Macbook Pro died, need a new laptop

Need a sub-$500 laptop for media playback/browsing internet, screen size doesn't matter much I guess

So my macbook pro died after 5 years and many batteries. Never buying Apple again (what a mistake). It was a core 2 duo 2.4 Ghz with 8600M graphics and 2 GB (I think, don't remember now because the display is dead). The cost of an Apple battery is like $100, not to mention the cost to fix the display, so I decided to just buy a new laptop.

I'm pretty set on Asus, because I hear they're super low temp vs other laptops. I usually lie down on my bed and put the laptop on my stomach, and my macbook pro would always be so hot it would leave red marks... Would an Asus be the same? Maybe I just use laptops the wrong way...

Anyways, the two ones I'm considering are:
http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-A53E-AS31-WT-15-6-Inch-Laptop-White/dp/B007MW140O/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top for $480 vs
http://www.adorama.com/ASX53ERS31.html for $400 with a coupon

Now, the only discernible difference I can see is that the A53E is in white (which I like better than black), and it has about 250GB more HD space. Is there any difference in construction? Because aside from that, it seems the two laptops are identical. I think the A53E is technically newer because it was released at a later date?

Which would you choose? If neither, are there any other sub-$500 suggestions? I would use this laptop mainly to watch media and browse the internet, I have a desktop for gaming so I don't really need a gaming laptop.

How badly do you need a keyboard?

For browsing / media consumption, a tablet might be a better idea. It doesn't get as hot, is lighter, has longer battery life, has better build quality, and contains a much better display compared to a sub-$500 laptop. I wouldn't do it personally because of software and lack of keyboard (also lack of hard drive, and an SD card and/or networked storage may not be acceptable), but for a lot of people it might make more sense.

I would get the Thinkpad Edge E430 for 494$ from Lenovo's site.

Ivy bridge processor that most aren't offering at that price point (on sale now actually) and Thinkpad build quality (kinda). It's made of plastic, but it is still built above average compared to the 500$ market.

http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/builder.workflow:Enter?sb=%3A00000025%3A0000327E%3A&smid=77160E70986F3A542955F35F555662EF

Allows some customization like CPU, battery, display (kind of, glossy or matte), battery (48wh to 62wh for 10$), and hard drive. I've looked at a lot of the options at 500$ for my brother and I picked this for him.

You say you don't need a gaming desktop, but at least the HD4000 will perform much better than HD3000 (and you don't pay any extra for it).

Edit: HDD is smaller (500GB for 10$ though), but the only downside is you would have to shell out 30$ for an integrated camera.

Right before your macbook died, did it become incredibly slow and unresponsive yet would run? I have the exact same macbook, and they are incredibly prone to hard drive failure. I've had this twice(over 5 years) an its easily fixed by paying 100 bucks for a new hardrive.

Hmm, you may be on to something there... I never had a tablet before. What do you mean by better quality screen? would it be better to watch stuff on a 10.1" tablet vs 15.6" laptop screen? Maybe I'll stick to a laptop because I've never used a tablet before.

Well a lot of tablet screens use high quality IPS panels, which are much much better than the crap TN quality things that exist in sub-1000$ laptops. You would have much better viewing angles, contrast, color etc. Subjectively, everything would just "look better"

At 500$ you could probably get a cheap ipad3 (i don't remember what the base price is) or any kind of android tablet. If you need to use MS word or any of the x86 things, you will either need to wait for Windows 8, or just grab a laptop.

1) LCD screens are very hard to kill so I'm surprised your screen "died".
2) nVidia GPUs from that generation were fucking terrible. If you remember that period, every manufacuter that used nVidia 8000 series mobile GPUs suffered from some sort of GPU failure. This is not Apple at fault, this is nVidia's fault and this is reflected by the class action against them.

That being said, get a tablet if that's all you do. They aren't heavy, they've got good screens, and they've great battery life no X86-based laptop will achieve. The only real (not stupid) options are the recently released Google Nexus 7, iPad 2, or iPad 3. The Google Nexus 7 is only $200 and you can buy the iPad 2/3 through Apple's Refurb store. They're second hand returns but Apple does a good job making them basically identical to new models (I believe even have same warranty as new models).

The biggest things tablets offer are:
- Tight pixel pitch so you don't see the screen door effect. This improves text and image quality dramatically.
- Good viewing angles.
- Decent contrast.
- Better colour space coverage. Most non Apple/1080P/high end Sony/IPS laptop screens on laptops can't even properly display all of the colours on a jpeg.
- Very good battery life.
- less weight, less bulk
- Efficient hardware no mechanical parts needed so no noise. Also means much less heat output.

Everything about tablets is just...better for content consumption. Also, I don't see a point in waiting for Windows 8. Look at it this way:

If you want to type basic documents, you have iWork on the iOS App Store which is an adequate Word replacement (in some ways better if you are more concerned with presentation). If you don't care about doing lots of work on a mobile device, then you have refurbished iPads and the Google Nexus 7 ($200 brand new for a Nexus device) that will web browse and watch videos just as good.

If you want X86 support, you're going to pay more than $500 because of the Intel processor alone. If Microsoft was to subsidies the tablet and it actually puts pressure on the iPad, Apple can just decrease the price of the iPad because Apple has a better supply chain, better profit margins, as well as nearly double the amount of Microsoft's cash-on-hand. Basically whatever Windows 8 does, Apple and Google can offer better and cheaper tablet devices.

It just became super hot... and every time I buy a new battery it dies after 13 months, conveniently after the warranty expires.

The tablet is getting more and more enticing. But, even if it's a better quality display, it's like half the size. Would it be a noticable difference for someone like me who has used a 15" screen my entire life?

Well I have used 15" screens forever, and I have a kindle fire that I read on/use in bed every morning/when I'm eating at the table. I don't really feel any true issues reading it. I have to scroll around a LITTLE bit, but it's a 7" tablet, and considerably smaller than others. On my girlfriend's iPad (the original), neither of us seem to have any real trouble reading anything on it, or watching movies etc.

I was just mentioning W8 because Surface looked much more attractive than any of the Android tablets out, although to be under 500$ I guess he would need to get the ARM version. But regardless it still looks better than Android stuff we'll have to see if it's better than iPad though.

But yeah like he said, if you want a tablet, get either an iPad (the new version starts at 500$, and the iPad 2 starts at 400$ from Apple's own website) or maybe the new Google device (I never read much up on it). The google nexus will be much much cheaper though.

The new iPad
The old iPad (iPad 2)
General apple iPad store, there is a comparison of the new and old iPad on the right.

For cheaper... I think Anandtech has some reviews on the nexus 7. Or hands on review at least, check there to see if you like it.

No one can answer that, it's up to you to visit and Apple store or something and look at the iPad's screen; watch a few youtube vids, and see how you like it. adjusting to screen sizes varies, you'll get used it. I remember when I went from 1280x800 13" screen to a 15" 768p screen. Then I went to 15" 1080p and it was completely alien to me, but I adjusted, and the 1366x768 screen is SO BIG.

You'll end up adjusting, don't worry. Just compare screen sizes at the Apple store or something.

I had a mac and purchased the care plan. I found the easiest way to say fuck you apple was to activate the plan 2 months after I purchased it. Of course a month after the warrenty would have expired (had I got the plan at the beginning), I took it in and got a replacement. Although my new one has started experiencing the same problems, but it is almost 3 years old now. I am going to probably be looking through this thread a lot too!

If you like to lie down while browsing and watching casts etc then tablet is the way to go hands down. Laptops are the most awkward things to use while lying down.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I've given up on my macbook pro because even if I somehow got it to boot, it'd still be slow/super hot. I also don't want to give Apple anymore money... I think I'm going to stick with a laptop for now because I don't think I could use a 7" tablet, and I have a feeling the new Google tablet will be pushing tablet prices down in the future. I'm now stuck between an

Asus 15.6" i3-2350m (2.3 Ghz) 500 GB 5400rpm $400 w/ coupon http://www.adorama.com/ASX53ERS31.html
vs
Lenovo Thinkpad 15.6" i5-3210m (2.5 Ghz up to 3.1 Ghz) 320gb 7200m $530 w/ coupon http://shop.lenovo.com/us/laptops/thinkpad/edge-series/e530
Rest of specs are pretty much identical.

1. Is $130 worth it for the upgrade from Sandy bridge to Ivy bridge? My old motherboard on my desktop had Intel 3000 builtin graphics which I used for somewhile, but I think I felt my computer lag in windows 7 and while watching youtube... This disappeared when I put in my GTX470. I hear the Intel 4000 graphics totally trump the Intel 3000... but I guess it won't matter if I'm not playing games?

2. How much of a speed difference would I see in just browsing youtube/opening applications/skype?

3. Anyone have experience with either of these brands? Which do you think will last longer? I know thinkpads have a reputation for being pretty sturdy, but I don't know since Lenovo took over...

Thanks!

Make sure you take the hd off your macbook and list the computer on ebay, Apple products, for all their faults, have a resale value above any pc product.

2 Things:

1) He's in the US. So he probably won't be ordering from ncix.com.

2) No, that's a bad idea. I would much rather have a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E430/E530 (14" is cheap if you dont mind) they have a sale on right now that ends tomorrow night - i5-3210M (HD4000 obviously) and 4 gb ram etc for only 500$.

Edge E430
Edge E530

If you're getting a laptop, I don't think there are any better values out there right now, I don't think that any other manufacturers are offering ivy bridge at 500$, and the Edge will be built slightly better than anything else you can find. It won't be perfect because of the price, but it's a bit better than the general 500$ laptop.

You can upgrade the battery to 62wh for 10$ (about 6.5 hours on web browsing load... found a review somewhere but don't wanna look again) and if you need a webcam, that can also be updated. You can also get another 20-40$ off if you're a student.

Both of those should pretty much seriously outperform that AMD laptop for example, and the HD4000 is much better than the HD3000 in that asus.

I'd take the Thinkpad Edge E430 above (okay, E530 if you want the 15" screen), even though like for all laptops in the price range, the screen is going to suck.

Yeah. E430 reviews did pretty much unanimously say the screen sucks, never bothered to look up E530 reviews. But no laptop will really give a decent screen there, that's the one clearcut advantage tablets seem to have in that range, but you don't want an ipad so I guess that's a moot point.
