+ Show Spoiler +None of Nadal's usual antics worked, including that bump he gave Rosol as they crossed each other. |

| 11 foot faults for Karlovic... lol. Either he's that bad, or the officials were giving Murray a helping hand. Would love to see the replay of those calls. |

That's really uncharacteristic of Karlovic, and Murray really dodged a bullet there. Murray's poised to make a run to the Finals + Show Spoiler + ...but I wouldn't put it past him to choke in the quarters or semis in a major AGAIN. |

| Wait what the hell? Since when are threads ABOUT sporting events full of spoiler tags? This never happens in the mma/boxing/NFL/football/NBA/golf threads. Why tennis?? Great game from the 100th seed person, was a truly exceptional and exciting final set to watch after the football had finished. |

The broadcast I was watching on ESPN neglected to show the replay for many, if not all of the foot faults even the one in the 2-2 tiebreak. They just show the line judge sitting there for each call with a serious face. |

Rosol was just in the zone, attacking tennis at its finest; when an attacking player is on his game like that, there's very little you can do about it. I'm secretly happy about Nadal's loss so his slam count can remain low keke. And wow, Nadal is such a polarizing player on TL/online apparently (most people I know personally don't have a particularly strong opinion about him), people either think he's a stupid one-dimensional monkey player who only relies on gamesmanship to win or think he's an extremely talented super fantastic awesome tennis player. Maybe it's the Internet anonymity allowing people to let loose.
Personally I don't care much for him but you have to admit that he's an extremely good sport and generally a very nice person--extremely humble. His idiosyncrasies can be forgiven imho. He's really a good guy despite whatever things for which one might fault him on the court.
Damn Federer must wish so much to be on Nadal's side of the draw. If he can get to and get past Djokovic in the semis (presumably) he could have a huge shot at taking the whole thing especially judging by how consistently he performs against lower-ranked players. If he can win wimby this year, not only will it add to his godly total, it could REALLY help to propel him to No. 1 once again (though he has said that he cares more about the grand slam titles than getting back to No. 1).
At this point, winning any one of the slams would be a big record for him. Winning AO would put him alone with the most aussie titles. Winning FO would give him two career grand slams. Winning Wimby would tie him with Sampras. Winning USO would put him alone with the most US Open titles (all open era records ofc). There are also some other records they would break of course
Anyway looking forward so much to Roger's upcoming match :D massive Federer fan, he's my personal hero ~
And thanks for making the OP! I was going to do so but because I may not be able to get on the computer regularly and consistently, I didn't want to leave a dead OP.
And wow, we really need to revitalize our tennis community T___T the old threads got tons of views and posts but lately our grand slam threads have been relatively unvisited. It is my personal opinion that boring grindfests today and the homogenization of surfaces (wimby is actually slower than USO iirc) are KILLING TENNIS! Kidding, not that strong of a sentiment but at least personally, watching these changes and watching Djoko/Nadal grind out games is extremely boring. And there's also the fact that AO final could have been about 1.5 hours shorter had the players kept to the allotted changeover/resting times. I much prefer Federer's style of play, though it's harder and harder to maintain over longer periods of time and he can't bail himself out as well with ridiculous shots anymore etc.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure the lower viewership/posting in TL grand slam threads is somewhat unrelated to this, but yeah....hoping Federer owns face and makes a legendary run Last edit: 2012-06-29 16:27:43 |

Wow in some periods Nadal was really outplayed, haven't seen him outclassed that way since he played Tsonga in the Australian open ´08. Sure its sad to see one of the favorites to win the whole thing lose but at the same time the Cinderella story of Rosol makes up for it many times over I feel. Also it gives me chills to see someone play like that when they're in the zone regardless of sport, it's Awesome |

I think Nadal's problem is the inevitable side-by-side with Federer. I don't think anyone could seriously argue that he's anything other than a phenomenal athlete, but the Fed is just such a likeable and popular player with such a beautiful style that Nadal ends up suffering the monkey shtick.
Personally, I enjoy Fed's tennis more and also naturally want to see records tumbling, so I hope for him to win just about everything. By default, that means I'm against Nadal, and since Nadal has straight-up manhandled Fed so many times I can't help but be a little glad when he goes out early. I think problems crop up when that mentality gets out of hand. Last edit: 2012-06-29 17:04:48 |
