The second edition of The International is without any doubt marked by the strong presence of Chinese teams as almost a third of the participants come from The Middle Kingdom. In today’s interview, we take an interest in one of these teams as we sat down with one of the most versatile and decorated players in DotA, Zhou ‘KingJ’ Yang from EHOME. He will take time today to discuss the biggest and most important event of the year, the growth of Valve’s baby in China, his thoughts about Westerns teams and much, much more.
I would like to take the time to talk about your early career in DotA before discussing Dota 2. We can deduce that the start of your glory started in 2009 when you won SMM with FTD. The team was created shortly before the tournament. How did you end up playing for 2009’s team?
I accepted 2009 and ZSMJ’s invite only 15 days before the SMM tournament starts. We had a long break after the final victory. During that vacation, I made the decision of leaving FTD.
A couple of months after your success in SMM, the community was shocked to read the news about you leaving the team. What was the reason behind your departure?
All team members in EHOME are actually good friends, we know each other very well because I know them since the beginning of my Dota career. We had a conversation during the break, and we committed the decision together, peacefully.
You then decided to join EHOME and this was probably the best decision you took in your DotA career as the team has won almost all tournaments they competed in. In a few words, how would you summarize your stay in EHOME in 2010 and what adjectives would you use to qualify this team?
Hard working, trust, a competitive heart, support from family.

Ehome actually treated its players like shit, below average pay, awful conditions etc. 71, the manager is a known scumbag in the scene and demanded significant amounts of international winnings from the players (and withheld crystal's wages when he choose not to). You'll remember a part of the agreement at the international that the money be given directly to the players, that's why. What Ehome did have is the longstanding name, team cohension and stability in a time where there was relatively little money in the scene, and excellent coaching staff. All of which were obsolete by late 2010, which is one of the main reasons Burning and KingJ left. The new Ehome is under the same ownership and generally disliked, but u can't argue with a team thats all but guaranteed an invite, even if 71 docks 10% of the winnings ~_~ |

Hard to say, at this point, the scene is developed enough that a nice salary + housing + facilities is standard for all the teams, so there's not a whole lot of difference in that aspect, its mostly due to stability and team atmosphere.
In theory, iG has the most money and treats its players the best (lol pension plans), but historically that has actually shown to reduce motivation and increase complacency as the team just plays like 5 (extremely high skilled) pubs. They did go through a period of reformation over the last couple of weeks (after a team crisis and prep for TI2 I'd imagine) and went 5-0 against LGD over the last 2 days with extremely strong and cohesive play and is set to face DK in the finals, in which we'll see if the team (undoubtedly the most talented team in the world) can live up to its potential
LGD and Tongfu are both fairly hands-off established teams provided by food companies, so they pretty much run themselves and the players are generally quite content and effective with good conditions.
DK also runs itself, but its much more dependent on how the egos and motivations of the players are kept in check, in a lot of ways everybody (cept burning lol) acts a lot like Na'Vi in that they slack a lot of the time (gfs and other games and what not) and only really go into hardcore mode for lans.
WE in theory has the best coaching with multiple esports groups, and with 820 + 2009 on the payroll as at least part-time coaches, so they're generally innovative and play quite exciting DotA. However, they pretty much play like fantasy in that a lot of their ques come from the coaches, which leads to hilarious exchanges like this during a final. Commentators to 2009: so what did u tell WE between the games? 2009: well i encouraged them and i suggested that they pick A, B, and C if they fell their standard play is weaker than DK (WE picks A, B, and C) Commentators: ok so what's the plan? 2009: well they should pick 2 supports out of [insert 4-5 heroes here] and i think it should be obvious how to proceed given the first 3 picks (WE picks something completely different and plays in an awful way) Everybody facepalms

I actually do agree with your post but not with the WE/2009 part. I "often" talk with 2009 and he is not really a coach for WE but more like a talents seeker. He rarely coaches the team since he feels himself "not good enough" in Dota 2. And as far as I know, 820 is not in WE anymore, he is a full-time commentator but I might be wrong on this one.
