A certain statement caught my eye in the OSL qualifier interviews translated by storywriter.
What do you think of the dual tournament being split?
Since we started playing first, I think that playing together (with the KeSPA players) would be unfair. I'm just planning on thinking of the KeSPA players as a bonus and picking them during the group nominations.
From this question and answer, we can glean the format of the OSL, which was previously a mystery.
Parting states that the GSL and Kespa players will not be playing together at first, but that they will meet at the "group nominations." Historically, group nominations have taken place before the Ro16.
It does not take a huge leap in logic to see that the format of the OSL will go like this: there will be 16 GSL players who compete for 8 spots in the Ro16, and there will be 16 Kespa players who do the same. The competition will take place in a format like last season's dual tournament. The first time Kespa players and GSL players will meet will be in the Ro16.
None of this is officially confirmed, but I don't see any way that this isn't the format.
EDIT: Oh, this also means that Jangbi/Flash/ZerO might have been seeded into this OSL.
EDIT 2: supernovamaniac says that there will be two seeds from the current BW OSL.Last edit: 2012-07-02 23:43:32 |

| So ro16 will be the place where elephants will be slain ? I guess it's necessary to maintain some continuity with BW, but it still won't be pretty. Last edit: 2012-07-02 23:14:25 |

the youtube streams as well as our BW restreamers should be streaming this. There's also a thread in the BW section to watch the live OGN stream using VLC player as well. |

I can confirm that there will be only 2 seeds from this OSL.
I can also confirm that the dual tournaments will be separate, and the KeSPA/non-KeSPA players will meet for the first time in group selection. |

GTR/someone similar had a really good post explaining how the format would be working in this upcoming OSL in a different thread but pretty much its as you have it with them meeting in Ro16.
Also it might not be a complete massacre, considering how far away it would be. You would have to wait at least 1~2 months for this upcoming OSL to wrap up and then go through ODT. Unlike GSL, ODT will take a month or two as well if OGN follow their usual schedule.
All up, it gives Kespa players around 3-4 months to solely focus on SC2. The current semi-finalists and finalists of OSL will have a bit less time, but there will be at least 1-2months where they can catch up more. |

Even with a couple of months to prepare, these will be the best 16 Code S players in the world going up against the best 16 BW players. While many BW players seem to be nearing the level of Code A quals or maybe Code A, I don't see them doing well against the likes of MKP, MC, DRG, Nestea, MVP, Symbol, Parting, Byun etc.
edit: I do, however, think that someone like Flash will do well. It's just that there are a lot more than just Flash in BW, and after you get past Effort, Baby and so on most of them have been pretty poor in showings so far in SC2.Last edit: 2012-07-02 23:56:20 |

Interesting, if this is true I think it's actually a pretty good way to handle it. You get to keep the KeSPA players around for at least a full round, then you create a nice clash in the Ro16. And while I do agree that the GSL players will be favorites, I wouldn't be too surprised if there are one or two upsets. We're still talking about really dedicated, talented players with great support behind them; while I have to imagine they're at a disadvantage overall, I think we could still see some clever pre-planned builds or tactics, plus the occasional build order win, plus the chance of a KeSPA player having a good game while a GSL player blunders. That said, because it'll be a group stage, it may be difficult. One Bo3 may be winnable, but two or three is harder.
It will be interesting if the quarterfinals wind up being all GSL players, though. For the sake of variety, I hope some of the KeSPA guys get through, though. I think it would also be good for tournament viewership and interest overall if a BW fan-favorite manages to stand up against some big GSL names. |
