Summary: In upstate NY, there was this 68-year old bus monitor that was bullied by a bunch of high school kids. The kids made fun of her for age, job, weight, etc. The video went viral, and people have donated over $200,000 dollars for her(she only makes about $15,000)
My thoughts: This kind of thing really makes me pissed off. I have a grandmother of similar age, and she raised me. She is probably the person that I love most in the world, and I could not imagine this kind of thing happening to her. I mean, the kids continued to yell profanities at her even though she was crying! WTF
I have lived in the US and Korea, and I have sometimes complained about how elders are treated with so much respect in Korea, but this makes me glad that there is such a social norm in Korea. This also showed me that bullying exists not just in school, but in all ages and jobs.
I really wanted to share this story really because of how bad I felt for the woman. I mean, some people who would stand up and try to punish some of the kids, but some people just can't. I don't think we can blame the woman for not taking a stand as a bus monitor, because she just doesn't have that personality. In fact, I actually respect her restraint in this situation. And don't blame her for having this job. The economy sucks and I doubt there are many places that would want to hire a 68-year old woman.
What are your thoughts about this and about how the world treats elders?
Here's the full video
Here's an interview with her
EDIT: Wow, I just watched the full video because I just couldn't get through it last time and stopped at like the 5min mark. I literally came to tears for the woman because no one should have to deal with that abuse. A part of me really wanted to kill these kids, but I know this is just a quick reaction and I'm sure I'll feel different later. I just hope these kids get the right kind of punishment, and I think the woman should get the money to retire. In the interview she said it happened many times before and that this was not an isolated incident.
And some of u are saying that u would deal with the abuse for the money, but she didn't have a choice. I would burn myself with McDonald's coffe for millions of dollars, but this is a choice. The people that deal with this don't have a choice. And u can most definitely sue for this type of verbal abuse, stating that u need payments for therapy and time off work.
This is terrible. The kids should get some kind of punishment

Just because they are children doesn't excuse them from anything. If they are old enough to think for themselves, they are old enough to be responsible for their actions. If these kids think its cool to bully others, then there is something rotten within these kids. You won't see this kind of behavior in most other countries, especially in Eastern Asian ones like Confuscian-influenced societies.
They do know better and they deserve punishment for it.

Perhaps bus monitors need some disciplinary authority so that they don't have to just sit there and take it.
i was driving down the road this november eve and spotted a hitchiker walking down the street. i pulled over and saw that it was only a tree. i uprooted it and put it in my trunk. do trees like marshmallow peeps? cause that's all i have and will have.

Something we will never truly be able to avoid. The natural instinct for a pack of males is to prey on those weaker. I just wish we had a corporal punishment system like in starship troopers. 1 offense you get whipped. 2 offense you get whipped 10 times. 3rd is death. Those kids deserved to get whipped.

Wow I didn't know this got so big. This was my old high school. And I was surprised when the first time I saw it was a facebook post from one of my friends from university, not even from my high school.

People have always been like that, all throughout history. Race, age, gender doesn't matter in this case. Don't be ridiculous.

I love my grandmother to a degree where I'd happily get my ass kicked to prevent anyone from potentially bullying her. I'm highly disappointed about the current morals in the U.S. society nowadays. I mean, wow, holy shit, how could anyone possibly make fun of an elderly woman or man >:/

20-30 years ago those kids prolly would have gotten the back side of somebodies hand. It's 2012 tho and there are far too many stupid laws.
