How to setup macbook pro to lcd tv

okay i got a problem i have a
macbook pro 2.4ghz intel core 2 duo
and basically i am trying to setup my macbook to a samsung lcd tv.
i have the mini display port HDMI adapter and hook it up to my tv but my tv says no signal. i tried also going to system preferences/displays but it also doesnt show that the MDP is plugged in?
if anyone could help it would be appreciated
