Hi guys,
I registered for my first tournament (TSL4 Qualifier #4), and I had to forfeit the match. There are a few causes for it, and I just thought I'd pass them along in hopes that it will be addressed or thought about. I'm not mad, I figured I'd probably lose anyway, but it did spoil the fun !
First, the checkin period. The times for EU/NA tournaments are all listed in KST; the problem of course is, that KST is *ahead* of us and thusly lists "Thursday" as the start of the tournament. So the tournament was supposed to start June 20, Wednesday, at 11am Eastern Time (my time zone), but at a glance I second guessed myself and thought it was Thursday. This could be fixed by simply putting a few timezones in place; it could say: Tournament Begins: June 21st 12:15KST || June 20th 11:15am EST || June 20th 16:15 GMT or whatever. I think that this makes the tournament easier to remember for people checking in across the globe; as it surely led to my mistake in thinking it was Thursday and thus not being able to attend.
Secondly, at least for NA/EU tournaments; I think that in the spirit of keeping it more appealing to a broader audience (myself included) is to have qualifiers on weekends. I understand that the time zone differences can make playing "evening" matches in a difficult spot, since the evening in NYC (where I am) versus the UK makes it quite unreasonable for people. However, the way the tournament is set up currently in the middle of the week, it lends itself for only pros to play, and people who are unemployed or children. It greatly defeats the purpose of having a broad audience engage in this, and as a guy who had three kids and works all week, it would be nice to be able to at least try to participate on a weekend.
Lastly, the "Info" on almost all the tournaments is wrong. For the Jun 20th tourny, it lists in the details that: - Tournament registration will open on June 6, 2012 1000 EDT[local]. - Tournament check-in will open on June 13, 2012 1000 EDT.
Obviously, those dates have passed. Simplifying and codifying the rules into a central location for all TSL tournaments would be easier so they are centrally linked (and a copy paste will not result in error), and having less verbiage to the actual tournament specifics I think, makes it a little easier to swallow. I know a lot of folks are pros at this but for somebody like me, it's rather a bit of information overload.
Some other notes here that would be great, like email reminders with 24 hour notice of the tournament, a countdown clock that is localized to the user for each tournament with the PROPER time for the start of tournament (again, localized!). Having a little bit better reporting mechanism for "No-Show" instead of messaging an admin would probably be good too; I'm in IRC now, with a flood of users saying "My opponent didn't show!" It's really not clear, and there might be an easier way to instead of messaging an admin, to put in the "My Matches" section a "Opponent No-Show" and then an admin would be flagged to each problem rather than having to deal with so much overlap.
That's about it, I'm sure people have many ideas but my biggest things are accessibility (weekends!) and just getting localized time so people like me don't make silly simple mistakes.
Thanks! |

Have you set your timezone in your profile? That would solve the time issues.
They didn't do it on weekends because there are so many tournaments already on weekends that it would be hard for a lot of people to participate. By people I mean pro players, who they are trying to cater to.Last edit: 2012-06-21 01:11:35 |

If you haven't already and you're new to tournaments, check out the playhem ones. They run daily tournaments both for specific league and a $75 open tournament on both EU and NA.Last edit: 2012-06-21 01:29:23 |
