If you have suggestions for additions, name your suggestion and put a brief description of it (described enough to be added to the list) as much as I want to put everything up, I may simply just not know what it is, and if people keep adding I won't be able to keep up, thanks in advance.
A new section was added "Community requests" And this is where I'll post peoples request for a "specific " program that they can't find, you don't have to create it (if that's what you thought) just if you know of something similar, that can be added to this forum thread.
Please note, not all programs will be free to use (many free to try or use partial amounts of the software) but most downloadable content will be. This notes towards the Anti-Virus section the most, but carries into other products as well. If you do not know which, take it upon yourself to look them up. Sorry if this was misunderstood.
This thread will be a list of all recommended downloads for people to have, I will update this thread will peoples recommended downloads as this thread progresses. You may refute any "recommended" DL with another, and that will be the main discussion.
Looking for a "search software" better than windows, and a "duplicate file finder" to clear his PC, thank you in advance if you can find this. + Show Spoiler +

Also a duplicate file finder would be nice. I have a ton of manual backups from different computers I've owned as well as a ton of backup files for my autocad files spread all over the place and it would be nice to be able to see all files of the same size and/or name for easier cleanup.
I've tried a few of both kinds but no one have been all that I'm looking for.

Avast Microsoft Security Essentials Avira Malwarebytes (recommended by Me) AVG Norton (special recommendation coming from Jinglehell, who should require no introduction on this forum, out of the "anti virus" thread) + Show Spoiler +

Misinformation. Norton is rock solid these days, with excellent low-profile features. It used to instill fear in people, but now it's one of the only subscription AVs worth paying for.
Not confirmed by myself. If someone can confirm it's application (a second user) that would be fantastic, I have faith from previous posts this is applicable. It is described to "find things most other anti-spyware programs don't)
This program, developed by Kapersky, is used to detect and remove "rootkits" (note, wikipedia rootkits if you do not understand what they are, very useful program)
Do not track is a great website to not only see how your information is constantly tracked, but to stop it (for sites you want to stop it) I put it on 5 days ago, and I average 1000 tracks a day
Adblock, blocks all ads coming to you (this can actually effect a sites ability to function (such as online video streaming sites) so you may have to unblock those)
If you are ever doing something (at work or at home) that shouldn't be done, such as watching pornography in your living room or at the office, you can hit this button to close all of your tabs, and open a fake tab (which you can go on the web with) and then at any point you hit panic button again and it reopens all of the previous tabs.
Like a phone app, this is simple and easy, it is at the upper right hand of your chrome, click to open a mini window and see all notifications (which it prompts beforehand)
Libre Office (or NEXUS depending on which you choose) + Show Spoiler +
Libre office is an extension of Google documents, which in turn gives you the ability to edit documents online (or offline if using google doc offline beta), this is extremely efficient for on the fly editing, whether at a business conference and you mistyped your presentation (say an error) or just want to edit something.
Skype is a free to use software that is one of the most well known online video calling services to date, you may also pay minimal fee's (such as a few pennies) to call live phones (whether cellular or at home)
Vent is a free to use communication software which allows gamers to chat on the fly via a very simple to use interface. This is not recommended for business calls, but for a group of players gaming.
Similar to vent (except for its interface) this has become one of the mainstays for professional pro gaming teams and playerrs alike, it's easy to access and speedy interface allows spot free communication.
if you download stuff that is split into many parts from free filehosting sites you can put the list of links into this program and it will download them one by one automatically and even supports autocaptcha for some of the websites
This is a program which doesn't search for "duplicate files" but displays a graphical representation of your hard drive, which may come in handy when doing minor/major maintenance.
one of the best free vpn services i have ever used, good for circumventing school/work firewalls or The Great Firewall of China if you happen to live there.
a "spin off" of Open Office, this is compatible with MS office documents (to a greater extent than most other "office" programs, more over it is cleaner and the GUI is generally more pleasing. TheToast quotes "Libre Office > Open Office".
Google drive is an efficient use of being able to edit documents on the fly, have friends edit documents and has the ability to "sync" with your computer and have on the fly uploads/downloads. You can also have this on your smart phone, meaning that if you have a grocery list/business list etc you can quickly edit it
Video which explains it all, very well put together
NOTE: You can purchase up to 16TB of data for approx 800$ a month, but everyone gets a free 5 GB online drive. So don't expect to just throw evvvvverything on it.
This is a freeware product which can take screen shots of images ingame/outgame/duringvideos it is very simple and requires no knowledge to use, I recommend this to anyone who ever has technical issues and wants to simply just take a picture of the screen to show the problem.
How it works, you resize the image you wish to capture, you captuire then either "save" or "copy" (for pasting) and the best of all is that you can click "within" the box you are going to take a picture of, it's so intuitive.
A desktop customization tool. It allows you to create and load "skins" for the desktop that can do various things, from adding simple CPU meters to entirely redesigning how the desktop looks.
Open office is a very high quality free "office" program, it has nearly all of the same functions as the monopoly that Microsoft employees on the market, it is efficient and sometimes even quicker and better than office (generally not the case, sadly : D)
Paint.NET runs on windows exclusively (in a general sense) but is not given by windows, it is a free software which is a quote "pretty good one" from user Zeke50100" and is a nice alternative to more expensive image creators.
Quoted as the "best free vector graphics program out there" by technical support (or should be on this forum) user TheToast. This is recommended by that stature alone.

Python is a very (from experience) straight forward to learn "programming language" which has an in depth tutorial and is completely free. If you ever want to learn programming, follow the "guide" and take note of the Big Programming Thread, and you'll be on your way
A very well put together, quick, neat web browser which has great extensions (note above) and good speed. I personally recommend this as your own browser.
Firefox is also a well put together web browser, though in recent years its ingenuity and speed has decreased it is still a great search engine for your basic needs
A vast improvement over the previous IE's (those were the days...), it employees a very simple user interface and competes with Google chrome for speed, though I wouldn't place it above Chromes interface. This will handle all of your needs, but you require Vista>win7>win8 to run it, so sorry XP users
This is a less known browser, it is great for actually circumventing internet blocks at schools/offices by using it's portable version online, I would not recommend this over Chrome/firefox/IE9 however.
Safari is a quick, designed for apple but usable on Windows this browser which employees a very well put together tab page and is quick for searching the web, is great for everyday needs.
That is all for now, there are hundreds (note http://100-downloads.com/) that you can have, so this is just a start. I will edit this thread as it increases (and include whoever posts it into the section below).

Isn't this a useless thread? There are a billion things to download, I can list like 100 things for you to download right now and I'm guessing about 90 of them will be useless or redundant for someone else. Not to mention you're missing obvious ones like Notepad++, DisplayFusion, ImgBurn, Winrar, MSE, Reader, Foobar, Rainmeter, VLC, uTorrent, etc.
You also didn't put much thought into the OP. Someone with no knowledge of programming isn't going to know wtf python is and isn't going to be bothered to look at every spoiler of a long list to see what each one does. Like wtf is a panic button?

Its an interesting idea, but I think skyR has a point. Some of these things I seriously have no clue about, and some of them are probably useless to me. For example I use the google chrome extension for Team Liquid streams, where I can view a list of streams and put up a list of favorites, so I can get notified when they are online. Although not everyone watches streams. However, I do think with more work it could be useful just for people to browse through and download what they think may be useful for them. Of course you would need descriptions for everything you list in order for that to work. Just my two cents.

Did you even read what I wrote or did you miss the point completely? I know what python is but if you expect someone to click every spoiler just to read the description than you have unrealistic expectations. There is absolutely zero categorization in the OP, it's not even listed in alphabetical order. Google results would be more efficient and relevant than picking from a list of just randomly ordered names based on what sounds cool.
I'm guessing this is a list of open source / free software but you make no mention of that anywhere in the OP either.

See, I read what you said, but you've placed such a negative condescending tone to it, that I've taken the liberty to not pay much attention to it. If you wish to comment on the structure, that is fine, I had not thought of placing it in alphabetical organization yet (not large enough) but because you suggested it, I will get around to doing so.
Instead of bitching about how bad the entire thing is, help improve it. This whole "negative this, and that" really does not solve anything. If you don't like the idea, leave it at that, and if you have suggestions, please suggest. But if you want to come in, and shit on my thread, then please message a moderator and ask him if it complies with the forum rules, if it does, please piss off... I would appreciate it.
TLDR: If you want to help, do so, I even accept constructive criticism, but if you don't feel like helping the thread, move along.

Correction: Paint.NET is definitely not "given by Windows". While it is developed using C# and the .NET framework (which is developed by Microsoft), it doesn't actually have anything to do with Windows - the reason it's only for Windows is because .NET is pretty much for Windows. Consider it just another image editing software (and a pretty good one, at that).
Also, for a better description for Rainmeter, you might as well use their official subtitle: A desktop customization tool. It allows you to create and load "skins" for the desktop that can do various things, from adding simple CPU meters to entirely redesigning how the desktop looks.

Please read thread, I know you're trying to help, but I need you to add a description please (I understand it's useful for viruses, but that isn't descriptive enough)
Thank you in advance, when you update I will add them to the list (and your name to the community edits)

put SuperF4. An app for killing programs might not sound useful but once you start using it, it saves a lot of time. You can use this program to instantly kill stubborn programs instead of having to close it from the task manager's process tab.
also consider adding:
ollydbg - probably the best free debugger wireshark - the best network sniffer/analyzer/debugger tool hotspot shield - one of the best free vpn services i have ever used, good for circumventing school/work firewalls or The Great Firewall of China if you happen to live there. MiPony - if you download stuff that is split into many parts from free filehosting sites you can put the list of links into this program and it will download them one by one automatically and even supports autocaptcha for some of the websites skype - one of the best IM clients teamspeak 3 - one of the best programs for voice communication for games. You can use this with your team/clan. autohotkey - easy to ur program for creating macro scripts to automate tasks autoit - similiar to autohotkey
