Hi TL Aussies!,
My wife and I will be visiting Australia from August 1-18. In order, we'll be in going from Melbourne (1-5) -> Kangaroo Island (6-10) -> Cairns (11-15) -> Sydney (16-18). I did some searching and there have been barcrafts in Melbourne and Sydney in the past so I'd be really excited to meet some of you, watch SC2 (which transcends cultures), stuff my face with australian junk food and beer, and learn some of your lingo!
Unfortunately, we're arriving after GSL finals so that won't work. GSTL finals are on August 4th if there's a barcraft in Melbourne for that... and I'm not sure whether there's an event for which there'd be a barcraft in Sydney from 16-18.
I'm assuming no one lives on Kangaroo island
Also, any other recommendations for restaurants etc while I'm in your town?
Thanks!, Richard |

Hey Richard,
I don't know how many Aussies will respond to this, so I'll do it although I'm not based anywhere near where you're staying! I'm from Brisbane, but our SC2 community is pretty active in every state. I'm not sure you'll be able to find a barcraft for GSTL finals, as they usually hold them only for GSL at the moment (the timing really suits us here down-under, as opposed to hosting an MLG barcraft that would start at 2am and end at 10am).
I've poked around on the sc2sea forums, but I can't see if anything has been announced yet (Australia has really terrible internet, and I'm currently download capped). I'll check it again soon to see if anything is happening.
If I had to recommend anything for Sydney/Melbourne it is that Melbourne is viciously unpredictable when it comes to whether, so pack an umbrella always, and expect bipolar weather. Melbourne is a huge culture capital, and make sure you take your time checking out all the little cafes and things you'll find along your way.
Sydney is.. imo a very bland city, and I didn't enjoy my time there last time... but I recommend checking out a Cityhunter event if there is one on... you are bound to meet some of the SEA superstars there, like Mafia, Pig, iaguz and Rossi. Moonglade is (unfortunately for you ) a Brisbanite, so unless he is down there for an event you may not meet him!!
Also, be careful in Cairns, it can be a rough area and it is often a culture shock to many tourists that travel through there! |

Thanks Solis!
I didn't know that about Cairns. We'll primarily be doing tourist stuff like the reef and the rainforest but after your warning, I'll definitely be a little more careful.
You're not the first to say that about Sydney though I wonder whether any Sydneysiders would dispute that! We'll be doing some wine stuff, checking out the tourist sites, and going to the zoo Sometimes I feel like SEA and NA are worlds apart - I know Moonglade from various tournaments, but I think I've only see Mafia, Pig, iaguz, and Rossi once or twice. The names sound familiar but I can't even tell you what race they play. I feel bad just typing that.
We'll be going to an animal sanctuary and exploring the city in Melbourne. I'm really looking forward to trying Australian food or the australian take on other ethnic foods.
Sorry about not going to Brisbane! It was actually a late scratch for us. My wife is a big fan of the relaxed laws in Queensland about cuddling animals
I'm crossing my fingers on a GSTL barcraft. I wanted to head over at the end of July originally but too many work issues. And I completely get your point about MLG when you put it like that.
Cheers, R

Hi Morp,
It would be a good idea to post this in the sc2sea.com.au forums. You should get plenty of cheer.
Good luck and hope you enjoy your stay in Oz. |

It's alright, there isn't much in Brisbane anyways .
Sydney has plenty. For food/drinks, make sure you check out Darling Harbour / Cockle Bay Wharf in the city for some really nice restaurants. A small walk down the pier from Cockle Bay Wharf is King St Wharf which has some very nice relaxed bars/pubs/clubs.
Hope you enjoy it mate. |

My hometown is just south of Cairns so I am familiar with the area. If you are interested in checking out the rain forest try looking at Kuranda, 25km northwest of Cairns.Kuranda offerers a scenic train ride or the Skyrail which are both fairly popular with tourists. You also have the Daintree which is a bit further out at 2hours north. It has been around 10-15 years since i've visited but it was a good place to visit and offered quite a few attractions. The Reef Casino in cairns also has an animal wildlife exhibition which might be an option if you need to use up a few hours.
I guess some of this is assuming you will be renting a car? Last edit: 2012-07-03 16:33:00 |

The Melbourne starcraft guys are really nice and friendly! Took well care of me when I got there. Korean BBQ is a winner! |

Thanks for the responses guys!
The Australian/Asian fusion cuisine is something I'm really looking forward to. Just quickly browsing shows that many good restaurants in Sydney/Melbourne are Asian.... but oftentimes with local Australian ingredients. Aussie Korean BBQ can only be great
shizzz - We're actually doing exactly that. We're headed on the Skyrail to Kuranda.. I'm glad you think it's worthwhile too. Sounded great reading about it.
cozzE - will do!
Mutant - Thanks for the suggestion. I'll post there now
Cheers, R |

Hey man!
Kangaroo Island would put you right near Adelaide Barcraft which I help run with a bloke from SC2SEA, but unfortunately those dates are no good. Which incidently means you miss out on our local beer, Coopers
On the plus side though, You'll be in Sydney for IEM
Cairns is stunning, and foreigners always seem to love Kangaroo Island too (as a local, I suffer from a bit of 'been there, done that'). The wildlife and natural environment in these two places is really special, I personally love Cairns and N Queensland, and my cousin moved there! And do yourself a favour and make sure you drive or get driven over Sydney harbour bridge.
Hope you have fun in Aus! |

Sydney is great for tourists. All the landmarks are here, the food is reasonably priced if you look in the right places, and the people are kind and often as curious as you to see new things. Darling Harbour on Saturday night usually has fireworks, and is a great place. I also recommend a ride around on a ferry at least once, there are shots of the harbour bridge/opera house you can only get on a boat. Bridgeclimb is also recommended for tourists, haven't done it myself but those who have say its worth it. Asian food is always good around here, as you've said with the whole fusion twist. I'd recommend Thai almost more then KBBQ. Also, I'd hate to disappoint, but don't expect a dramatic change in lingo in the major hubs. Generally just a change in accent and mate gets thrown around a lot.
But we're glad you're coming over to Australia, locals are always friendly if you ask for directions, or just a good bite. Note: Brisbanites generally find Sydney boring. Ignore them and get over here, and have a great time :D. |

TheSneak mentioned coopers and you won't miss out as it comes in stubbies everywhere, not the same as tap but as long as they roll the bottle it's still good, I recommend the pale ale. In Melbourne you should check out Lygon street too, crazy italian fellas flogging nice food and cheap wine Drink lots of beer is my best advice and get some proper Lebbo kebabs in Sydney too they are well tasty. |

lol!
Chris - I really would like to go to Perth but it's just a time thing. The west coast probably gets neglected all the time When making an itinerary from abroad, it's just so much easier to hit multiple stops on the east coast.
BBQSAC - Got it. Beer and Kebabs
Mudkipz - Looking forward to it! One thing I've noticed is how much pride aussies have in their cities. I can't wait to explore.
Sneak - So sorry I'll be missing your barcraft - the posters you guys make up are awesome. I'll make sure to check out coopers. I love beer so I wonder whether aussie beer is any different from belgian beer is any different from english beer and is any different from american pis-I mean beer. Where is IEM this time? If there's a barcraft or event during IEM that'd be fun as well.
Cheers, R

Hi morp,
My roommate recently came back from a few nights in Mission Beach (~130km south of cairns) and it reminded me of this thread, so I thought I'd give it a mention. If you've already planned to or find yourself heading south of Cairns, Paronella Park might also be an option if you have the time. |

Oh man, you're in Sydney on the wrong days else you could totally come to the WCS Oceania on 10-12 August (http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=353793)
And the only weird people who go to Barcrafts are those two girls I met who went missing for dinner then turned up at a cityhunter with fried chicken in a tissue box.
Haven't been to one since oddly enough... |

Australia (Sydney) is expensive. Sydney is cold (although America probably gets way colder)
Watch out for lads, kangaroos, police, transit cops, fobs, bogans, Asian tourists, Asian citizens, Indians, hipsters, homeless people, crazy people, crazy homeless people (there's a difference!), getting glassed and landmines (we've cleared most of them but you never know)
Newtown has a lot of quirky spots and nice beer gardens (sadly not an actual beer growing garden) but obvious tourist spots are Darling Harbour/Circular Quay. Go to Circular Quay and take a ferry to Cockatoo island (aka. "Cock or two" island), if you get the all stops one on a good day it pretty much goes by every tourist attraction and it's cheap. Cockatoo Island has an awesome art event going on right now, it's a big island that used to be a ship building yard that now has a really chill bar. It's one of Sydney's best features.Last edit: 2012-07-20 00:31:02 |

Great advice. I was going to mention the Biennale (art exhibition held every second year), but you've beaten me to it. Here's the website for it: http://bos18.com/. I'd also check out Coogee beach (less touristy than Bondi). Also, you MUST walk through the Botanic gardens next to the opera house:

Average temperature in Sydney during August is about 65 fahrenheit, quite comfortable really. Hope we can show you a good time!
