I'm trying to connect a second monitor to my PC but can't seem to get it working.

My graphics card has two DVI ports, an HDMI out and a DP out. My motherboard has a DVI and a VGA out. My main monitor is connected into the graphics card through the DVI port, but my additional monitor only has a VGA out. I have connected it to the motherboard but it doesn't work.

I think I'm correct in saying that you can't have one monitor connected to the graphics card and one connected to the motherboard, but if anybody knows how I could get them working, that would be great.

not all motherboards support the pcie16x running along side the onboard gfx.

however if your motherboard does support it, you need to enable the onboard gfx in your bios.

if your motherboard does not support running onboard along side pcie16x then get a dvi to vga converter and just run both monitors off of your gfx card.

Of course it doesn't work. It needs to be connected to the GPU.

You can probably use a DVI to VGA adapter if really needed. Most DVI ports (all?) on graphics cards have analogue pins required to deal with VGA signals. You just need to make sure the cable accepts analogue signals - so if you want to use a DVI cable, it must be a DVI-I cable.
