NOTE: This is not about switching Proleague into SC2 only after this season. This is talking about switching the league MID-SEASON. Sure, some people might say put BW out of misery, but think of it from professional point of view. Switching a league's format mid-season and keeping the past records to determine the winner of the season?

It has been found out that KeSPA is thinking about switching StarCraft Proleague Season 2 to only StarCraft 2.
After the season 2 started, KeSPA has been getting feed backs from Progaming Teams, and the teams think that it is not meaningful to play both BW and SC2 at once. Thus, KeSPA is looking into switching Proleague Season 2 into SC2 only.
Starting this season, KeSPA accepted SC2 as an official "sport" in eSports league. After running the league with both BW and SC2, KeSPA and progaming teams are talking about switching to StarCraft 2 only, starting Round 3.
After July 28th, the last BW OSL final, there won't be any leagues that uses the game StarCraft: BroodWar except Proleague. Essentially, there won't be any individual BW tournaments after this OSL.
The reason behind the sudden switch is because the players don't need to focus on SC:BW at all just because of Proleague (after OSL ends). Also, there have been opinions where some believe that KeSPA players won't be able to do well against the GSL players if they are forced to practice both BW and SC2.
Since some teams stated that they are not practicing BW that much and some players are losing the motivation to play, KeSPA has brought up the idea of switching current Proleague Season 2 format into SC2 only starting 3R, and has opened up the discussion. If there are many positive opinions/feed backs from teams and players, they might switch the Proleague format to SC2 only.
However, it is hard to avoid the complaints from the fans. For any sports, it is necessary to post and keep the format of the league for the entire season. Thus, fans will think that KeSPA is unprofessional and doesn't even know about the basics of running a league. Some are even saying that KeSPA is being irrational with the sudden switch in the league format, especially since many fans disagreed to the hybrid format before beginning of Season 2.
KeSPA stated "We will make the final decision after reviewing everyone's opinion, including fan's reactions and comments. Since we are thinking about changing a format of a league during mid-season, we will carefully review and decide what is best."

I think everyone expected this considering the SC2 OSL is starting fairly soon.

I got the initial reaction of "Yeah, put BW out of misery" but completely switching to SC2 midseason means that no BW in the finals . The players and the game quality are struggling because of this hybrid but it's just one round left, why can't we just finish it til the end instead of changing the format midseason? It might help the Kespa players to prepare for the SC2 OSL though.
Whatever, whether they decide to change or not to change, I still don't like what's happening now. I wish we could just fast forward to next year. By then, everything is beginning to run smoothly(hopefully). |
