

| You know what's really weird and fucked up. He is in the hospital right now with a heavy concussion... This is totally not related but it's strange, making a topic for your nephew and him ending up hurt a short time after that. When he recovers I'll force him to play SC2 for hours. Hell yeah! |

On this same note "Darglein's micro trainer" has a lot of "scenario's" that scale with difficulty without having to play vs other people.
However the starting difficulty may be a bit high on some of them. |

Pick a small map with good aesthetics, and simple pathing.. and small chockes, i remember when i was 13 playing the original starcraft. What you want is a fortress like base with overpowerd chockes, and good looking map, that gives memories. Because the pathing is simple, and the chockes overpowerd.. he wont be doomed on attack 1 and 2, and wont loose patience and instead build a solid endgame base.Last edit: 2012-06-21 07:00:58 |

| Probably give them a mod or a DoTA type game. The idea is that the map is very simple, but the gameplay and Micro is fairly intense, but I guess the epitome of that is LoL where is all 1 unit control. |

Novice Steppes of War I think fits this mold rather well. |

If he can't understand Star Jeweled he must be very very young. I made a fun map where you don't have many minerals and there are rocks in the middle to prevent rushes. The goal is to make fun strats. It's on the European server, it's called Bounty Beach Winter.
edit : maybe you can try Star Striker, the football gameLast edit: 2012-06-21 14:30:52 |

| Bomberbot could certainly be entertaining to your nephew as well. It's like the old bomberman series. And I'm pretty sure he can play against both AI and players. |
