This was something I have been wondering lately. I just got 60 a few days back and have been farming act 1 since, mainly farming the first zone and zones up until the skelton king. I play a barb btw.
I've been able to about 100k an hour. and I am not using any MF gear, but have a routine that gets me my 5 stacks of valor within the first 15 mins.
Is MF gear almost requid if I want to farm 200-300k an hour in later acts? or can farming be just as effective without MF gear as it is with it? |

Well 5 stacks give u guaranteed rares. MF helps ofcourse but I noticed at 5 stacks its not much of a difference if you are just elite/champ/bossfarming
But im no expert |

Well, you could always buy cheap MF gear and swap right before kill, that is the most efficient method. However, I myself dislike this practise so I also farm with (next to) no MF. The five stacks are enough for me and otherwise, I just enjoy slaying hordes of bosses. |

| As a Barb farming Act 2, I found that including MF in a (smallish) gear upgrade for some always-on MF really, really changed the quality of the drops. Of course the RNG gods can and will take a gigantic dump on you just for the hell of it, but just off the top of my head, at the beginning of a VotA run yesterday night I found a 1hand rune sword with 750ish dps, 110 dex, 57% crit and socket with just one NV stack - and this never once happened to me before getting 200+ MF to farm with. So if you can include some mf in your next round of upgrades, possibly before the next patch (which in my opinion will drive prices of always-on MF gear even higher up for everybody) I'd suggest you to go for it. |

Although it seems you are losing valuable time switching into a set of magic find gear, it really makes a huge difference. I seem to get an extra rare drop from every 5 stack kill. However, some of my best drops have come when I am too lazy to switch into MF gear, go figure. Also, I wouldn't think of the MF drops in terms of gold per hour. I'll go entire days of playing without anything meaningful. Then all of a sudden you get a 4mil hat. |

| i have really only gotten one good drop which was a chest armor that i promptly equipped. other than that most of the rares are bad. so really, i'm not farming for items, i'm farming for gold. which the 5 stacks definitely helps with. |

| Correct me if I'm wrong, but does MF influence the iLVL on the items? I was under the impression MF increased the chance of better QUALITY items dropping, i.e. a sword being rare instead of magic, or magic instead of white. |

Have your MF items in your inventory next to eachother and right click on them all really quicky? ;o Maybe you're manually dragging them to the item slot? |

I always thought that MF only increased your chance of Getting a rare or magic item. I didn't know that it increased the actual stats on the item, like making the item better. or am I wrong in this.
Like I said, I'm a fresh 60 so I don't know these things that well. |

You are correct. The itemlevel and the stat-rolls of an item are unaffected by MF. All that changes with more MF is the amount of rares, magics and whites you get (mostly: more rares, less whites). |

Might Find this useful
http://www.diablofans.com/topic/57939-ongoing-project-magic-find-and-its-efficiency-a-statistical-insight/
4. Summary / Conclusion
Bringing all the pieces together provides us with:
- Magic find increases the class ("item-color") of the gear found. - Magic find does not increase the number of items found. - Magic find does not increase the iLvl of the gear found. - Whether or not magic find affects affix rolls is not investigated here, but there is no reason as of to suspect that magic find would increase the stat rolls. - Last and most important: Future data collection may help to provide data for computational research on magic find. It will also be investigated if this research is directly applicable to elite farming.
MF's effectiveness doubles between 200% and 300% (this is all without NV stacks)
I personally have my main set with a little MF, and all I do is farm Act 1, because of how fast the clear times are. |

Higher MF increases the chance that the item dropping as a magic/rare.
It is very noticeable when you have no MF you find you get some instances of grey items from mobs, but next to none when you have a decent amount of MF. |

| I accidentally got about 30 natural mf on my main gear, with the NV it goes above 100% so si dont swap at all, the ammount of rares is good enough to my liking, and I feel swpping would actually slow my pace of clearing. Iroll main barbarian btw, it feels easier to swap as ranged classes |

ok, thats what I thought. I don't find many grey items once I get my 5 stacks of mf though, but I guess the suggestion that was fiven eariler is that I should implement some mf into my next upgrade round, just for some extra kick. though prices are a bit steep, 10-20 mil for a good item, that is an upgrade and has MF.
or since because I am farming mostly normal mobs, would Gold fine be worth it more in the end then MF?Last edit: 2012-07-10 18:31:59 |

Quit this game a while ago, but I'll second what was said here. I switched up to 220+ MF with stacks before a kill and typically got at least one more rare per elite and boss than when I didn't. It does matter. One of the reasons I don't play anymore is because being forced to play in gimmicky ways like that to get optimal loot makes the game far less fun (in my opinion, at least). |

Imo, I don't think gold find is worth it. Most people, including myself have trouble obtaining insane DPS+MF+defensivestat gear so I would say getting a balance of MF/DPS without sacrificing too much on clear speed would be best. Of course MF swapping is important before killing elite packs as well to increase chance of phat loots. |

Whoa, 10-20 mil? Sounds like a hell of a lot, what kind of build are you using?
Personally I wouldn't bother with gold find, the currency is losing value on a daily basis and just one lucky drop can net you the equivalent of a lot of boring hours farming trash mobs. Are you having a lot of trouble handling elites in Act 1? |

| I dont see any sense farming the later acts at all, keep your weapon and off hand equipped and deck yourself out in mf + primary stat gear (doesnt have to be a lot / on every piece), that'll cost ~500k. So long as you have around 20k dps you'll faceroll and still get a ton of rares infinitely more quickly than later acts. |
