Ok, so I am extremely frustrated right now. Spent last night and this morning trying to fix my computer.
The problem I'm having is I can't play SC2 anymore. I am upgrading from:
i3-2100 4850 8gb ddr3 WD 1TB Caviar Black CX430 PSU H61 mobo (never had any problems with SC2 on this computer)
To:
i5-2500k MSI 560 Ti OC 8gb ddr3 (reusing the old ram) 120gb agility 3 ssd CX600 PSU P77 mobo
I was so excited to be "upgrading" to a new computer, but last night as I fired up SC2, I ran into some major issues. Within the first few seconds of the game, my FPS drops in and out. At one point, I got pushed out of the game onto my desktop. When I entered back into the game, all sorts of weird things happened.. Couldn't see my cursor, the game buttons were all weird (F10 didn't open up the menu for example), etc. An in-game message popped up saying my "page pool memory is low" or something. I googled about this and this seems to be a somewhat common problem with nvidia cards. I tried some of the suggestions like increasing my virtual memory, but it didn't solve the problem. I tried the latest drivers, as well as the latest beta drivers. Still doesn't work. One thing I didn't try, is this: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=113433, mainly because I'm not sure if that method is outdated..
At this point, I'm thinking I might have set up my computer incorrectly. Here's how I set up my computer.. and I'm hoping maybe someone can catch if I did something wrong.
1. Formatted the SSD using my old computer. 2. Put all my new computer parts together. Pretty sure everything is connected correctly. 3. Installed Windows 7 64-bit. 4. Installed everything that came with the CD from my motherboard (ASRock Z77 Pro4-m). 5. There were a few things I uninstalled afterwards because I thought they were unnecessary. (I can't remember exactly what they were, but two of them were "ASRock XFast USB" utility and "ASRock XFast LAN" Utility.) 6. Installed the GPU drivers via the CD that came with it. 7. Went to MSI to dl/install their latest GPU drivers. 8. Went to Nvidia to dl/install latest drivers.
Note: I went to MSI first because I thought they use different drivers since the card comes factory OCed. When I tried playing Diablo 3, I was notified that my GPU drivers were not the latest.. so that's when I went to Nvidia. Also note that I did not do a "clean install" for the GPU drivers.
So that was all Friday night. Saturday night, I began installing SC2. After the game finished installing, it proceeded to dl a bunch of patches (took over 1 hour). During this time, I was trying to play Diablo 3, but every so often, the Blizzard updater thing would bring me back out to the desktop. It got annoying so I stopped playing D3. Ok, so once all the patches were installed, I began playing SC2 and immediately noticed the problem I described earlier. Like I said, this apparently is a somewhat common problem, and I tried multiple suggestions and still am not able to play the game. I don't think there ever was a clear solution. I proceeded to completely uninstall my graphics drivers, which turned out to be a huge pain, and then reinstalled the drivers.
Now I am stuck. Diablo 3 currently seems run fine on the latest nvidia drivers, but Starcraft 2 is not playable. I think it's a problem with the GPU, but I am not entirely sure. At this point, I am thinking about doing a complete clean install of Windows and everything else, unless someone can recommend a better solution. And if I do a clean install, what are the proper steps I should take to ensure I am updating all my drivers correctly? |

reinstall XFAST USB, it boosts your USB speed by 15~20% by elimating overhead on 1 port(you can get up to 335mb/s on usb3.0).
My suggestion reinstall sc2 while DOING Nothing else (it would be funny as fuck if D3 was causing the problems because they use the same updater code). |

The error sounds like it has to do with your page file. Thing is, with that much memory and an SSD, you shouldn't even have page file activated. There are guides online to optimizing your settings for an SSD, one of the tips is to disable your page file. Are you using the WD HDD just for extra storage?
You shouldn't have that many processes on a fresh install of W7, so lack of memory shouldn't really be a problem. Check System Information to make sure all 8gb of your memory is being recognized. Open Task Manager and check Performance. Maybe run SC2 in Windows mode and see if CPU or memory usage spikes when you encounter an error.
IDK about the drivers because I use ATI, but the ATI installer automatically uninstalls old drivers before installing new ones. I usually never install things from the CD for any thing, as they are usually horribly outdated. |

Ok, just reinstalled SC2 without running anything in the background. Results came out worse... immediately after I logged into battlenet, my friend messaged me to play with him.. I was barely able to type a message back to him because the game was freezing in and out. I was able to say "I can't" and then a few seconds later, I was forced back onto my desktop, in this weird state where I then had to ctrl+alt+del and close SC2 (which was not responding) from there.
And on a related note.. I've started seeing similar signs of this problem for D3, though not nearly as bad. I mean, one time, my computer froze for 2 seconds, which was enough to get me killed.. so that's pretty bad. Another time, I was just browsing the auction house in the menus and felt some freezing/lag..
I think what I'll try next is swap video cards to check if that's the problem.
[Edit] Jesus Christ. I kinda forgot about it.. but I remember running into problems with the Catalyst Control Center and my 4850. I remember installing the latest CCC would sometimes cause my computer to be unable to load Windows correctly.. so I had to use an older version of CCC and install just the new graphics drivers. I just ran back into that same problem after installing the 4850 on my new machine. And now I'm going back to find the correct CCC version. Such a pain. FML!
[EDIT 2] I don't know how I got it to work, but I finally got my 4850 running in place of the 560 Ti and the good news is I can confirm that the problem is coming from the 560 Ti. Just ran a game of SC2 with the 4850, and there were no problems. It's only been 1 game, and I cannot play anymore tonight because I need to sleep, but I am pretty sure the problem lies with the 560 Ti.. sooo what should I do now?Last edit: 2012-07-03 19:11:09 |

| Bump.. I just saw a post from Blizzard saying they players are experiencing problems with D3 (and probably SC2 as well) with GPUs that came factory OCed, and they recommend returning the GPUs back to stock speeds. Does anyone have any guides on how to do this?? |

Just look up stock speeds and use something like MSI afterburner to downclock. But it sounds like it's related to GPU use being allowed to run high causing stability issues. I never have issues, since I vsync for tearing, which keeps my GPU use well below stupidly high numbers. |

I'd suggest setting up multiple profiles, one downclocked to stock for those games until/unless you hear of a fix or try a framecap, and then another profile for any other games.

Have you tried DriverSweeper to remove old drivers before installing new drivers?

The problems probably aren't related to the SSD, but as someone that has been using the same one, I suggest you update its firmware anyway. They have really ramped up the stability and performance. Here's the instructions:
http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?99275-NEW!-Bootable-tools-for-OCZ-SSD-s
Besides that, I would try wiping out the GPU drivers and installing different versions, maybe even stick with the older MSI supported ones.Last edit: 2012-07-05 15:09:14 |

I believe the SSD came with the latest firmware. Thanks for the suggestion, but I think I am getting close to fixing the problem...

I'm a little confused. The above is what I set my clock speeds at according to this page: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20120503194342AAgmqix
Core Clock = 822 MHz Memory Clock = 1645 MHz
Then I realized on the nvidia page, http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-560ti/specifications :
Graphics Clock (MHz) 822 Processor Clock (MHz) 1645 Memory Clock (MHz) 4008 Gbps
My question is for MSI Afterburner, what value should I set the Memory Clock to? The max I can set it is 2605 MHz. The default settings were 2004 MHz (which probably isn't coincidentally half of 4008?) |

| try clocking it at 1900. also, what settings are you running starcraft on? do you have another gfx card you could swap in? |

Surely a simple diagnosis test would be to swap in your old gfx card. If it runs at least as well (your CPU is faster), then it's a gfx issue and you've narrowed it down.
I've found overclocked cards can give strange issues. In my case, my 2nd monitor (LCD TV) displays random horizontal tearing, which after much headache, I discovered goes away when I ran it at stock. |
