South Korea Themed Party?

Hi TL

I'm hosting a country themed party soon and I want to do a S.Korea and possibly a combined S.Korea + Japan party. I need party ideas (drinks, music, decoration? ) type of things. Its going to be all 20~30yr olds (grad students), and given we are students, keep the suggestions relatively affordable. I think alcohol and music are the primary concerns but if you have any cool ideas, I'm all ears. Also, I'm in Ohio, so... don't suggest things that I can only get from Korea or have to ridiculous amounts for. I'm serving a lot of people, so again, keep it within a graduate student's budget.

thanks, cheers

Serve Jinro brand soju and pickles.

Here is a good music resource: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=98009

Don't do SouthKorea+Japan combined party. Just do one or the other. Or just call it "East Asian" Party.

With that being sad, fuckload of soju.

Where in Ohio are you located? It gets little pricey, but Korean BBQ also works.

Soju, kimchi/rice, korean barbecue (bulgogi+galbi) are good introductory dishes. For a meal approach, bibimbap is a tasty mixture of rice/veggies/beef+egg, easy to prepare too. With the soju, get the hand-sized bottles rather than the larger ones. Asian supermarket has everything suggested.

I would avoid k-pop unless you guys are into that, or want to enjoy it ironically as if you were Korean. Perhaps include some BW/SC2 VODs/streams playing on your TV? (connect to laptop)

Kimchi is bad for people that's not used to it.

its Kimbab/Kimbap ^_^ but those are good things to have another thing you could do and its a bit strange, but if you come here you can never avoid it, but corn on pizza, I know it sounds off, but it does grow on you after the first month or so of having it.

In my honest opinion don't play korean music unless everyone already listens to it and likes it. I have tried to introduce MANY people to korean music and it is never successful. most people literally call me a faggot/gay/homo etc. There are some korean groups that have songs in english but i still wouldn't recommend that tbh

kimbap/bibimbop and things take alot of preperation and are nasty unless u do it right. i'd say some bulgogi or kalbi are good because you don't need to buy the highest quality meat and all you do is marinate the beef and put it on a pan/skillet. there should be an asian market somewhere that u can get the sauce and also u can find shrimp/onion chips.(most popular chips in korea) and potentially some other snack foods. i like milkis alot. (milk flavored soda but everyone i have made try it guess grapefruit or orange or tropical fruits when i ask them what they think the flavor is)

if anyone drinks wine i personally love a korean wine called myungjak bokbunja. myungjak is the brand or type of wine(kinda like charodonay or merlot I THINK don't quote me) and bokbunja means black raspberries. it is a really sweet really good wine and it's 4.99 a bottle where i live. any kind of soju you buy is gonna be god awful unless you have had it and have liked it in the past so just buy the cheapest stuff. i really like SeJu which is flavored soju (tastes like rice wine) but the only place i have found it is at a korean restaurant and it's very expensive.

i really hope this helps, GL HF

I would be embarrassed to invite anyone to this type of party, let alone attend one. I'm not trying to be a dick, but this is too weird for most people. What is wrong with a normal type of party lol? If I ever did this my friends would just laugh at me and frankly I wouldn't blame them. To each his own I suppose.

you see, every year, our department has this "around the world party", where everyone goes to 4 different parties with country themes sequentially for 1 hour each and finishes at the last party.

thus, no food is necessary. I'm only concerned with alcohol. And I wasn't planning on playing kpop or jpop music, thats why I'm asking you guys if there are alternatives to that.

well, you could just use songs with korean/japanese lyrics, it doesn't have to be J or K-Pop.
If you only host ppl for an hour, just make a <1hour playlist, and you have the perfect setting

I've done something similar and I can say the best possible dishes/food to serve at these parties are definitely more of the Korean Street food rather than traditional food that better represents Korean cuisine. I say this because people love snack food, and fried food.

Some of the food items could be fried sweet potato/eggs/kimbap/etc that is served with some soy sauce on the side for people to dip and eat. The fried stuff is definitely the pinnacle of korean street cuisine, and Americans love them.

Another dish could be JapChae which is like stir-fry noodles mixed with vegetables and meat and you can also make things like Bulgogi and rice which is probably the easiest thing to make out of all of these dishes.

For drinks, you can buy ShikHae which is a korean rice drink and just Aloe juice which is really popular among the Americans where I live. Good Luck!

pocari sweat is basically soda.

if you want japanese beverages go for teas (oolong, green and jasmine), a sweeter option would be sweet teas (kirin royal milk tea) or soda (Calpis (most popular and many flavors), Pocari Sweat, CC Lemon) and if you want alcohol go for sake (warm is better than cold) or umeshu (plum wine).

as for music, if you dont want j-pop/k-pop, go for ballad type music (i am sure the jpop/kpop threads can help you). do not go for traditional music, you will likely not be impressed.

if you want cheap decorations, go for paper lanterns.

isn't pocari sweat a sports drink?

its basically Squirt, but a milder flavor. they market it as a sports drink, but its sold with the rest of the sodas at super markets / 7-elevens in Japan.
