Hey guys,
I've got this old computer standing about:
Intel Core 2 2,13 ghz 2 gigs of Ram Nvidia Geforce 7900 GS
Here are the exact specs:
http://support.euro.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim9200/en/SM_EN/specs.htm
I can play Diablo 3 and SC2 on pretty low settings, but that's about it.
Are there any cheap upgrades I could get that help my computer perform at a little better? Which is the "bottleneck"?
Really all I want is to play recent and upcoming Blizzard-titles. My current flatscreen is an old Samsung Syncmaster 19" that can only display 1600*12000, but in the long term, I'd consider upgrading that one as well.
I'd really appreciate your help! |

Unfortunately, the "bottleneck" is everything.
Edit: To be more detailed, the GPU and CPU are extremely outdated and upgrading both will give you significantly more performance. Upgrading the CPU basically requires you to buy a completely new system. This will likely mean a new motherboard, CPU, RAM, PSU, and chassis at the very least.
Don't bother updating the monitor yet. Last edit: 2012-07-10 22:50:03 |

I had hoped that at least the CPU would do, so I could upgrade RAM and GPU and be done with it for the recent Blizzard titles. |

well it wouldnt hurt to upgrade the gpu and ram and honestly if you can play the games already you will be able to play them after upgrading only better, so yeah do it, or buy a new pc. i have a similar setup with more ram and better gpu and my shit runs fine on low settings. Pent dual core 2.5 6gig ram NV 9500 GT no probs with blizz games you mentioned as long as settings are low, i use 1900-1200 res |

A video card upgrade would be massive. Get yourself a HD 6670 or HD 7750 because they're the highest performing video cards that do not require additional power connection (in the form of a PCI-e 6pin cable) from the power supply. They draw under 75W (the limit that a PCI-e x16 slot can provide) so they're safe to use with your current power supply. These cards will literally perform about 3 times better. Have a look at this performance chart and use the HD 6450 as a proxy for your 7900 GS as they are nearly identical in performance:
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/HD_7750/26.html
6670 is almost 3 times as strong. 7750 roughly 4 times.
Your CPU is still somewhat decent. It sounds like you have an E6400. It's fine for Diablo 3 and the like. Yeah, it will struggle in SC2 late game, so turn down physics and other CPU settings, but it will be fine for most other games. Few games are as CPU-intensive as SC2.
You can also add another 2GB of RAM if you find yourself getting close to the limit. |

Yes, all PCI-express graphics cards work with all motherboards that have a PCI-express x16 slot, be it revision 1.0, 2.0 or 3.0 - they are backward and forward compatible. Earlier revisions have less bandwidth but that's irrelevant for such cards.
As far as RAM goes, get as much as you need, if you need it. You don't have to get any.
If there are already 2 sticks, yes you want to get another two so that the RAM will run in dual channel. I wouldn't recommend buying more than 2GB total unless you have a 64 bit operating system.. but even then, DDR2 is not a worthwhile investment... so either 2x1GB or a single 2GB stick if you only have 1. Manufacturer doesn't matter, but try to get RAM with similar or better speed in order to guarantee that it will run at the same speed as the other stick(s) - they will all operate only as fast as the slowest. Use the program "Speccy" to determine what your RAM settings are currently (EDIT: and when it says something like 400Mhz, you should know that the speed is actually twice that, 800MHz, because ram is double pumped: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_data_rate)
About the video card: get a HD 7750 if you can afford it. Don't worry about the amount of VRAM these cards have, 1GB is plenty. A HD 6670 with 1GB of GDDR5 RAM will be faster than that 6670 with 2GB of DDR3, but 7750 will beat both.Last edit: 2012-07-11 01:05:35 |
